Really looking forward to this series! Also, as unique as the original DS's design is, keep in mind that when it was released the GBA SP was out at that point, which had the same sort of stylistic design with the D-Pad and everything. My guess as to why the DS Lite and beyond was so different stylistically was because the Wii was on the way and Nintendo wanted to probably unify their design cues like they did with the original GBA and GameCube, or GBC and N64, etc.

The SP d-pad did have a low profile like the original DS probably because of the folding design. The one on the SP seems smoother to me though. Thank you for leaving the comment! Glad you're looking forward to the series!

Glad to see that this series has been brought back :-) I was eight years old when this launched and my mom took me to Toys R Us to get upon its release! The only DS systems I never owned were the DSi XL, 2DS, and 2DS XL. The DSi line in general seemed kind of lackluster to me, but I remember when it was announced my friends and I in middle school couldn't contain our excitement. I look forward to the rest of this series, Bob! Thanks for being one of 2020's saving graces.

The AC adapter is also shared with the GBA SP. The DS Lite is the only one to use his own adapter. The DSi, DSi XL, 3DS familly used all the same adapter.

Nice work! This is just my opinion but i loved the first years of the DS: Mario 64 ds, Yoshi Touch and go, Wario ware touched, Metroid prime hunters, Kirby paintbrush, mario kart ds, sonic rush, rayman ds,... These first titles showed that nintendo was innovating while keeping their old IPs alive, but then the ds lite and wii era came and they started going for more casual games like brain age or nintendogs... Anyway i think the original DS is too big nowadays but it also reminds of the gamecube era with the diferent and weird style

I Argee!.

I just bought on brand new, factory sealed DS Lite from ebay that just came in the mail today. Same colour as the one you got. I already had a New 2DS XL, but I wanted the gameboy advance support so I could play GBA games as well as I never had a GBA.

I still can't believe that's what the original ds looked like I had the ds lite as a kid and so did every other kid at the time

Funny that a similar thing happened with the Wii U! The Wii U was a huge failure but the 3DS was doing very well!

i remember getting the original ds in grey and my brother a ds lite still in grey so many memory !!

The safety net made sense anyway but the GBA was only their latest handheld for 3 years when the DS came out and it wouldn’t make sense to discontinue it after 4-5 years.

Is it just me who prefers the original DS over the Lite? For me it feels a ton more comfortable and the buttons are SO DAMN GREAT TO PRESS! Best buttons on a Nintendo system bar none.

22:00 The DSi and DSiXL have power buttons as well, instead of a slider.

There is one thing that I think keeps both of the DS and DS Lite from being perfect and that is not being backwards compatible with ALL Game Boy, Color and Advance games.

I really regret trading in my original blue DS to get $80 off my DSi. I wish I still had it...

The original DS actually used the same adapter as the GBA SP. The only two truly unique adapters were for the original GBA, if you bought the separate rechargeable battery pack, also the DS Lite had a unique adapter. Everything from the DSi onward to the New Nintendo 2DS XL, possibly even the Wii U pad, has the same adapter.

Ah yes my first nintendo system i still have my Ds i today

I never had the original DS so it still looks weird. I had a Lite and a DSi and now 3ds besides my Switch

I followed the same path- kinda. Lite (lost) then DSi (sold) then 3DS (sold) then 2DS (sold) then Switch then finally a New 3DS XL

Can u imagine how big it would have been if the did the GBA was available where u could play snes games 100% handheld. I've been playing super mario world rn and can't help think "this is exactly what I wanted as a kid" instead I went with game gear. I was all about taking ur games with u.

DS Lite is the best model ever.

If they make a catalog dedicated to Nintendo DS games on Nintendo Switch Online, what games would you want them to put at launch?

Can’t believe Nintendo stopped making next gen ds’s all just because of the switch. I’d say both the DS and switch are equal at being the best handhelds because I like the DS since it has 2 screens instead of just 1, and I like the switch because it can play console games in handheld mode. Nintendo still needs to make more next gen ds’s along with more next gen switches! We also need back Pictochat for the next gen ds’s too! PLEASE Nintendo! PLEASE care about your fan’s ideas!

The og ds may have been bulky, but it felt very comfortable to me.

Do you plan to do a "Nintendo Unboxed" video on the GameCube and Wii?

Probably for the Gamecube but not for the Wii (mainly because it's too difficult to box back up!). I do have an unboxing video of the red Japanese 25th Anniversary of Super Mario Wii if you want to check that out.

As a kid, everyone in my family had a DS system. Most had the DS lite, some had the DSi, but I never did. I only had a Wii. I eventually got a 3DS and loved it!

Leo was 14 years old in October 2020.

The grey ds lite is my favorite .. I recently broke my childhood ds lite trying to fix the hinge :(

I honestly prefer the original more than the Lite. Just has more spunk.

The ds is the goat has many good games

The DS Lite is the only DS to have a power slider. DSi and XL also have buttons.

Hello I have a Nintendo DS and I had 6 of the 14 Nintendo DS family and when I was little I've destroyed every DS I got my hands on so I was completely out of control back then I still have my 3DS XL but the top screen is broken I just wanted to play it again without the broken screen that way I still have it but I can't

Fun fact: the charger for the original ds is the same charger for the game boy advance

Same charger for the gameboy advance sp specifically. The only other system to use that charger.

January 23,2022 Good morning I didn't own the Original DS I bought the Ds Lite in 2007 Along with Pokemon Diamond and pearl.. I still Have the games but the ds lite broke a few years back I didn't get another DS until 2011 DSI XL.

I wish I could have that but I don't have the money to get it

I used to steal my brothers original DS to play Pokémon Diamond and hide it under my pillow

Wich one is better for playing GBA cartridges original DS or DS lite? I have a GBA SP but I want a back up console with better ergonomics for playing my GBA cartridges.

Yes, the screen on the Lite was MUCH improved over the original and one of its main selling points.

I also wish I had an HD camera when I made those. Unfortunately, a remake is not something I'm interested in doing. Just think of the video quality as being similar to playing games on those consoles. 😉
