Just an incredible album. I definitely think it plays better as a full album experience, whereas Nevermind is more individually focused. The themes and imagery on this record are just ridiculous. The only downside I have with the album is that they played half a step down in tuning, which sounded great instrumentally, but due to this change Kurt lowered his vocal range which I think was a mistake. Other than that, the entire album is a certified classic and easily cemented their legacy as a top 10 rock band all time, in my opinion.

Fella on the left is saying saying Nirvana is over-rated, but at the same he's also saying Nirvana single handedly killed off arena metal and hair metal and all the bands he liked. How can they be overrated when they had that big of an impact on the music industry by his own admission. It's just a matter of personal taste. Nirvana is properly rated, he just don't like them, and that's perfectly fine. The impact they made is not debatable, whether it was good or bad is the part that is debatable.

Fun video. Nirvana is my favorite band. Guy on the left I disagree with totally most of the time. I think maybe it's time to get over it. This is my favorite Nirvana album I believe. Also, Pearl Jam was waaaaaay more mainstream than Nirvana. Let's be real.

The grunge "genre" is a media creation. There was a side of the Seattle scene that definitely was like a brotherhood and where they liked and supported each others bands. The Temple of the Dog/MLB/PJ/Soundgarden clique was one thing and those guys knew the Alice guys and played gigs together growing up. They were tuned down heavy guitars with a bluesy spin. There was also another separate scene in Seattle that was more punk rock based that included bands like Mudhoney, Tad, The Melvins, Nirvana and those guys. There was obviously some crossover between these two somewhat separate scenes, everyone in Seattle liked and respected Soundgarden.. also Jeff Ament played in Green River for a time which was a pretty punk-centric band. But the point is that whatever "scene" Pearl Jam and Alice in chains were in, Nirvana was not a part of it. What was called the “Seattle” scene was really a group of smaller sub-scenes across the region that weren't necessarily related. Nirvana wasn’t really a “Seattle” band. They formed in Aberdeen, as most people know, but when they decided to move west, they went to Olympia, not Seattle. In fact, Kurt Cobain lived in Los Angeles before he ever had a Seattle address. But for the press, it was always easier to bundle everyone up as part of the “Seattle” scene. Nirvana never interacted or met AIC until years later when they were all already nationally famous and on the radio. A lot of Nirvana's sound has more similarities to Portland Oregon punk bands like the Wipers than it does to bands that are today considered their peers

The idea that Pearl Jam would be considered underground and that Nirvana was "too mainstream" is lunacy lol. Nirvana re-defined what mainstream even was. They broke the mold. Nirvana never changed who they were to go mainstream. Soundgarden was great as well. Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains members were mostly glam rockers that stopped washing their hair and started wearing flannels so they could get famous when it became fashionable to do so. Compare Bleach to Ten and Facelift and it becomes clear who the real underground and subversive band was. Nirvana only made one album that had a slick and polished sound to it, every album AIC and Pearl Jam ever released is produced the way Nevermind is. AIC and Pearl Jam had number one albums, they are the definition of mainstream, they just weren't as successful.

In Utero is so much better… Nevermind is much more commercial, yes… …Nevermind sounds like it was made for a wider range of audience, a great first album - no doubt… …but the lyrics and instrumentals on In Utero are so much more mature…even elegant, perhaps. Maybe it is a generational thing. I’m a later model Xer… I absolutely would not listen to them during the mid ‘90s. I would have rather died than listen to “Radio Rock/Rap” or pop. So funny. My favorite is Unplugged… …the Bowie cover…the Leadbelly cover…sublime!
