Nikon Z8: Banks B-D Action, Landscape & Astro Setup Guide

Ойын-сауық

(LINKS BELOW): This is the second and much shorter of my two Z8 setup videos. In it I’ll showcase how I tweak the camera’s settings established in the first video as Bank A to customize banks B-D for erratic action, landscape and astro shoots. Along the way, I’ll detail how to use Recall Shooting Functions Hold to establish a hybrid autofocus mode that I find great for complex action shoots.

I am 74; this is likely my last camera. My relationship with my D610 has been a bit casual, learning just enough to barely get by. I am treating the Z8 seriously; it deserves it. I have already gotten photos I could not have managed with my D610. And it looks like I will be able to do birds in flight now; rarely was successful with BIF before. Thank you!

    Hi Henry, thanks for taking the time to make these videos, it helps a lot. I've watched the series several times to get my head around some points as well as to tweak how my settings and try things out to optimize how I interact with the camera. Right now one of my main issues is the idea behind the banks versus custom user settings from the z6/7 series in combination with the z8/9 "Extended menu banks" function. Leaving it "on" means changes to the individual menu banks are stored. For example, in Bird mode I change my shutter speed from the preset 1/1600 to 1/500 to capture a perched bird in low light, then switch to my Landscape bank - my shutter speed in Bird mode will now be 1/500 when I use it the next time, which to me is sub-optimal. The alternative is to turn the function to off, but as far as I can tell, whatever the shutter speed and aperture of the mode/bank you are in are applied to ALL you user mode/bank settings. Using the same example above, I am in my Bird settings, turn "Extended menu banks" to "off". Now when I switch to my Landscape mode, my shutter speed and aperture will be 1/1600 & f2.8 by default instead of the 1/200 & f8 I currently have as my Landscape base settings. Am I misunderstanding the philosophy behind Nikon's approach or is there another way to make the base shutter speed and aperture in the respective banks "sticky"? For the life of me, I cannot imagine a scenario where having baselines that continuously move is the preferred working method of anyone - it contradicts the definition of the word baseline, among other things as well as leaves the door wide open for mistakes made in the heat of the moment to be a repeat occurrence. Thanks in advance if you are able to provide me with some insight - I cannot believe I am the only person moving up from a z6/7 to a z8/9 who struggles with this. Cheers!

    I have a whole video you should look for on how the banks work. If you applyl extended settings, the exposure settings are included with banks (ie shutter speed & aperture). without it ignores them and treats those globally. nothing in the banks is "saved" ever. They are bookmarks that remember where you last were in them. There is no set point beyond the Save and Load settings option. That's all explained in that video. You have to 1) set your camera up how you like in all four banks, 2) save your settings, 3) load your settings again after making shoot specific changes. If you format the card you lose the saved settings on it. So remember, Load settings, format, save settings. Every time...

    @cjgetreal

    Rob, for sure "my menu" is faster than the deep dive menus. Since the imenu is customized for each bank individually you really don't need most of the standard imenu settings for astro I find that white balance in K, AF-S, pin pnt, Red and monitor/view finder brightness seems to be the only things one would be changing. Good luck with your new Nikon set up. Pick up a 20mm F1.8 for your astro needs - won't regret that lens @@R.Hogarth

However I just found out after 6 years of shooting with it that my D850 has custom banks as well😅. When I check that the settings are, in fact, on the SD card, nothing shows up in the Z8 folder on my computer. Am I not waiting long enough for it to copy it to my SD card? My camera almost instantly tells me it has copied them. Or perhaps my SD card which is only 32 GB is too small & needs more GBs? Z8 and D850 are the exact same resolution, so if you're doing astro (ex. milky way or deep sky astro) and able to duplicate the setup, you can combine the images to double exposure time. That's a case I plan to use for my usage :)

    There is no way. Sadly you have to adjust the release mode every time you switch. It's a flaw. The only way around it is the Recall Shooting functions Hold I use in the Bank A settings for quick action surprises. It's a really dumb thing that they don't put the drive mode in the Shooting bank where it will be stored.

Nikon support told me it would have to be sent to a service center. I mailed it, at my expense. After a week, I got an estimate for repair. Almost $ 300.00. This camera was just over one year old, purchased directly from Nikon and had less than 1,000 actuations. The camera worked perfectly until I tried to upload the firmware. Sure would like you to detail and explain the intervalometer on the Z 8 as it would/could be used for Milky Way images. I’m still confused what the interval is - is it the time between image captures or the whole set of time of each exposure+number of exposures+time between exposures+time to write each exposure to the card? I understand that 15 seconds is actually 16 and 30 is really 32. In this crazy world that almost makes sense! Thanks Hudson for sharing your knowledge and insight.

    Yep intervalometers area the same simple devices they have been for decades. It trips the shutter every so often on the schedule you set for the number of frames you set. Forget and leave LE noise reduction on and miss every other frame. Be sure to leave long enough to reset and be ready to fire. Usualy an extra second is fine, just test it.

    @@HudsonHenryPhoto That's all I've been doing for the last couple hours. I'm fighting it. I watched as you set 240x1 with an interval of 2 seconds. I don't want to take 240 images so I've set it at 5 x 1 with a 2 second interval. But do I still set exposure time using the dial as normal? If I want a five second exposure and ten of total frames what would my settings be? It was so much easier with my D810 and aftermarket wireless intervalometer! LOL! Thanks for your help...

    @@easy56wedge 10x1 is one set of ten frames. 6 second interval. Set your exposure manually with a 5s shutter. It's not at all different from the old wired intervalometers or the internal intervalometers from the D700 on... There are added controls and options, but the settings really haven't changed much from the dslr intervalometers.

    Hi Hudson, I'm still trying to get my back function buttons assigned now that I've been shooting a bit with the camera. Here is my question: is it possible to program Recall shooting functions (hold) on 2 different buttons with different settings? I'm wondering if my camera is defective as it won't hold both sets of settings. For example: for FN-1 - Recall Shooting Functions (hold) - Shutter speed 1/3200, Aperture f/6.3, AF area mode -Dynamic small, AF Subject detection- animal, Focus tracking with lock on AF, Release mode 10. I then check my camera, use the button, and the setting is working. Next I attempt to set the Video button using Recall Shooting functions (hold), - Shutter speed 1/4000, Aperture f/7.1, AF area mode -Wide -L, AF subject detection- animal, Focus tracking with lock on, release mode 20. I check the camera, the setting works. Then I hit the FN1 button to recheck that button and the settings have changed to the settings programmed to the video button. Any advice or insight is appreciated. Thanks!

    @10¨30 Assigning Fn1 to point focus ONLY puts it into point focus mode as long as you hold Fn1. On release it goes back to 3D mode. Also, when in Bank B, it does not constantly autofocus - pressing back button focus immediately sets it to point focus. so shouldnt Fn1 be left at 3D tracking?

    You're using "recall shooting function" try "recall shooting function hold" as I recommend instead. No, 3D looks for subjects and this method disables that. In some scenarios the subject detection fails and gives false results and you want a manually directed point affirmative instead.

    Great instructional video. Question. I can not store the number of shots I want for each of the banks. For instance if I set 10 fps for the standard bank and then 20fps in the action bank, the standard method automatically becomes 20 fps. If I then reset the standard bank to shoot at 10 fps, the action bank will be reset to 10 fps. In other words, all banks will be reseted to the latest rate of fps I will pick. Am I doing anything wrong? I have tried saving each bank after setting them up, all together and the same happens. The last fps picked will become standard for all the banks. Again, what am I doing wrong? Again thanks for the video. Gilberto.

    RE: Z8. Why is it that memory of the AF-S and AF-C functions can be lost when going into the i-menu button? This is frustratingly happening to me despite being careful to always save my settings when adjusting SHOOT or CUSTOM settings for the bank menu. At 10:39 you seem to refer to having the same issue with I-menu button. Being able to have the various menu banks correctly open to AF-S or AF-C is critical for this to work.

  • @HudsonHenryPhoto

    That's only the case if you are using recall shooting function hold. That's a temporary override of the actual settings. Hit the programmed button and it instantly switches whatever parameters your choose (which can include framerate, AF, exposure and more) until you either push the button again or enter the menu structure (including the I-menu) at which point it returns to the actual camera settings prior to activating recall shooting function hold. Entering the I-menu alone has zero influence on chosen AF settings except as it might deactivate recall shooting function hold as I learned filming this video at your marked reference point.

    Photobanks don’t seem to preserve release mode. If you have 20fps in Action it seems to carry it over all other banks. Or if you have it set to Single shot, that gets carried over Action etc..I guess it’s just what it is.

I'm starting to learn and get into it but I struggle a bit with the shooting banks, I have set shooting menu bank A and custom setting banks A to work together as standard that I use for daily use. B is set for action, but when I change between the two the release mode doesn't change, for example if I'm in my action bank it's set on 20 frames and when I change to A ( my standard bank) it's still set on 20 frames but it should be set on single frame. Anyone might know what I'm doing wrong?

    It's so important to understand the why of these customizations. I've had people show up to workshops who've downloaded someone else's settings for Sony, Canon and Nikons without understanding them. They get lost and so do we as instructors since the camera doesn't respond as stock and we don't know the reasoning and thought behind the customizations. We just do a factory reset in that case. The worst disservice I could do to the community would be to offer to load my settings into your camera without explaining why I made each choice, thereby leaving it for you to decide if that makes sense for your own style of shooting. I'll never do that.

    Thanks for your video(s), very helpful. I disagree with your auto-iso setting (for action). One of the big benefits of these system camera's is that you "see what you get" while taking photo's and if you change your shutterspeed, you see it straightaway. With auto iso you loose control of your light and thus your look and feel of your photo.

  • @DarrenLloydPDX

    Maybe it's because I already shot manual mode with auto ISO with my DSLRs and trained myself to find the right settings, but I have had no issue with the hundreds of thousands of frames of soccer and motorsports I've put through my Z6 and Z9. Your subjects may differ, however!

  • @HudsonHenryPhoto

    @HudsonHenryPhoto

    That's certainly not true in my experience at all. You see the effects of iso as well. Auto Iso is a godsend in complicated light handheld. Keep your eye on it and use shutter and aperture choices to keep it in bounds. You most certainly still see the effects of exposure with auto iso active just as well as without, but with it your exposures in complex situations remain precise.

    @@DarrenLloydPDX Hi, do you use it or not? Both your subjects are fast moving but mostly also in good light i think. I could understand using auto iso in complicated light situations.
