Simon Estes is surpassingly great. His "Penta che il popolo..." moved me to tears, so beautifully did he pour his gorgeous sound out.

Simon Estes, Leontyne Price and Fiorenza Cossotto are three reasons for Verdi to be proud.

This was such a great and powerful performance from Price and Estes...

I saw Leontyne Price many times as Aida at the Met - mainly the old Met! To me, she will always BE Aida! In fact - little known piece of trivia. My mother and I had ticket for the last performance of Aida at the old Met (April 1966) . Birgit Nilsson was supposed to sing Aida that night. Ossie Hawkins came out prior to the start of the performance ... which meant someone big was not going to perform. After announcing that Mme. Nilsson was indisposed, he stated that Mme Price would sing the role of Aida. THE AUDIENCE WENT WILD!!! It was a magical performance! I remember it still!!

No argument is needed... Price is AIDA, not just the best, She is AIDA... Yes she may sound a bit off here but considering this was her swansong and that she had given it all earlier that evening to produce the best O Patria Mia ever recorded or sung in history, this is still monumental...

I disagree with that notion. THEE Aida for sometime was considered Tebaldi (Callas is my personal choice for Aida). Price was no more an Aida than she was a Leonora. Hers was better suited for the high-laying parts of Strauss and Mozart (i.e. Arabella, Donna Anna and the Countess.) She was not fit for the heavier Verdi soprano roles.

There are many Leonoras who sounded better than Price in it -- Gencer, Callas, Cerquetti, Arroyo, etc.; and there were better Aidas such as Milanov, Dimitrova, Callas, Milo, Marton and recently, Saioa Hernandez. Price was suited for Mozart and Strauss: nothing more, nothing less. She scooped her way through the vocal lines of Verdi and butchered them to sustain her limited voice. There's nothing referential about her singing in Verdi.

I really wish the sound quality was better!!

shells500tutubo she sounds great she was 57 years old and she owned Aida through her entire career a very difficult Opera to sing well. Leontyne price was Aida end of story don't you be messin with leontyne sucker fish! And I'm not even black! Nevermind my DNA said 5% African from Sudan. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. According to the internet all caucasians have black blood and then they just don't know it! This Little Light of Mine I'm going to let it shine Let It Shine Let It Shine help me Jesus let it shine. A little bit of respect, these were her farewell performances. She was no longer in a prime, it was just a wonderful opportunity for fans to see this great Diva for a last time. Fans really do not care if the voice is no longer what it has been. They attend out of love, respect, enjoyment and still her fabulous singing.

I have always been impressed by Simon Estes. Fabulous voice and great actor. Price has never, ever impressed me. Her voice has a dusky dound that defeats the music. Estes has plenty of squillo for both.

His Italian is wildly unidiomatic. He cannot make a proper 'oo' sound. And Leontyne. Nice C in the aria preceding, but otherwise close to unlistenable. She sang better in concerts later.

Whooping and swooping is generally not thought of as part of bel canto technique. Nor is a middle voice as full of holes as Swiss cheese. Despite the great nostalgia of the evening Cossotto came close to stealing the show. To those ignorant of vocal art the cognoscenti are often mistaken for trolls.

@@AfroPoli the same thing regarding? Coates is entitled to a opinion, but these purists are usually not engaged in or employed by ANY Opera House. He or she hasn't been on any relevant stage anywhere, yet are so puffed up with artsy farts of criticism.

@@geraldtyus8645 The same thing regarding the unidiomatic singing and the "oo" problem. But that's an opinion not everybody needs to share. As to the rest, I don't agree that the critic needs to be a successful opera singer. Do you need to be a gourmet chef in order to judge the food you eat?

simon estes is brilliant in this duet. price on the other hand sounds awful here. shrieking, slurring, crooning. not good.

It was definitely time for her to hand up her full stage opera chops, but "O patria mia" will NEVER again be sung as it was that evening.

wrong, leontyne's voice is better here than it ever was, age was never a thing for her. she is singing her last aida, she is not leaving any stones unturned, the shrieks and shouts and screams are her mannerism, its just how she sings especially when she being extra dramatic
