Nikon Z6ii Astro Timelapse Beast

Today I'd like to take a comprehensive look at how the brilliant Nikon Z6ii handles astro timelapse. This camera is an astro timelapse beast. I've been amazed at the built in features of this camera relating to shooting timelapse, and in particular how the auto features enable very smooth day to night sequences.
I'll be continuing this theme in a later video where I'll be looking at how I couple the camera with an assortment of motion timelapse gear.
I'm always keen to read your comments below.

Wow Richard, the generosity with which you share information is a credit to you and has massively contributed to shortening the learning curve of astrophotographers such as myself. This video is certainly no exception. In summary, as a Z6 owner would you agree the only features I'm missing compared to the Mk II are 1) 4k video mode, 2) ability to plug in external power supply. Many thanks.

Thanks so much for your support Greg. Well the original Z6 does have the ability to record a 4k timelapse video but not at the same time as shooting RAWS. In the Z6 they made it possible to do both at once. Yes the ability to plug in usb power is the other one that relates to timelapse. Other than that: Two card slots and extended shutter speeds beyond 30 seconds are the others I can think of.

Dear friend I had several of the problems you highlighted in your video. I was very scared of the possibility of recording a video separately from the images captured in Time Lapse RAW. I had no idea this was possible. I always thought that there was a setting to get the Raw Time Lapse files and if I wanted to record a video I would have to use the other setting present in the Menu. This was incredible. Thank you for your help and for sharing this information.

Great informational video and beautiful timelapses Richard. It took me few intents to understand the interval time when I started using the intervalometer of my D7100 back in 2015.... Now the Exposure smoother is a fantastic feature! I gave up long ago trying to shoot day to night time lapses because of all the work required to get rid of flicker. This feature in particular is a strong reason to consider upgrading my camera. Long life to Nikon!!

As a hobbiest who is starting to understand what I am doing and what my camera is capable of, there is always so much to learn and your videos are always so informative. I am lucky enough to have a Nikon Z6ii but i didn't really understand how good a camera it is for night photography I just bought what I could afford at the time.... lucky me ;). You explain the features of the camera and how you set up your shots in a way that everyone can understand. I have started dabbling in nightscape photography and loving what I am getting, no where near your quality but I'll get there one day. Timelapse is something that I had never considered but I am eager to try it now. Thank you so much for your awesome videos they are excellent for people like me who don't undertand the capabilities of the equipment I have.... there is so much to see in the night sky.

Very well presented Richard, and I couldn't agree with you more regarding the Nikon Z6ii and the exposure smoothing. I use LRTimelapse to process my photos and with the time-lapse video feature with shooting enabled, it does such a remarkable job that I will often forgo manually post processing in LRTimelapse. I currently use a Move Shoot Move rotator, but need to look into the Weapon Slider gear to further enhance my time lapses. Thank you again for you fantastic work in making a fairly complex subject understandable.

An excellent summary, thank you! I think the Shots per Interval is to allow for HDR time lapses where the camera is set to take say 3 bracketed shots automatically, then Shots/Interval is also set to 3. I think that would be useful mostly for daytime time-lapses with lots of contrast and dynamic range. And yes, an advantage of mirrorless cameras is their much more sensitive light meters allowing readings when it gets dark. I found DSLRs would stall out at about a 6 second shutter speed in Auto then just underexpose after that. You had to manually override once it got into twilight. Or use the TimeLapse View. Mirrorless cameras mostly negate ramping intervalometers like the View. Except they do allow smoothly ramping the interval as well as the exposure. Clear skies!

Great information on setting up for time-lapse. Really makes me want a Z6 II. I've been thinking about upgrading to a mirrorless, and this is just one more reason. I had no trouble following along when you went through the intervalometer settings. I bought my first intervalometer on a lark. Mostly I wanted wireless shutter release capability for lunar photography. I saw a Pixel 283 on Amazon for $25 as a "used-like new" item, so I bought it, not knowing anything about its intervalometer functions or how valuable the intervalometer would be - i had not yet started astrophotography. Its instructions are anything but user-friendly, especially to someone inexperienced. Several videos later, as well as experimentation on my own, I had a thorough understanding of how to use one. I typed up my own set of instructions that demystified the how-to, which my brother loves, because he was as bewildered as I was. After I bought my Nikon D600, I had to decipher how its built-in intervalometer worked, so I updated my instruction sheet with a section for my Nikon. It's functionally the same as yours, but without the advanced features that yours has. I'm glad to have seen your tutorial - helps to confirm my understanding of how to use it. I prefer using my external intervalometers, but if I start messing with external flash, I'll have to use the built-in intervalometer, since the external intervalometers and flashes use the same port 😞.

Great video. One feature that I use for both time lapse and my regular night photography is that the camera always goes to infinity focus when the camera is in autofocus and the power is turned off and back on. I find that it is always right on infinity focus after I power cycle the camera with either my 24-70 f/4 or my 20mm f1.8 lens attached. I never manual focus the stars anymore because all I have to do is power cycle the camera and it resets to infinity focus.

You don't get the full tomato though as exposure smoothing and interval priority is lost. Still odd as all the settings are exactly the same with the D850, suggesting that it should function in native mode.
