Nirvana Edgewater Hotel Interview 1993

“I really don't care what anyone thinks about my past drug use. I could put the blame on that kind of influence, but it's a mixture of rock 'n' roll in general, the Keith Richards thing, Iggy Pop and all those other people that did drugs. I just thought it was just one of those things that you do, you know, to relieve the pain. But, as I expected, before I started doing heroin, I realised that… I knew at the beginning that it would become just as boring as marijuana does. Like all drugs, after a few months, it's just as boring as breathing air, so… I just don't wanna turn… I've always lied about it, because I never wanted- I didn't want to influence anybody, you know? I didn't want anyone to even consider the thought of doing drugs, because it's really stupid.” - Kurt Cobain

@@matthewjdouglas6471 kinda how it hit me, the first listen I wasn’t too impressed bc I had already heard nevermind and bleach and then, maybe it was just good timing, but my senior year of high school i was just tired of everything and was just down, didn’t even look forward to graduating, I just remember playing the entire album over and over with my head down, and it just spoke to me. After that, every day in my computer class I’d close my eyes and go into a dream-like state and just enjoy the album on repeat. Great memories looking back, but I thought I was in hell at the time lol.

Kurt was talking nonsense. I was 19 when In Utero came out. The singles were MASSIVE and it was a sold out tour. The normies/mainstream may have been lukewarm to it compared to Nevermind, but the album was loved by the alternative audience right from the get go.

It's not that nobody liked it...it just wasn't Nevermind and didn't have the same type of apeal to the masses that helped Nevermind be so widely popular...It still had a fee very popular radio played songs with Heart Shaped Box, All Apologies and to an extent Rape Me all were very popular...but the album as a whole is by far my favorite Nirvana album and I love all of their albums

@@Scotty-P I think his great voice and talent for songwriting made them choose him. It had all been done before but most of it was done in an uncommercial way from bands like Husker Du that were deliberately harsh sounding. Kurts songs were liked by rockers and punks and metal heads yet it could go on the radio and sound ok to pop fans too. He was a super talent. But I think he wanted to be about as big as the Pixies or Soundgarden, not become the top music star in the world.

@@sabbracadabra8367 Horrible screeching does not make for a "great voice". Though there were moments when he showed that he could sing. You're someone else who realises the truth too, and I think that; if he did in fact commit suicide, then it was because he'd had such a major hand in turning the music; and something of the scenes, which he'd loved so much so big.

Nevermind is a great album that’s so unique it has no equal. Its the perfect execution of all their influences into a unique package. The problem with In Utero is they tried to make an album like their heroes and it’s a good album but not as good as the albums it’s trying to imitate. The Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid all released better albums in that style. Steve Albini knew that too.

When your addicted to heroin there's no stopping for appearances... within a couple hours of not using you start getting sick and within a day going without you're in full blown withdrawal. For the last year or so of his use he was just using daily to stay feeling normal...rip kurt

@Edith I have not done any hard drugs, however I can admit I am dependant on weed, and let me tell you, I am a completely different unpleasant person without it. It is almost impossible that Kurt could just be sober when he wanted to be, there is a point of no return where it is no longer your choice, and you need it just to be normal
