I'm a bit bummed that the Z7-II is not getting the love of some of the new AF features that we were promised with the dual Exspeed6 processors which added capacity for more over its predecessor, but I totally love this camera. I was considering a Z8, but perhaps this is all I really need. It also scratches the itch for the classic Ux.

@@patrickstonetree1 Hold on now, I dispute that. The ZF will probably last much longer under more load than any DCT. The TC multiplies torque and allows wear free starts while towing and it doesn’t have the complication of multiple complex synchro units being robotically changed in the background in anticipation of either an up or downshift, always prone to some wear on the mechanism. I have both a Hyundai/Kia 8 speed wet DCT and a Ford 10 speed [and an older six speed ZF licensed Ford] currently and I know which I’d trust best long term and it has a torque convertor. Convertors are good, just ask any photographer.

I didn’t think I would want a full frame classic Nikon. I did have the Zfc as my weekend camera for a time and loved it. I then realised I cannot afford to have three mirrorless cameras so I got rid of the Zfc and kept my two Z6ii … but since I love the Zfc as a nice good looking camera I didn’t want to part from it so far. So my daughter got it as a present. :) she still lives in our house so it is not far away. … and then Nikon announced this. A similar good looking camera that is as good a weekend camera as the Zfc (I mean better) but also better camera for 99% of all I do with my Z6ii cameras!!! I hate it when manufacturers do this!!! No medication helps me fight my G A S gear acquisition syndrome… so … I think one of my Z6ii must leave my house soon!!!

I know I want it for the advanced spec's - I could see this as being very good for the running race I shoot every September .. After having shot with the OG Z6, Z50 and Z fc over the past few years. I have been wondering why Nikon didn't develop the Zf first - but good things come to those who wait. I think I will keep my Z6 as a backup, and the Z50 is usually my go-to wildlife camera, as it pairs really well with the FTZ adapter and 200-500 f/5.6 which is my rig. The Z FC however - not sure where it fits in after getting a Zf - if I will sell it or keep it. We'll have to see.

I started out with a Canon T6s. 4 years ago I moved from Canon to Nikon. One of the reasons was because of Canon's use of the cripple hammer. After the z9 came out the z8 came out. It has a few things that the z9 doesn't have. They're not major features. Some of which I wouldn't use. Now we have the zf and it has features that neither the z8 or z9 have. I'm sure they'll get them eventually since it's mostly a software update. I don't know if Nikon did anything different with the sensor in the zf to give it better IBIS or to allow for the stabilization not being in the center. I heard the sensor isn't locked when the camera is off so that might be something that the z8 and z9 won't get. I won't be getting the zf but this does excite me to see what comes out in the z6 III and z7 III. I'll probably save up for the z8 because I don't like screen blackout in burst mode. I don't see the z6 III or z7 III having a stacked sensor. I'll be shocked if they do.

Everything about the camera looks great but where are the matching retro Z-mount lenses? We only have the 28mm and 40mm SE, and whatever Voigtlander can bring to the table. Adapting F mount lenses sounds great on paper but adding the FTZ adapter is clunky and goes against the aesthetic that the camera is striving for.

I am thrilled about this camera. Mine arrives tomorrow. I may be in the minority but I am glad to have 24mp with the better autofocus of z8/9. This is going to be a low light beast. I know there is some controversy about the auto ISO. I think it is overblown but hope they make the dial setting take precedence which should be fixable with firmware. Now I am hoping voitlander releases a z mount 28mm to go with the 40 I have.

Methinks the micro SD card is brilliant. Modern laptops have no card slot at all. Even newer laptops geared towards photographers might have only a micro SD card slot with SD card slots becoming rare. So a micro SD card directly written in camera is good. I might even like to have a synchronize later option in camera. So that at the end of the day I can have a true backup even if speeds are different.

100% Zf but I'm biased, I used Df for 10 years maybe (found it at 400 shutter at a really really discounted price). FX sensor will beat Dx sensors for low light, assuming you have same speed lenses and assuming that you have enough depth of field. Now I use Z7II which is a different beast with really high megapixels and in the era of AI tools, I believe a higher megapixel count will usually win with the best lenses even in low light. Another really big thing with Zf is the improved image stabilization which will make a big difference in handheld shots. So to conclude: super low light, astro etc: FX for sure. Low light handheld: if low shutter speeds ok for your subject, best body stabilization wins this game but FX shadows again will be cleaner. You control light: Go for big megapixels if you can afford it. The Zf is like a bargain at this price point with its hardware.

Also a lot more things to consider here. How much are you invested in Fuji lenses? I was invested heavily in Nikon FX lenses so thought it was a brainer for me but now I use autofocus adapter and almost solely use E-mount lenses adapted (with perfectly fine af for my needs) unless I'm using a Nikon tele lens or AIS lenses for fun/specific look. Sony system has the better lenses for the enthusiast and a lot more choices. I like Nikon bodies regardless whether Zf/Df or modern style but Sony are very capable tools also with better lens selection (I lose weather sealing when I use with adapter and also one more point of contact that can fail. The things we do for love (of our Systems))

What I don’t get is why linking the rotational VR axis to the AF point is better? Like, why are you more likely to induce rotation around your subject? Shouldn’t the camera compensate for wherever the axis happens to be? Also, the micro SD slot is UHS-1, so there is a capability difference.

  • @ClearComplexity

One thing I never understood, people say they love the physical dials, fair enough, so do I, but then like 95% or more of people just throw it into aperture priority with auto iso (or even P, I've noticed a lot more people using P these days with how good the cameras are getting and how a lot allow P with adjustments) meaning the only dial they really would need/use is the exposure comp dial. With my Fuji cameras I had I would find myself going to a shutter speed on the dial, then fine tweaking it with a command dial nearly every shot...which was annoying, so I just set it to a command dial and basically never used the dial for shutter speed. A second dial was fine for exposure comp, honestly when it comes to physical dials, I get the most use out of an aperture control, but even then I could just have it on a dial. I was debating on this or a G9 II, but I think I'll just go with the G9 II once enough people have shaken it down real world. Z isn't really that expensive, relatively speaking, if I were to jump to Z for FF, but Nikon kind of burned me when they confirmed they got my ~1.5K USD of trade-in gear (minimum) and then just ghosted me never giving me any credit back on the purchase it was linked to or in general. They made a 1200 dollar transaction cost me 2500+ USD, which thankfully my bank just did a refund after I explained to them what had happened. I just about broke even after selling what I bought off them (Z5 open box + 40mm f2). I've got a whole collection of MFT lenses I love, so the G9 II makes more sense at the end of the day. Maybe by the time I see G9 II's discounted or used for a fair price, the mythical Pen F II or maybe even a GX8 Mark II will be announced. Until then my E-M1.III, E-M5.II, and E-P7 will carry me.

The physical controls would make sense if the camera didn't give direct feedback through the EVF and/or back LCD (and live histogram), and we'd take light readings from a standalone light meter. As it is, however, going back and forth between the dials and live feedback is just more time-consuming and doesn't contribute in the least to the final outcome.

If all it has is an old-style mechanical remote shutter release that means it will be tough to use the Zf for astrophotography, despite its likely good low-light performance, as it won’t work with an external intervalometer, time lapse controllers or any external camera control software that uses a remote shutter port. That would be taking a step backward for the sake of retro design.

I am surprised Nikon chose to put all of these new features in the Zf. I would have thought they would have released a Z6iii first. This is kind of a Sony move where they release a less expensive niche camera with features their popular models don't have. What are Z6ii owners going to do now, buy a Zf or wait for the Z6iii somewhere down the road? I am buying a Zf for my back up/travel camera, but it is replacing my D750, so kind of a no-brainer for me. Goodbye to crappy autofocus at last.

This goes back to their strategy during the old battles against Canon around 2010. They didn't really hold features back to fit their release schemes or product hierarchy. If they could shove in a feature from a higher end product without costs snowballing, they'd often do it. Meanwhile, Canon were deleting sync pins from their hotshoes.

  • @Cervin_Suisse

The better autofocus was absolutely necessary indeed. What price level will the Z6iii be then ? 3000.- ? If so it means that for those who want the specs of the Zf but don't care for for the vintage casing it will be harsh.

Well, the main problem for us in photography is that the Nikon Zf is a retro camera with about 24Mp. Nothing wrong with that, but here in Norway it's just $ 100 cheaper than a brand new Fuji GFX 50S with a kit lens. Yes, both with kit lenses. At the end what do you prefer, a 135 sensor or a medium format sensor and a kit lens for the same price. I think the Nikon Zf is $ 1000 to expensive.

Kind of depends where your priorities lie. For example how many Z mount lenses will Nikon and 3rd parties make, vs how many GF lenses there will ever be? How affordable are the lenses you would want? And if you're buying used lenses, which system is going to offer the best value and availability? On B&H, looks like the cheapest GF lens is $1000 and most are a lot more. B&H has 34 GF lenses. And 206 Z mount, 74 of them Nikkor. And the ZF styled primes are 'only' $306.

@@Ruylopez778 If I have one autofocus GF lens, I'm happy with either the kit lenses 35-70 or the 50/3.5. Prefer the last one. Otherwise, I have many T&S, but also Shift lenses that cover the GFX sensor and so on, but also many telephoto lenses. Has the legendary Nikkor 105/2.5 AIS which gives just as beautiful images with GFX as it has always done with Nikon cameras and which many others cover the sensor completely. My lenses either Nikkor or Zuiko work fine with my m43 cameras, as it also does with the Canon 5D MkII and GFX. It is my thinking that everything should be usable with whatever system I have with me. GFX and m43 systems are the perfect combo, last even with Speedbooster. I have no need for Autofocus, but fine with one that is weather sealed. My cameras are always in manual mode. Finally, you must remember that these are only tools to achieve what you want, images. Whether it is digital, analogue, m43, 135, MF or LF format.
