He doesn't like the song itself too..........................he said he was having all kinds of.....................well, drug problems and was struggling with major depression (he's said "I had no idea which way was up around this time") so most likely that's the main reason. I personally LOVE both the song and video! Rivals anything on The Downward Spiral.

Yeah from 3:05 onwards is beautiful. Its almost like a slow but satisfying release of stress and tension after a frantic or stressful period knowing you survived, but with a pinch of melancholy thrown in but not in a bad way. Like laying on a comfy bed in a darkened room after feeling absolutely spent or knackered. That's about the best way I can describe that sensation.

People don't ever seem to remember that Trent learned piano from his grandmother as a small child and it has been remarked about him having an "ordinary middle-class childhood"; however, he was considered an introvert. Then worked as an assistant recording engineer and janitor at Right Track Records in Cleveland, OH which is where he taught himself everything about recording, during the studio's down time, as the owner decided to let him work on his own demo's for free. He has earned a BS Degree in Computer Engineering from the distinctive Allegheny College and has a registered IQ score of 170, which is the same score as Einstein. During the making of "The Downward Spiral" album, he rented the Sharon Tate House near Los Angeles, where six people had been murdered by members of The Manson Family in 1969. Reznor lived in what essentially is the master bedroom, where he isolated himself away in the closet, which he converted into a sound recording booth, with a new Apple laptop computer, loaded with some excellent sound engineering software, where he created everything himself, except for the drums. While living in the Tate Murder House he befriended a tall skinny kid, who idolized Reznor and took the residence's reputation as part his stage name ― Marilyn Manson. They remain friends. He's the consummate perfectionist, who refuses to be dictated too; nor, will he ever compromise his vision. One recording studio found out, as he so infamously mailed them a letter from himself, who had cut his own contract into shreds. Another studio was undercut by Reznor, who had notoriously released his own music for free, so his fan's could copy and redistribute his work, just because he refused to give into studio management's demands regarding his "violent content and liberal use of profanity". Reznor has been a longtime proponent of self-creating, self-orchestrating, self-composing, self-promoting, as well as self-producing your own music, which gave way to the DIY production revolution, now seen on a multitude of online platforms ― So now, you can be your own maverick, due to his many talents. Reznor wrote this single for the David Lynch film "Lost Highway", which is the reason why he indulged the video's director Mark Romanek, who accurately depicted the Macabre Edwardian Era aesthetic, based on two distinct Gothic-Horror writers. So, whenever people say Trent Reznor is a music genius ― It's all very, very true ......!!!! * Side Note: If you require further analysis, as well as an intellectual challenge, then analyze the video's three distinct themes and references by looking into director Mark Romanek. The video's director took inspiration from two distinct American author's: Edward Gorey (1925-2000) who authored ‘‘The Hapless Child’’ (1961) and his abecedarian books ‘‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’’ (1963) and ‘‘The Chinese Obelisks: Fourth Alphabet’’ (1970). The central figure of Gothic-Horror literature is Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who's works employ the death of a beautiful woman as a main plot, such as ‘‘Annabel Lee’’ (1849), ‘‘The Raven’’ (1845), ‘‘Berenice’’ (1835), ‘‘Ligeia’’ (1838), ‘‘Morella’’ (1835) and, ‘‘The Fall of the House of Usher’’(1839), but also as the heavy absinthe drinker Edgar Allen Poe was alleged to be, but also ‘‘The Imp of the Perverse’’ (1845) and ‘‘The Tell-Tale Heart’’ (1843) are in comparison to the music video.

Marilyn Manson and his band recorded their first demo tape under the name "Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids" in 1989. Trent Reznor didn't rent the Sharon Tate house until 1992, so the "residence's reputation" had no influence on Marilyn Manson's stage name. More importantly, Reznor and Manson have NOT remained friends. In 2009 Reznor said of Manson, “He is a malicious guy and will step on anybody’s face to succeed and cross any line of decency." Once again, Reznor released a public statement in 2021 denouncing his former friend. He said, “I have been vocal over the years about my dislike of Manson as a person and cut ties with him nearly 25 years ago." However, I agree with you that Trent Reznor is an uncompromising artist and most definitely a musical genius.

The most obvious reference to Gorey is the boy sitting on a cushion in front of a painting. Other references include an unidentified painting resembling Gustav Klimt's The Kiss (1907-1908) and a "Scanning Machine" designed by Frenchman François Willème in 1860.

Remember being in high school in 1994 when The Downward Spiral came out. Listened to it on infinite repeat on my CD player. 3 years later this amazing song came out. After the Downward Spiral, this was the only new NIN song for the next 5 years, which back then felt like an eternity for new material by Trent. I payed extra cash for the Rusty Nails bootleg compilations and interview CDs with Trent just to hear something new, but the Perfect Drug was still the only “new” original material I had from 1994 until The Fragile came out in 1999. I wore out The Lost Highway Soundtrack-Track 3, playing it over and over. In September 2018 I got to see him play this great song live for the first time ever at Red Rocks. Thanks for this one song Trent that kept me going during that long stretch as a teenager between albums.

A thumbs up just isn’t enough sometimes. This is perfection. Every single frame is like a master’s painting. Mark Romanek directed this video, he also did the remarkable Closer video and the beautiful movie One Hour Photo with Robin Williams. The Perfect Drug video budget was some insane figure in excess of $800,000. The rooftop set, the ‘freezer room’ set and the large hand sculpture all ate large portions of the budget. But sometimes large budgets are given to the right people who create greatness. For the video Romanek was inspired by the artists Edward Gorey and Gustav Klimt. The large painting somewhat resembles ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt. The video’s narrative (presumably) follows a grieving man’s descent into madness haunted by a child’s specter. Together with vampiric themes and the Absinthe trip reminiscent of Francis Coppola’s Dracula which was still strong in peoples consciousness at the time. I was around sixteen when this was released. It struck a strong chord for me. I couldn’t believe the beauty and power of the song/video combination. Still feel the same all these years later. Today I’m thankful to have been growing up when this timeless piece was new. Every so often I come back and re-watch this video. Always look forward to the scene at the end with Trent gazing mournfully out the window with a greyhound resting on his knee and the child figure looming above. Accompanied by the song’s gorgeous outro. That image is so strong for me. I know Trent wasn’t thrilled about having a video with a bloated budget, and I think he had a certain disdain for the song at that time too. But I hope he can look back now and see/hear this with a fresh perspective. I can’t believe anyone could see/hear this and not appreciate its beauty. Big kudos to all involved!
