Nina Perlove - flute articulation/double tonguing part 1

Музыка

Introduction to double tonguing. Practice with and without your flute. Remember to play with a good sound even while articulating fast. Use a metronome for EVEN articulation. Try to equalize the tongue (T or K) and throat (K or G) strokes. Play the exercise with:
2/4 TTT-KKK-TKTKT-KTKTK
4/4 TTTTTTT-KKKKKKK-TKTKTKTKTKTKT-KTKTKTKTKTKTK.
Post your video responses and be sure to watch the rest of my articulation videos

Very helpful!! I can single tongue very very fast (I played the fast part of the Faure Fantasie with single tonguing) so learning double tonguing was something I always happily avoided.. however, now that I'm entering my second year B.Mus I've learned I can't get away with not doing it anymore haha. This has been an excellent excessive for me.. thanks bunches!! (:

I would suggest: Play the passage slurred first. Then play it articulated using the same air quantity or even less, but the air SPEED must remain fast enough to get the upper register notes to speak. Try it and let me know.

Watch video #3 about keeping the air moving between notes, say tee-kee tee-kee with a LONG vowel sound. Play slurred first then just add a SMALL tongue. I'll also be uploading a video soon about avoiding a "marching band " staccato. Good luck.

Hello Nina, I often use the "on the lip"/"spitting rice" articulation for getting a clear beginning to notes in the 3rd octave. Can this technique be expanded and used as the basic single tonguing stroke for both legato and detache playing? Can it also be used in multiple tonguing i.e. lip-guh" or "lip-guh-lip"?

To incorporate double tonguing and triple tonguing in the high register, does one use more air? I noticed, when I played, that its harder to double tongue in the high register and also at a softer dynamic like (p)and (pp).

Nina, i was wondering if you know the "Thick as a Brick" piece and could help me with a question. In Part 2, from 6:25 to 7:10, the flute part, is that double tonguing or some kind of effect? I'm just kinda curious, that sound way too fast for double tonguing, but who knows! ps: i don't even have a flute yet but i'm going to buy one asap! :).

Hello Dr. Perlove, I have a concern about practicing double tonguing slowly, in the Trevor Wye books, he states that practicing slowly "... has little value..." "slow practice is akin to learning to run slowly or jump in the air in slow motion; not much use!" (Trevor Wye, Book 2, Articulation) What would be the most appropriate way of practicing double tonguing???
