Nintendo's been continuing to adhere to the "lateral thinking" design philosophy that Gunpei Yokoi applied to the GameBoy and it's still working out well for them over 35 years later. It shouldn't matter if your hardware isn't the best as long as the battery life is acceptable, the platform is affordable, and the software is of good quality.

In the 90’s I remember advertisements for Game Gear and Lynx focusing on how much better the graphics were than Game Boy. Nintendo didn’t care and 30+ years later they’re still dominating with the least powerful hardware.

Maybe, but at some point, the games start looking dated and on screen enemies number around 6, 7 tops depending the level and available overheard. All in all, modern games aren't about being flashy, but what you can do to engage the user via particle effects and many enemies. We didn't get that with the latest metroid, just bare bones gameplay at its max.

@@acardenasjr1340 aside from games that are specifically built with huge numbers of enemies like the Warriors games or zombie games, 6-7 enemies seems pretty standard for modern games on any consoles. More enemies is not always equal to a better game. For most games, there comes a point when the huge number of enemies just become background noise instead of engaging you. Besides, how many enemies do you expect to face at the same time in a Metroid game? Do you expect it to be like COD zombies?

One of the reasons why Switch has lasted so long is that we are in an era of gaming when indie games and a bit more graphically intense games are no longer really trouble for even mobile hardware. Great graphics aren't anymore about textures and polygons but post-processing effects. To port more intense games to Switch you don't need as much work as for example porting a PS4 game to Nintendo 3DS.

I am loving my OLED Switch. I don't know about anyone else but this economy has beat me up left, right and center. I am a father, and a husband and buying games is not the only thing I have to spend my money on. I appreciate the fact that with Nintendo I do not have to buy a new console every other year just to play their latest and greatest. Not only does Nintendo just focus on making fun games, when first party Nintendo games go on sale it is a big deal. The games are just polished experiences. On top of that Nintendo has been having some incredible e-shop sales with their 3rd party developers. I have no shortage of games to play on the Switch for the foreseeable future and the system is just a hit with my family. I have felt no need to buy an Xbox Series S or X or a PS4 or PS5 or even buy a new PC. The "new" ray tracing, 4K games on those systems just do no appeal to me. To me, this current generation of consoles is a wash and it is not because the hardware is not incredible but the games are not fun or I feel they are catering to a different audience. It like cars. What is the use of paying more money for a 400+ HP car if you can't use that power on the street and have no time to logistically use it on a track. That extra HP just becomes a waste of money. Between the Switch, my Steam Deck, my Analogue Pocket and my retro game systems I am set with gaming. Actually I am more excited for new Sega Genesis releases than anything on the PS5 or Xbox Series system. There is also the fact I have to work for a living so I cannot spend all my waking hours playing games but when I do have time, I have a great time. Nintendo just gets it this gaming generation and I do not mind spending my money to buy their games if it means it will continue to support the incredible talent at Nintendo.

It feels like the 9th generation has barely started and there's hardly any actual exclusives available on PS5 or XBX. Meanwhile, the famously "underpowered" Switch has had a steady stream of games with what feels like a new first-party game every month.

That dude has made native N64 hardware run and look almost like a 6th gen console just by optimizing the hell out of the rendering pipeline. After being introduced to the concept of the Switch and playng it for the last 7 years; I cannot go back to any other way of playing. Yeah it's the weakest harware this gen; but if the next one can perform like a PS4 Pro; I will be very happy for another 7 or more years. I love that I feel like I OWN what games I buy on the Switch. Yes; even the digital games (which one can argue about the ownership of those); the fact that I can play all my games COMPLETELY OFFLINE and if I were to go into airplane mode for the next 10 years; I know that if I don't earse my SD card; I will still be able to play those games. The very concept of the Switch, completely rides on your ablity to take your games and play them ANYWHERE without any limitations.

@@sneakingelephant Microsoft specifically wants to go all cloud streaming and subscription based; because for them that is the best way to combat piracy. They don't want to give anyone the chance to own anything; because they think we are all potential pirates and if everything is streaming from a server; the only way to access the game is to commit the bigger crime of hacking their servers. Look up the Angry Joe and Major Nelson interview here on youtube; where they litterly say that cloud gaming is their ultimate goal. It was before the launc of the Xbox One; where they initially were going to have it be an ALL DRM console, where you had to log in and check in online; before playing ANY GAME OFFLINE at any time. They later removed this requirment; because they had huge backlash and cancelled pre-orders of the system; but they still didn't give up their goal. Everything you seeing that is happening now; is them getting closer to that goal. They don't care about selling games or consoles, for this reason and Sony aint to far behind. Nintendo may have their issues; but at least the commited to tradition selling of games and giving us some snese of ownership. I rather they be draconian in the way the go after roms and hacking methods; than for them to be like Microsoft but if people keep pushing; it might happen.

Great video, guys. The fact that Nintendo is so successful with the Switch has to do with many factors. One of them is what former NOA COO said before the launch: “We’ve learned from our mistakes” (Reggie Fils-Aimé). Other reasons are the great marketing, the hybrid concept, the consistent output of Nintendo games (in-house, 2nd party), the price of the hardware, the fact they have made commercials with celebrities (remember DS? Exactly!), and also the president of Nintendo world wide. After the passing of Iwata, Kimishima took over for a short term and finally Furukawa was the one who has to lead Nintendo at the start of the Switch into the future. He already told investors to maximize sales and profits and also expanding their business operations with Nintendo IP. And look what happened. In the past 7 years of Switch being on the market, Nintendo made more profit than all other previous console generations (including handhelds) combined! I knew it would be successful when it was fully unveiled back then. But I never imagined it would be this successful. The sales projection for the hardware was 125 million (told by Nintendo executives in 2017). They’re far beyond that number. It’s astonishing. I wonder if Nintendo can do this trick again with the successor.

My though is that the most valuable thing about Switch is, Nintendo design it to be a toy, not a "game console". You are supposed to have fun, not to debate on how to have fun. And like, Nintendo published games aren't even the biggest value on the Switch. Having something that can play my favorite games wherever and however I want to just feels good. And I actually had most fun playing smaller indie titles on Switch even though they likely run better on Steam. And Nintendo published games? There's the two game coupon that makes their games relatively cheap. Like, sure it usually doesn't go much cheaper than that, but if I'm actually interested in a game I wouldn't want to wait for a sale anyway.

Thirty years have passed since I've had any interest in core Nintendo games. Nintendo was late to the party with N64 and PS snatched up the aging audience. If they made their graphics without the need to render facial hair and focus on appealing art styles, the cut scenes wouldn't need the level of fidelity they go for now. Nintendo has traditionally been very set in terms of their prices. However, I do agree that Nintendo does things right; especially with the perceived value of their games. It's definitely impressive what Nintendo has managed to do with the limited hardware. It just shows how well optimized Nintendo games are. I think it would be nice if PlayStation and Xbox games were more optimized and more fun rather than pushing for raw hardware specs to make things as photorealistic. Nintendo IPs are unique in that regard and I think that's why I've been really considering to get a Switch these days even though honestly I want a PS5 a little bit more. The big things that is holding me back is the whole consumer regret that I might feel if the PS5 Pro and or Switch 2 comes out and I bought a PS5 Slim and or a Switch OLED.

I think the cross-gen nature of the current gen consoles help make the Switch's argument for it. Not every game has a AAA budget or pushes artistic or technological boundaries, nor do we expect them to. As we've discovered, a lot of people still are on PS4/XB1, and those customers still have a lot of great games coming out for them. In the same way, if Switch games look "good enough", with the added benefit of being portable, that's still a win in many instances. I think of how excited a lot of people are about the Marvel vs. Capcom collection. These are 30 year old games, but they're beloved games, and now we have the chance to take them on-the-go? I'm quite positive that will be a hit on Switch. I think both Microsoft (Doom, Minecraft) and Sony (Lego Horizon) see the same thing.

  • @johnclark926

I feel like Nintendo could, in theory, support the Switch indefinitely without the need of a successor. By all technical standards it’s outdated, its controllers are unusually susceptible to wearing out, but it’s hard to deny that it’s capable of doing just about everything anyone could care about. Outside of framerate (and the Pikmin series), I can’t really see how Nintendo’s games could take advantage of newer hardware to aid the game’s design. It’s an issue with technology on a broad scale that almost everything is capable of doing anything, and we’re seeing diminishing incentives for upgrading hardware. The “demanding” titles that you’d want a beefy PC or console for are often just poorly optimized games that will run bad regardless of how strong your platform is, and the well optimized games that will use your hardware to your fullest will also run well on affordable hardware. I can see some major technology advancements on the horizon, but I can’t see why anyone would give a crap about them unless they’re dirt cheap.

I value gameplay more than graphics. Although, you still have to present a great product for people to actually buy, and feel that gameplay. Nintendo games are just stellar when it comes to the feel of a game that is hard to put into words. Most people who have played and enjoyed a Nintendo game, know exactly what I'm talking about. It's the people who will never try it because it looks bad to them are missing out. I'm just started replaying Metroid Dread a few days ago, I am enjoying just as much as the day I bought it. Granted, it's been a bit since Metroid Dread was released, and my memory is frankly terrible, but I'm am still shocked at just how good this game is. It is the best platformer I have ever played, it's running at 60fps, and looks gorgeous on that OLED display. Kudos on Nintendo for the incredible job they provide. My only criticism with Nintendo, are the remasters that they continue to make, that I personally hate. I am not a fan of remasters, unless the game is ancient. Bringing back a decade old game doesn't impress me, especially if I have played it. Remasters are great for those who have never played a those classics, which I guess you could say it is who they are targeting. I'm just not a fan of any remasters, regardless of platform. For example, every year people keep hoping and praying to see Sony release a Bloodborne Remaster, when in my opinion, people should be asking for a Bloodborne 2. There is nothing wrong with Bloodborne as it is. Sure, it would be nice to play Bloodborne at 240fps, but wouldn't you rather see the next chapter of that game? If Nintendo sat you down at a table, told you that you get to pick 1 out of 2 games sitting in front of you, with Bloodborne Remster on the left and Bloodborne 2 on the right, who also mentions privately that you are the first and only person who knows that these two games exists, and then you get to pick. Without question, you are going to pick Bloodborne 2 over Bloodborne Remaster. Do not tell me you wouldn't pick Bloodborne 2, because there is not way anyone could walk away from a brand new Bloodborne experience. Look, I get that Bloodborne is a masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just feel like when more people request for a remaster, the less likely a company would budget on a sequel. Then again, we are talking about Sony here, who have more than enough money to develop both a Bloodborne Remaster alongside a Bloodborne 2. And who knows... Maybe Sony, is in fact, producing both games at the same time. Now I'm starting imagine just how incredible it would be, if Sony launched both a Bloodborne Remaster and a brand new Bloodborne 2 together. Oh my god. Wouldn't that be something special? The sales numbers would be astronomical. What's funny is that Sony knows this right? Sony knows how just how special Bloodborne means, to millions of people, and I wouldn't be surprised if this scenario actually happens. It's a slam dunk strategy. Experiencing both games back to back. Anyways, back on topic, instead of fantasizing here, so I'll just end it with this. Requesting remasters freaks me out, because I want to ensure that budgeting goes directly towards a new experience, and not possibly holding back a game, that we now have to wait even longer for. Do you see what I mean? Or, am I crazy? There will be a Bloodborne 2. There is no doubt about it. It is not even a question. Bloodborne 2 is going to happen, and I feel like no one cares. So, lets hype it up. That's all I got. I go on these tangents all the time, so I apologize for going off topic.🤣Nintendo rocks, Cheers! 🍻

Nah I totally get about Nintendo never doing strong discounts on their games... After all I'll never forget I felt scammed buying NFS 2015, even though it was 80% off. I hated the baby difficulty on the cops.

The Switch has a secret, it is quite heavily underclocked to preserve battery life.

It’s probably aging well because they care about quality of just fun games instead of being all about graphics and power, the core audience is everyone especially families who typically just wanna have a fun game night every now and then without caring about how much power the console has

I still love my switch so yeah, personally I feel like it’s aged pretty well. There are some notable titles that stuggle quite a bit but I either avoid them or didn’t find it game breaking

The longer time goes on, the more Nintendo will be proven right about the race to the top of powerful consoles. Everything will plateau eventually, and developers will only have so many resources to make games look and perform better. They’ll always be like 5 years behind or whatever, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s really not that much time.

Nintendo's non-reduction of prices makes gamers prioritize which games they buy and when they buy them. As a result, gamers that want to buy specific games will not buy them all at once but instead will buy them slowly over time, spreading consumption and giving Nintendo a stable flow of income. The fact that games are high quality helps a lot, because that way gamers will continue to remember them and think of them after several months, until they eventually buy the game.

You're looking for the logic in the pricing of their games? It's resale value. Nintendo knows most of their audience collect their stuff which is a better investment in the long run. They're mostly not a depreciating asset in your library of games specially if you keep them in very good condition.

What People underestimated is both Nintendo’s sheer power to make good games, and also how Nintendo eshop was out-dated compare to competitors. Remember region code? and mandatory membership card? I was once bought dlc for mario golf for my 2ds, and i immediately realize that the dlc only can be play on one device, not my other devices. Even though we appreciated eshop theme and other charming stuff, the eshop before switch era is more than out-dated. The steamfication of nintendo eshop in switch era really make a big difference for worldwide gamers. Unlike 3ds era, i’m now more regularly buying switch games.

It clearly hits walls every now and then (Bayonetta 3 felt like it would have been much, much better on PS5). But overall, I'm truly impressed that my launch Switch still works perfectly fine and runs good games. Pikmin 4 was surprisingly gorgeous given the ancient internals. I'm so ready to let it die and buy a Switch 2 but Nintendo apparently isn't 😒
