Ninja 500 (EX 500) Carb Rebuild

This is not a how to video, its just me working on my motorcycle and making a video. Two things that I enjoy doing.
If you are going to rebuild your carbs and are new to it, I suggest you buy a manual.

    Such a lovely video, love your camera work. I followed your video to a T and got my '93 running nicely again. Lots of rust in the gas and carbs. There's a startup/rev video on my channel if you're interested. Really appreciate it!

    Great video. I have a question. My buddy has the same bike with the same carb on it. I cleaned up all the jets and got it running decent. However the carb leaks tons of fluid out of the larger port on the intake/airbox side of the carb. I looked at the needle and seat and it didn’t look to be in terrible condition. I guess my question(s) are: do you know if you can replace the seat, or is there some other way it could get out that port? Again, I even held the needle shut and it seemed to block the fuel from overflowing, but and soon as I put the carb back together and fill it, fuel pours out that port.

    I would replace the needle, clean the seat with a q-tip as they are not replaceable to my knowledge, and then check the float level.

    I appreciate that. I ended up selling that sportster and picked up a 91. The 88 was a 4 speed and 91 was the first year of the 5 speed. I am currently developing some parts to hopefully put into production for sportsters so I havent been making videos. I'll get around to an update at some point.

    @@jamesellis6331 I went back 2.5. Each turn was a 1/2 turn of the screw. That is a mixture screw. You bottom it out and then turn it back out. 2.5 turns is generally a good place to start and then fine tune once it's running.

    Hey 👋 just bought a 2003 GPZ 500S. It does start but it cant hold up the RPM and it dies. I managed to drive it but it would loose power and die if I didnt hold up the gas all the time. Could this be the problem? Do I have to clean the carburetor and buy the repair kit? Or what could be the problem? 😐

    Isn't it easier to remove the throttle cable bracket instead of undoing the nuts? I mean, wouldn't that affect cable "calibration". I am curious as to how to go about this, since I need to remove my carbs to send them for cleaning. No start....even with starter fluid.

  • @wolfscrape

    @wolfscrape

    2 жыл бұрын

    People do things differently but I find this to be the easiest way. Setting the cable tension is fairly simple. If it's not starting with starter fluid the carbs are probably not your problem.

    @@randyidk867 if all the slack is taken out out the cables and they are adjusted properly and it's still not returning, something is in a bind. Take the cables back off and make sure they move freely unhooked. Also check and make sure the carbs themselves move freely. There isn't much to go wrong but I have had cables get stuck when putting it back together.

    Clear tube usually goes on top of the airbox, you should see a little dip in the top of the box where it sits and then I think it goes down into the battery box if I remember correctly. I would go look but I'm currently working 2000 miles away from mine. Yes, to the petcock.

    What carb cleaner do you use?

  • @wolfscrape

    @wolfscrape

    2 жыл бұрын

    Usually just a store brand. If the carbs are really dirty, I’ll completely disassemble and soak in a gallon can of parts cleaner for a few minutes. That’s not usually necessary for a running bike though. Usually only for one that’s been sitting for a long time with gas left in it.
