He also didn't give a shit about Lenny fucking Kravitz, like HE is an original pioneer when she was speaking to 2 of the greatest pioneers in music history, although Trent hadn't even come close to peaking yet, but still... you going to bring up Lenny Kravitz in the 90's to David Bowie and expect him to be impressed? Bitch please was the look Bowie gives her throughout the interview. He exposed her for being a big ol phony alternative fraud in this.

LOL I had totally noticed the comparison to Crystal Japan when Downward Spiral came out, it's great to hear how that came about. Story was better than I expected. So often I recorded stuff that I was really satisfied with, only to discover later that I was unintentionally ripping off Gary Numan or Sisters of Mercy or someone...

He does have a sense of humour, it's just dense. That's how he is and he's just a nice genuine guy who has gone on to be very versatile and creative with his music like a more modern day David Bowie. Bowie appreciates his talent, don't be a snob.

"its blatantly obvious he wanted to be NIN" No. Just no. In the 90s Bowie was very much into "Industrial Rock". But he cooperated with NIN not because he wanted to "be them", but because Trent Reznor was the most accomplished and proficient artist in that particular genre. "Outside" was made before that involvement, and "Earthling" (on which Reznor had a role) was, stylistically, *very* different to anything NIN had ever done (except maybe "The Perfect Drug).

They had a great respect for one another, each influencing and evolving the other's music during this era, as well as occasionally creating it together. It resulted in some of Bowie's best, most under-appreciated music in my opinion. And, well, Trent's spoken plenty about Bowie's influence on him, including in this clip - A Warm Place is sublime and it's basically a Bowie song.

This is so awkard it's painful. But Bowie demonstrating how every star should treat interviewers when they start getting ridiculous and trivial is always worth a watch. I wish there'd be more of that attitude in the business. It's not being disrespectful for no reason or teasing her, more like "oh please do your homework so I CAN respect you". But today, it's all standard questions about girlfriends and crazed fans, and no one talks about music any more, and they are all kissing each other's butt.

It's not that awkward. You're just from the generation that thinks everything is "awkward". It's called being real...the opposite of FAKE. Which is what 100% of so called "artists" are now. Back in the day, we called these people posers....today every single performer is a poser.

If we talk about music an musical influences, Bowie has always been like that - he's taken things from other musicians and other art forms that he liked, and made something of his own out of it all. In this case the music that Bowie liked at that moment was what NIN was playing, so there was an influence of that in his music.

That would be Lisa Kennedy Montgomery - "Kennedy" for short. She hosted the MTV series Alternative Nation during the 1990s. Kennedy was a very controversial host who did not hesitate to say or do things that were... I suppose, "out of bounds" might be the correct term? She was known for being Christian and a virgin, but that didn't help to distance herself from an overall raunchy image. She's since looked back on her time at MTV thinking, "WTF was I thinking back then?"

Probably there was some exploiting going on, but not quite as much as you think. But I know quite well that Bowie could be like that, although he is my all time favourite musician. Bowie "exploited" NIN by going on tour with them in order to better present his own new project. Reznor invited him, though, not the other way round.

He was always willing to explain his music, his career, his approaches. This woman really did lower the bar and he did pretty well not to diss her.

In my opinion, those two don't have to earn your respect anymore, as they've already done enough (in Bowie's case, more than enough) to earn anybody's respect. If you think that anyone of them (I guess, you mean't Bowie) hasn't earned your respect with all that they've done so far, then you'll never have respect for them. But it's just a matter of your personal taste, not a matter of - if they have earned that respect.
