Chatter saying "turn based is lazy" is why the game industry tries to sell us garbage and think they can get away with it. Gamers don't know anything about game development. And they don't need to, it just makes it easier to sell them things like Anthem (despite that it never really looked like a full game imo). The SaGa game is only 50$.... but yeah, keep complain about the industry while crapping on games made by people who care about their franchise.

Turn based isn't lazy, they're lazy if they lack the imagination or thinking abstractly about turn based combat. It's like saying strategy games that aren't real time are lazy. If anything, action games has been around WAY longer than turn-based video games, especially when you factor in Tennis for Two on old radar equipment back in the 50s and 60s. Sure, action games have evolved somewhat, but they've evolved around the same rate, arguably peaking at around Final Fantasy X's battle system.

turn based is a very popular genre in Japan, and it's not going to go away no matter what people outside of Japan say. DQ and saga are both very popular in Japan, and the games introduced here are remakes, sequels, etc., and the previous games are just turn based series. JRPGs continue to be in demand because there is a demand for them, and don't you forget that they are a Japanese company? If you want something else, there are plenty of non-Japanese companies.

Saga was the first game to sell a million copies on Square, but it hasn't sold well at all in the modern era. Japan is often thought of as a country that loves RPGs, but this is not true. Japan is a country of action games, as evidenced by the fact that most action games other than FPS originated in Japan. (i don't consider games that originated on the PC, such as Diablo, because they are completely different from console action games with controllers.) Until the 1990s, when Japan dominated the video game market, 80% of the world's video games were made in Japan, but how many were RPGs? The popularity of RPGs in Japan peaked around the time of the Super Nintendo and PS1, when action game makers like Capcom, Taito, Sega, Konami, and Hudson followed in the footsteps of Square & Enix and started making JRPGs. Nintendo also started making Mario RPGs. Today, ff's popularity has plummeted and only DQ remains a JRPG. To be precise, DQ is the only JRPG that Japanese buy. Other IPs are niche. Persona may have sold well there, but it's like Konami's "Tokimeki Memorial" with JRPG elements. And Final Fantasy went from a JRPG to a Capcom`s DMC clone.

For better or worse, Nintendo does what Nintendo wants to do. Unlike Sony or Microsoft, Nintendo has always operated as a sort of cross between an art school and a toy company. They often defy what makes sense in terms of conventional wisdom and market research, and instead often takes the path less traveled. They don't try and chase the next big thing like their contemporaries, rather, they do what they think is fun and unique. They're a company run, not solely by corporate suits, but by visionaries, artists who want to create what they want to create, not what focus groups or whinny internet fans what them to create. This upsets gamers, journalists, and shareholders who want them to be a serious competitor to Sony and Microsoft, perhaps even wanting them to be an exact clone. But this sort of stubborn, sticking to their guns mentality of Nintendo, while has it's flaws, is perhaps the company's greatest strength. It shows they're not just some soulless corporate entity, and are rather willing to defy conventional business wisdom just to offer consumers something different. I'd be lying if I said I don't get frustrated by Nintendo's business practices on occasion. They have their share of annoying, anti-consumer practices just like all companies do. But Nintendo isn't your run of the mill gaming corporation. They're equal parts brilliant and baffling, and they're as smartly forward-thinking as they are stubbornly ass-backwards. They can be either greedy or generous depending on the situation. This is why people asking them to go third party don't realize how catastrophic that would be for the industry, because love them or hate them, there really isn't a company quite like Nintendo.

Not really, everyone is fine them doing their own thing, people simply just don't care, because their success can only exist in a controlled ecosystem where no other competition may exist. If they could stop butt foxing their own customers and fans for 5 seconds, that would also help. Beyond that, all Nintendo games just have the image of kiddie games, for which you have to be either under 12 or over 50 to enjoy.

The problem is that you got people who come in and try to sabotage these genres and gameplay styles because they personally don't like it. I've seen the same thing happen with survival horror where fixed camera and tank controls are being thrown away and forgotten because a bunch of modern gamers despise it. It's why games like resident evil will likely never go back to that style, even for a smaller budget title, because not only do these people not want to play it, they don't even want it to exist in any capacity. They also try to shut down and shame anybody who does like that style and would like another one released. It's extremely toxic and narcissistic behavior

If a game had really fun systems where u play it as many roguelikes and can swap out abilities and upgrades to fit a situation, it is always appealing as long as it doesnt over complicate the game

@@ambi4903 Elden Ring is an action RPG, therefore classifies as an action game. Anything that requires constant action through input from players is considered an action game. Turn based games typically only require action from the player, from a set of commands or when their turn in the game is designated through specific conditions the designers and programmers set (ex. ATB, traditional turn based, Conditional Turn-Based, etc). Another thing, Emerald Beyond just released three months ago, and is a brand new game developed from the ground up; SaGa fans demanded a new game and are buying it to show Square Enix there is a market for SaGa, even today, and they want remakes or new entries in the franchise, that's been dormant for years or even decades. SaGa fans prefer stylized graphics over realistic or over detailed ones, because that's what they're accustomed to, and is realistic if they want a quick turnaround for new games in the franchise, while not ballooning their budget and resources to overaccommodate for their development costs and prioritize what their fans and creators want.

Your attacks will do 1 damage if you just tell the brothers to do it. You have to execute unique inputs to deal the expected amount of damage. All attacks from enemies are avoidable and most are also counterable for a bit of damage. The overworld is full of Mario platforming and unique interactions between the brothers. One of them even had Bowser as the main playable character with his minions interacting with him for special attacks.

Mario and Luigi games do turn based right. You take turns attacking but you actually have to dodge or block enemy attacks, and the timings can get really hard. Bowser's inside story was my favourite game as a kid and I don't think I ever beat Bowser X lol.

On face value turn based seems to always be samey until you actually get into the mechanics of the game, but until a person actually plays it for themself you wouldn't really see whats unique about it compared to other turn based I wonder what turn based games Asmongold played

I understand why Asmon feels that way for turn-based games but couldn't you say the same thing about any type of gameplay? In action combat games you move around, dodge, parry, do normal/heavy attack, or use abilities. In fps/tps, you run around and shoot guns, throw grenades, or use abilities. In survival games, you gather materials, craft items or build. Any genre of gameplay is inherently formulaic.

Like the "farming sim direct" a few years back, this year's "rpg direct" reception depends on if you like rpgs (especially turn based) or not. And since I like these, this direct was amazing. The Mario and Luigi franchise being alive despite the dev team closing down is huge! And for those that never played one, the Mario rpgs are turn based, but each have their own spin on timed presses during combat. The Mario and Luigi series does the most with this, IMO. Despite being turn based, you're always doing something in combat. That, along with the Marvel vs Capcom announcement made this my favorite direct. MAHVEL LIVES!!!

Going into a new dungeon and getting your ass kicked, then grinding for a while, maybe buy a new sword, and go back and destroy them ... until you get to the boss and start to sweat cuz you're almost out of MP. I hope Asmon checks out DQIII, it's a really exceptional JRPG

Just look at the people complaining about others being dismissive at Turn-Based RPGs, like, brotha, I like TB RPGs as much as the next guy, yet you don't see me being offended that others doesn't like what I like.
