The problem is people think they aren't complex. Kurt's sense of melody and harmony was like no other. Listen to the notes he plays and how he compliments them with the notes he sings. Hell, even look at how the chords lead into each other. On top of that, Krist's Bass parts show how complex Nirvana songs can be, and how they weave around each other. Not every Nirvana song is Teen Spirit, which most think.

Kurt barred his ring finger over the 5th and 4th strings in his powerchords, which is why you sometimes hear him catch that 3rd string. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but it gives the chord a suspended 4th sound which I now hear as the "Cobain powerchord"!
@anthonysclafani3963

That "Cobain power chord" was a mistake he sometimes made live, it's not on the recordings. Art of Guitar's a great channel but the "Cobain chord" isn't on the recordings because they edited mistakes out and comp'd takes till they got a flawless master track

Gotta love that Small Clone chorus
(part 2) 20 years ago I plugged my DS-1 straight into a PA because my amp blew up at rehearsal. I was blown away at how good it sounded. I'm sure Kurt plugged his DS-1 into a Mesa Boogie preamp that went straight into the input jacks of the Crown amplifier (they are PA amps) that powered the Marshall Cabinets. It makes perfect sense to me as I've done the same thing with a DS-1 into a mixing console and pretty much the same thing with a DS-1 into a PA. Kurt really was a rebel!

+The Daily Stride Well, he never used a flanger, apart from like, one show in Rio. He used chorus a lot, and used a phaser on only one song that comes to mind, "Curmudgeon", which was a B-Side. The Adaptive Distortion by Boss didn't even exist in 1991, or during Nirvana's time as a band at all. He favoured the Boss DS-1 and DS-2, mostly.

besides all the great riffs, when I listen to the solo I instantly realize what emotions took over me and got me hooked on music and the will to become a guitar player, which I did. I was 11/12 years old when this album came out, and this melody still resurrects all the teenage angst, delinquency, loneliness, and alienation deep down in the heart of a young kid. He used a really really dry distortion. Which gave it that awesome grungy feedback tone. Very great. Full package of creator ivory and talent. Thank you kurt.
kurt cobain didn't use a sans amp during his nevermind days, he used that as his main distortion on the in utero tours. The reason why you can't get the sound is because the guitar part is double tracked. there is also some compression and reverb going on.
I love the guitar in this song

Actually, there is an article that explains how he did it. He used a DS-1, a Small Clone, a Mesa Boogie preamp, A Crown power amp and Marshall Cabinets. I think he got his rhythm crunch from the Mesa Boogie pre-amp and then added the DS-1 for the solo. The reverb and echo was added by the sound engineer.

Always thought this is the best lead he ever did. Rhythm guitar is great too. And this song is a great example of what Krist & Dave brought to the song to make it great. Kurt deserves a lot of credit but the other two didn't get as much as they deserved.
02:58 solooo
Kurt did so good this is most likely how it sounded while he did it by himself
After all these years i did not know, until listening to this, that the very last chord in the verse before the chorus, is different to what is played the first 3 times round
There's 2 different guitar tracks in the chorus, interesting. 1 side is a DS1 and the other sounds like the same setup he used on Lithium, which was a muff into a Bassman. 1 side's def a DS1, maybe the other side is just the overdrive on the Mesa then he hits the DS1 for the solo for more sustain?
i feel on the right side there is more a fuzzy sound and on the left side there is some kind of rectifier sound.
dream clean
(Part 3) Now what even makes more sense is that he was using the Mesa Boogie pre-amp overdrive for his rhythm tone and then added the DS-1 overdrive for the solo!!!! Oh yes! This makes perfect sense, because the solo does sound like two overdrives are being used. Wow, I'm certain that this is exactly how he did it. He did exactly what the article said he did! lol

Is the distortion the DS-1 on this? or the RAT? Sounds more like the DS-1. The RAT is more midrange-y
@OtavioFesoares
9 жыл бұрын
That's the DS-1 through a Fender Twin Reverb, most likely. The RAT was only used on the recording of Territorials Pissings, and Kurt's guitar was plugged directly into the Neve board. Kurt didn't like the RAT that much, and gave his to Krist. Krist would always have it plugged into his amp. Dave in the other hand, loved the RAT. So much so that the only pedal he used for distortion on the Foo Fighters' debut album was a ProCo RAT Turbo. Why am I saying all this? I don't know. Thought this might be a fun read.

fuckin awesome! that's rock! raw and sharp
I don't think so, it's his chorus and some engineering stuff done by Butch that give it that slight phaser sound
I have a 1975, 1977 and a 1978 Big Muff. They are awesome pedals, but the truth is that my two Boss HM-2 pedals sound even better, because they have more tone controls. They are also smaller, more reliable and accept an AC adapter. I use both at the same time. One for rhythm and then kick on the other one for solos. Not too many people know that these old Heavy Metal pedals sound just like vintage Big Muffs.
and they are both well know even today.

Yesterday I read he used a DS-1 into a Mesa Boogie preamp into Crown amplifiers into Marshall cabs. However, I remember years ago I read that Kurt often plugged his distortion box straight into the mixing console. I assumed a Sans Amp has since it has this capability. A DS-1 straight into a console tends to sound horrible, but as I listen to this again.....I think that's exactly what he's doing, and for the solo he cranked the level on the DS-1 and overdrived the console's buss amp as well. cont
0:42 1:57
Hmmm thats very interesting, I never knew that. But look up the bass big muff they too like the boss have an ac adaptor, and are much smaller than the big muff. and it sounds the same as a green russian big muff.
i dont know why put that little sound in the solo kinda sound like kurt screaming
oh, and to have it sound like Nirvana turn up the volume and treble
I have a DS-1 and a DS-2 and there's no way the lead tone is being produced by either one of those boxes. Maybe if he used two boxes at the same time. I have heard Sans Amps too. A Sans Amp can plug straight into a mixing board, and that's exactly what it sounds like Kurt is doing here. Kurt was known to do this, so I'm still sure that Kurt is using a Sans Amp, for the solo at least. I'm pretty sure all the guitar parts are through a Sans Amp directly into the mixing console.
That guitar solo is how every 10 year old wants to play guitar if they had the ability.
go to songsterr and try to play it and remember te keys and practice it the coming days and you can play it. It's not a hard solo in it's easy to play around with because it's goes perfect with the songs melody
