I personally believe that the amount of games we got last year would have roughly been the same regardless of the pandemic. There'd probably be a few more trailers for some games and maybe fewer delays, but for the most part everything would have been the same.

I would guess maybe one big new first party title that didn't release...? The 3D All-Stars collection was clearly supposed to come out in March, and I would argue Age of Calamity and 3D World would probably have been September and October/November. Would there have been one more bit title in November/December? Maybe not, but maybe so. The year was definitely light on completely NEW games, I wouldn't be surprised if one more unannounced one is finishing up now and was supposed to come out late last year

Even MM has been vindicated by history in the eyes of the fanbase, while games like Twilight Princess that didn't do a lot that was new have retroactively been soured somewhat (with general consensus seeming to be that it was good, but perhaps not as good as it could've been if it had focused more on being its own game instead of being an Ocarina of Time 2).

2020 has been a pretty "game of thrones season 8" year for everyone tbh.

YES! I absolutely ADORE the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series (especially Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS) and was SO happy this series wasn't going to be abandoned like a certain OTHER Pokemon spinnoff (*COUGH Pokepark COUGH*). It really didn't help that It got what I like to call "The Pikmin Treatment" where It released way too close to a much more anticipated game (Animal Crossing New Horizons in Mystery Dungeon's case and Smash Bros. Melee in Pikmin 1's case). It also fixed many of the issues I had when I played Blue Rescue Team. Now to hope for either an Explorers of Sky remake or a new entry entirely. I honestly can't decide which one I'd want more.

The biggest surprise for me this year was how much I loved Xenoblade Definitive Edition. I never played a game in the series, and after finishing the remaster, I went on to play Xenoblade 2 which I loved even more! I just started my playthrough of Xenoblade X last night and I’m very excited to dive into another experience by Monolithsoft.

Pikmin 3 deluxe is the highest selling Pikmin game now so that’s something

I can understand the argument for them not doing more directs, but they benefitted the smaller titles a whole lot more than they did now. In the past, people would be paying attention to the smaller and indie games in directs as they were live and had to watch them to see if something big followed, where as in the partner showcases, people just skip forward until something catches their eye, drop a dislike and move on. THE reason games like Untitled Goose Game and Busgax were so popular was because of their sandwiching between this huge announcements, but I couldn't name one indie title from any of the smaller showcases that were just dropped on KZread And with Twitter releasing the yearly review of gaming news, out of the top 5 most tweeted about events, Nintendo didn't even make the list. Not one of their events or announcements generated the level of hype that the Tokyo Game show, or Xbox and PS' independent directs did I think these next few years are going to see a lot of success for Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo have created this perfect format, and have just given it up like that, leaving the market for live, console specific events without it's biggest competitor

22:05 i'd say Xenoblade DE still did pretty well considering it was the second best selling title in the series, and this is including the original version and the 3DS version

I love how Arlo says that it is disappointing that Xenoblade wasn't selling well when he himself said that he wasn't interested in the games.

What do you mean Xenoblade isn’t selling well? Considering how niche of a game it is, it has sold pretty well. XC2 has now sold over 2 million units and XC:DE is the fastest selling Xenoblade game as its already over 1.5 million. Just because it’s not as high as other franchises doesn’t mean it’s selling badly

I also remember reading that XCDE is the best selling version of XC, which is a notable achievement. Arlo makes it sound like the game was a flop, but personally would not consider breaking a million sales to be bad.

Incidentally, just like with the last three Paper Mario games, Kensuke Tanabe was the producer of Chibi-Robo Zip Lash. He had pretty much no prior involvement with the series and was suddenly involved with the new game, he ordered that it be a departure from the previous titles, and it backfired. Similar story with Metroid Prime: Federation Force. They really need to stop making him producer of installments in series he wasn't originally involved with.

Yes Arlo, computers are rare in Japanese households. Last time I was there people were shocked by my gigantic gaming laptop. Not just because of its size either, but because "You own a computer!?"

It's saddening that everyone forgets about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

Xenoblade DE was absolutely the game I needed last year. I already really liked it's original Wii release but stuck fairly strictly to just the main campaign. I got myself the Special Edition and just completely tore through it, nearly 100% it, end game super bosses and all. I just had this new found love and appreciation for this game that I already thought I couldn't love anymore than I already did.

Me: expecting comments about how well Nintendo did this year Comments: *Hat*

Take a shot every time Arlo uses a video to take a dig at Origami King.

I love that even though Tokyo Mirage Sessions is such a forgotten game that it doesn't even get a mention for being the forgotten game that started off the year.

I like to think that Arlo offscreen is like Danny Devito in Matilda. He forces all of his kids to play Pikmin instead of read books. One of his kids snapped and glued his xmas hat to his head like in Matilda and now he's just stuck like that now

It really does hit you that normally delays are bad for games but for Animal Crossing it was probably THE single best thing they could have done.

Not to be a downer, but it kinda still felt like Animal Crossing was released too soon. Sometimes I wonder if they play tested it at all, especially the abysmal coop experience. Then again, it’s been a year and they haven’t added a single QoL change people have asked for so I guess they’re satisfied with what they released.

22:07 Xenoblade has always been a niche game & even niche in the JRPG genre. XC Wii sold $900 thousand in sales. XC2 as of now sold over $2 million & is the best selling Xeno game. XCDE has almost doubled the sales of it's Wii version. So the series is doing very well in the scope of where it's bar is set. Compared to Mario yeah that's nothing but for a niche game & compared to it's original sales then it's very succesful.

Xenoblade is continuing to do better and better though. 2 has cracked the 2 million mark and DE has sold over 1.5 million. That's way higher than 1 or X ever got and I think the momentum will continue. But JRPGs just aren't going to sell 10 million plus very easily. I think a long term aim of 5 million for a Xenoblade release is more realistic and would be a big milestone.

My truck blew a cylinder and I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, so thanks for keeping me not bored man.

Hearing you mention Xenoblade X at all just makes me want a sequel or remaster or a port or ANYTHING on the switch *so much more* , it was a masterpiece of a game that was so unfairly held back by its console. And this part doesn’t matter haha but it’s my absolute favorite game and I want people who weren’t able to play it on the Wii U to experience this amazing story and world

The uk has actually been advertising pikmin more now saying things like "Looking for something to play after animal crossing new horizons? Try Pikmin 3 deluxe!" It's amazing to see the game being advertised

About who's in the legal right in the Melee tournament situation, there's a very simple answer: "Innocent until proven guilty". If Nintendo is accusing the tournament or any of its participants of piracy, strictly speaking, it's Nintendo's job to provide hard evidence for their claims. But as you said, that doesn't really apply if one side has an army of lawyers and the other side doesn't.

I think you're really underselling Xenoblade's performance on Switch. 2 sold 2 million units and had a very successful DLC, and 1 looks to be doing around 1.5 million. I agree that these seem a bit low given the scale of these games, but at the end of the day these are fairly niche JRPG experiences, so I don't think Nintendo is ever expecting them to do blockbuster numbers. My interpretation is that as long as Monolith keeps helping on all of their internal projects and consistently leave their name on Nintendo's best performing titles (BotW, Smash, Animal Crossing), they'll give them money to keep making Xenoblade games, even if they'll never sell 10 million copies. I agree with you on that. Outside of pokemon, the other RPGs Nintendo has doesn't always perform this well. Fire Emblem for example was around for over 30 years before it finally had a game break 1 million units. Other RPGs like Golden Sun started off strong and then just declined after the first game. Then there's the case with Earthbound where it completely flopped in the west when it first came over. Xenoblade still has yet to establish itself but honestly, the series is on the same track as Final Fantasy when it first started. If they play their cards right Xenoblade may have a game that blows up like the Witcher 3 or Persona 5!

The Eti-cons have long since even cleared up, but to elaborate further; he was indeed donating the proceeds though this information was not shared with his family which caused a rift between the community. Later the hatchet was buried, the Etik-cons may be put back up with the classic E logo instead if Etika's family gives the go a head.

It is also worth noting that the Cease And Desist they got from Nintendo wasn't just for the Etik-cons but for multiple Pokemon/Nintendo IP using ones so it was part of a mass shutdown of ones that did indeed make a profit for them.

Oh my god you guys have to play Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I’m playing through XCDE now and there is very little the two games have in common, other than a few item names. I find 2 to be a better game in terms of combat and setting so yeah uh play Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

it's so sad seeing everyone ignore Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, sure it's a remake but it brought back a series that was thought long-dead, and to me and many others, it was our animal crossing equivalent

Nintendo is the only company in the world that can sell ROMs for £50 and get away with it.

In all honesty ... Nintendo's 2020 sucked for me. I didn't buy a single Nintendo game in the whole year, just because nothing of interest for me got released. I just hope 2021 is gonna be a lot better
