    It's an interesting camera, and there are two things Nikon can do with firmware updates to make it great im my opinion, one is CFexpress (or CFast 2.0) card format support, or should Nikon have included an XQD card in the package in the first place; and the second, the CAF tracking. It's not that it doesn't have proper hardware or ability to track subject, it recognise subject's movement quite well except it isn't predicting the movement (dog running) properly, which I believe is what Sony call "4D" AF with their cameras, by taking time (shutter delay/movement prediction) into consideration. And Thank you again Ev and Dave for bringing us the excellent review from outdoor, now get inside PLEASE.

  • @MichaelLaing71

    @MichaelLaing71

    5 жыл бұрын

    The a7III has a better feature set generally and the AF is very good. It also has far more native lenses. The negatives of the a7III are its build isn't up to the Nikon, The ergonomics are not great (I hate that my fingers nearly touch the lens when mount), the menu system is not the best but it is adaptable. The Nikon Z6 has very average AF. I am not a fan of the grip (no-where for me to put my little finger), single card slot, can't fit a battery grip (only battery pack). Video works very well and if you have native Nikon lenses, then you can adapt. The big question is what will happen 3-6 years down the line. Nikon will fix the issues with the Z series cameras and they have the potential to be a great camera in the future (particularly when Nikon release a full lens line up. The Sony, is a very good camera now and apart from the grip and slightly worse video spec's is a better camera than the Nikon (colour profiles can also be an issue but some like the Sony colours). I will add why just think about full frame? I own a D800 and I have pretty fast glass (105mm f/1.4e being an example). The main advantages of full frame are 1. better low light performance, 2. more depth of field, when compared to equivilent lenses (example: Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G vs Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2). When I upgraded to mirrorless earlier this year, I went for the Fujifilm X-H1 (which I prefer over the A7III, even though they cost the same (the AF is better in the A7III as well but the X-H1's AF works pretty well). Since then though Fujifilm have released the X-T3, which is a great camera and in around 15 months you will probably have the X-H2, which I will hopefully be buying). Of course getting off the subject. The low light performance of Full frame is noticeable but a lot is down to the kind of things you are going to shoot, so for me, I don't have much of an issue. With the depth of field, I really don't have an issue with APS-C when compared to full frame. I rarely shoot at f/1.4, apart from when the subject is further back where I have the subject in focus. There are considerable advantages of shooting with APS-C, The cameras are cheaper and can be smaller, the same can be said of most lenses, which makes a dramatic difference on camera (with Fujifilm, the lenses are also better made). APS-C camera's are much easier to carry around (also an advantage of Micro 4/3 system), with my Fujifilm I enjoy carrying around a camera and a couple of lenses, with the Z, with lenses mounted, you are getting a bigger system and when you add, adapter or faster native lenses, you are carrying a bigger package. I will also add, with a camera system like Fujifilm and Olympus, they have great ergonomics generally and their cameras feel like an experience and the cameras are enjoyable to use. I have never got that with Sony or Nikon (whilst the ergonomics are nice with the Nikon generally). If you are thinking of just now, then the Sony a7III would be the better choice, if you are shooting anything other than Nikon. In 5 years time, I would probably say the Nikon. Personally I generally look towards the long term when it comes to cameras (another reason I went with Fujifilm) but I am sure the A7 series line up will be very good in 5 years but I am speculating here.

    @Daniel Spaniel That is another points, Sony has a corporate wide policy of forcing customers to up grade often(as a A7 shooter how many times they have upgraded their same basic camera...making it a very expensive "cheap" camera. They get people to upgrade in all their product lines, by limiting replacement parts and access to service. Try getting a 4 year old Sony anything repaired. You can't. The dropped parts when a model is dropped. That policy has killed their products in a number of industries. My field was recording music and had a large recording studio decades. When Sony introduced a reel to reel digital 24 channel tape deck I bought one to rent to film scoring studios in Hollywood(my own studio used Swiss made Studer tape decks which made service and parts a major advantage to them). The deck cost me $124,000 plus a control panel for $18,000. It worked fine but 18 months later they notified me the I could make advanced pre-order of the new model, only 156,000. They did not tell me that parts for my current unit(wear parts are replaced on hours of use basis like on airplanes) were no longer going to be available! Rollers and rubber parts that needed to be replaced every 6 months crippled the machine by not having them availble The value of that one deck dropped to $1000 for salvage value. I talked to the Sony service center...it is same one for Nikon...asking for my friend who wanted a new knob on his Sony a7II that was broken when he dropped it and the tech said a new model was out, a7III so they can't get any parts anymore. He advised not getting Sony if one intended to use it more than1.5 years. My friend had to buy the a7III to get a working camera. So in 3.5 years, he replaced the same basic camera 3 times!! He could have bought a D5 and some great lenses for what is had spent on Sony upgrades, for a camera he hardly used. Sony thinks that is smart business and so far it has worked because a whole generation of users replace their camera every time a new model is introduced, before they ever really learned to use their old one. Nikon users tend to use their cameras much longer. I can't afford cheaply made cameras that need to be replaced so often when I can buy a D850 or D3 once every 10 years and I expect the Z6 to be viable for the same length of time.

    310 "average" shots/charge is CIPA's battery rating for this camera. But, "real-world" testing from photographers/reviewers yielding closer to 700 photos/charge depending on how you configure the camera. It really depends how long the camera is "on" between shots, how much video you capture, how the EVF and LCD screen is set up etc. I personally shot street style photography for almost a full day from 6AM-4PM and still had 25% battery.. Sorry, it is not a black and white answer. But, I hope that helps.

    I don't seen any difference in focusing speed between native and adapted lenses. If there is, it is so slight I never noticed. For some types of subjects it is faster than my D850 and far faster than my D800 but for moving subjects the D850 is more firmly locked on. I am not a sports shooter but did use both in a ice skating competition and I got a higher keeper rate with the D850 but for my normal work, portraiture, studio full length, theater dress rehearsals and dance clubs, the Z6 is very sure and I have not misfocused on an eye yet. You would need to experiment to see how the modes offered are best for each type of shooting. The modes are different from the D850. In video, the tracking was actually very good over the whole frame. If all I did was ice hockey or other very fast unpredictable action, a D850 or D5 is the best option, but for my shooting, I am loving the Z6. I bought a Z7 first but started thinking the large file sizes and the fact of already having high res covered with the D850 and D800, after two weeks I talked to the store and asked if I could exchange it for a Z6 plus the differences in cost between the two in the 24-70 and 35mm Z mount lenses. They agreed but I had to wait a day before another shipment came in. So now I have the 35mm 24-70 which I love, and the 50 1.8. Z mount plus the FTZ adaptor for using all my other Nikon lenses plus Tamron 15-30 2.8 G2 and a few Sigma ART lenses. All of them work great on the Z6. Now I have a lower res camera for travel,, walking around and commercial shoots when 24mpx is enough. There is a full stop better low light performance of the Z6 over the D850. That was a welcome surprise. I like using flash for fill even during the day but seeing how low of shutter speed the IBIS permits, and how good 22k ISO looks, there are few scenes that are too dark for that camera without flash. The IBIS is the best I have ever seen.

    Unfortunately not many people talk about the biggest problem I have with it: if you have a quick release plate on your camera (where it belongs, otherwise it's not very "quick") then - depending on the plate - you can't mount the FTZ adapter. Same if you put the plate on the adapter. I really hope they will release a better adapter.

    How is the usability of this camera compared to the a7iii (menu system, focus system, etc)? For a serious amateur and family photographer would you recommend the: z6, xt3, a7iii, or a6500?

  • @stanspb763

    @stanspb763

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you do not need the capabilities of the Z7 or 6, the XT3 is a lot of camera for $1300, and the lenses are small. It is well built, like the Z7/6, much better than the Sony. The focusing for fast moving subjects is better on the Sony a7III but not that much better to accept a camera without weather sealing a really poor egonomics and menuing system. Fuji, Canon, Nikon and Panasonic all have better ergonomics and weather sealing, build quality. Also the Sony lenses are really expensive for good ones because they have to be so complex to make up for the small flange and long flange distance. On telephoto lenses it makes less difference but at mid FL and wide angle, the small flange makes lenses to become more complicated with more light attenuation (T stops). After shooting Canon for 25 years when I switched to digital, at the time, 2008, Nikon just was better sorted out and felt much better in the hand. I have been shooting Nikon since that time for many reasons. They have performed well and up until recently, had the best DR and lowest noise. But sensor tech has improved so most brands of FF cameras now have about the same DR as the D800. None exceed it by more than 0.2 stops but even Canon which really lagged behind in sensors have caught up. there is a theoretical limit that has been reached for the current silicon Beyer style sensor and there is very little difference between the brands now. Any camera made in the last 10 years is capable of delivering high-quality images. The camera plays only a minor part of image quality, far less important than lighting, composition skill, lenses, subjects, makeup artists...so invest in lighting and spend some time in art galleries to train your eye. A crappy camera with excellent lighting is will beat a great camera without great lighting every single time, no contest. Just as in the film days, post-processing now is as or more important than back then when everything had to be post-processed. Someone skilled in photo editing and processing will have a bigger advantage than any camera could provide.

  • @stanspb763

    @stanspb763

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually the preamps are just defaulted to high gain so hiss is heard. Set the gain down and use any of the electret condenser mics and recorded signal to noise ratio will be good. But only in rare cases would anyone use a mic mounted on a camera. The mic needs to be close to the source of sound. That is why field recording is almost always done in commercial shoots with a boom operator to get a mic overhead just out of the frame. Wireless mics are so cheap now there is no excuse for not having them so sound and image are in sync....light and sound travel at vastly different speeds so if the image and sound recorded on the camera, it the source is over about 30 feet, the timing difference between the image and sound, becomes very irritating to the viewer. Sound at standard temp and pressure travels about 1100 feet per second and the threshold of perception of dislocation of image and sound is about 30ms with most adults getting the mic close to the source solves many problems associated with the field recording of sound for picture.

    It is not short cuts, it is difference capabilities. Image quality is much better with the Z cameras than a D3, and the Z cameras have better low light performance, better color science, better connectivity. The D3s was a great camera, the best in its day but it is hard to compare it to the D850, D5 or Z7 or 6, they are different more capable animals. Must be some stepper motor magic going on. Nikon doesn't do a clear job of explaining the 5-axis magic in the Z lens combo setup when used with the Z6 Z7 bodies - Or am I missing something. Personally, as a person who has average to large hands, I hate that the Z6/Z7 has no where to put my little finger and the grip would have helped with that, as well as shooting in portrait and with Nikon planning to release larger lenses like the 58mm f/0.95 Noct it would have helped with the balance of the camera.

    There will be a number of grips available. There is a lot of flexibility now that its connectivity is so good, and camera control can be incorporated into a grip with Bluetooth module( about $1) plus the switches so more options will be available for the Z cameras than the DSLRs which needed direct electrical contacts. I have large hands also and enjoy the Z size but like all my gripped cameras, I added a hand strap. As a result it is more enjoyable than carrying my gripped D850 and D800 all day

  • @MichaelLaing71

    @MichaelLaing71

    Nikon have said that they have a battery pack in development the MB-N10. This does not feature a shutter button, command button, control wheel or bluetooth. A hand strap is useful for certain things but it still doen't get past the annoyance of not having anywhere for my little finger to go. Which I don't have with my Nikon D800 or my Fujifilm X-H1. Now if Nikon have changed their minds regarding a battery grip and introduce bluetooth, they are going to charge a pretty penny for it (because that is what Nikon do now days) but for now, there is nothing about a battery grip going to be made available.

You have the option with SD, thank Sony Sony does that :).. (And I doubt any "god" has to do anything with Nikons decision :-p ) At least for me that is much more important.

    A lot of concern over the XQD cards by people who assume all cards are the same. Not only are the cards much more durable and protected from exposure but the whole interface and bus is much more advanced . The camera was designed from the beginning to accept much faster CFExpress cards so all the interface electronics is much faster and reliable for reading and writing. The mean time between failure rating according to Sony 2 orders of magnitude, over the best SD cards. Notice what Sony used in its pro cameras in the $30k and up range....XQD, One XQD card. Comparing the Z cameras to others that use the consumer grade low-reliability SD cards is like complaining that a laptop only has 1 SSD card instead of 2 5.25in 360k floppy disks. It reveals a stunning ignorance of that advances in the tech. The system is just faster as a result so the new firmware update that adds ProRes RAW output at 10-12 bit is only possible because the whole design of the cameras took into consideration of the higher performance of the memory and bus architecture, that includes all the advantage of PCIe bus that is light years ahead of old-style Dumb read-write processes of SD that was designed for low-cost consumer products where the only requirement being a very low price. Additionally, for event or wedding photographers the most redundant connectivity is built into these two cameras. With high speed wifi for up to about 120-foot radius or for the faster 1gigabit/sec wireless transfers to any ip address, network, computer or access point up to 660 feet using the WT-7 adaptor. None of the other brands have that and it changes how event and wedding shooters work. RF tethering is fast, reliable error correcting, and files end up on as many drives as you wish about 1 second after the shutter is triggered. Imagine how quickly an assistant could start a projected slide show, seconds after the first image is taken. RF tethering is how pros will work in the future and removable cards will likely be dropped from future cameras. A sports shooter who does not have remote file transfer will lose out in assignments while others, with Nikon, will have 14 bit raw files on the photo editors computer across the globe as the images are taken. News photographers will likely be required to file their images that way. Those demanding additional SD slots are obviously not well informed of the tech, or just trying to denigrate competitor's products. The XQD is one of the many key advantages of the Z system over Sony and Canon. For those who shoot outdoors, having the very good weather sealing in a Z camera, is a distinct advantage over Sony which left out all weather sealing to hit a price point, the same reason they opted for the consumer grade SD card slots of different speeds.

    The XQD card are not more expensive than the SD card. You cannot compare a the price of a Toyota AYGO with the price of a Mercedes G-wagen. You have to compare the price of the Mercedes G-wagen to the Price of the Toyota (or Lexus) Landcruiser. In the case of memory cards. The best performing SD card are more expensive than the XQD (at least in Sweden) and still they are not as good as the XQD in performance. PS. But I liked the review! DS.

    "Zed" eh? Question. Didn't Nikon say that the Z series world wide was to be pronounced "zeeeee..."? Lol. That is all I can find issue with in this review though. It was good and detailed. Chris and Jordan would be proud. Have a good day.

    The two card slot discussion is a problem for professional wedding photographers. For the other 99% of the consumers it is not a problem. At the end of the day one transfers the photos to a cloud storage and you are fine. In case it would fail permanently you lose some photos. So what, there are 364 days left.

    It is only a problem for KZread gurus who do not understand the difference between error prone SD and XQD, the most reliable memory available. Besides the trend is towards RF links to send files in real time to 1 or more editing computers or network servers, remotely which shooting.

    And 12 FPS doesn't matter when the AF is shit.... I've always used Nikon DSLR and was putting out till the Z6 and Z7 came due to my Nikon Glass... But for what i shoot. Mainly horses doing jumps etc.... Then this is just one HUGE disappointment from Nikon.. So guess it's time to move to Sony or maybe even Fuji...

    Jumping horses are one of the easiest subjects, you know exactly where the take off is. I can't imagine a properly used Z7 or Z6 missing on any such shots. Unless all your shooting is in indoor arenas, don't get Sony, they have no weather or dust sealing. Fuji is very good but action AF is not very good. One someone learns their camera and subject, missed focus on any camera is rare. The reliance on leaving focal plane decisions to the camera is a new trend with beginners but experienced shooters get the shot. I do a lot of portraiture and a lot of people just in the last year are saying they NEED eye focus, which just sound crazy, , why have been getting perfectly focused faces for decades. Why would a photographer want a camera to decide the focal plane on automatic? Cameras do not know what the intent of the image is and what it decides might be very different from what was desired from a composition point of view. A lot of KZread Gurus are slamming the Z cameras when owners are not, we are getting the shots and they are lovely. It really appears that they have agendas and that does not include what might be best for you, only what is best for their commissions on camera sales. Heck, when I had my horse ranch, breeding and training cutters for competition, the most erratic unpredictable movements up close in dim arenas , I never remember out of focus images and I was shooting manual focus film with a Canon A1, so why are KZread gurus so confused by having to figure out how to get in-focus images. The Z6 and Z7 are really competent rugged cameras designed to be viable for years to come. Why not get a D850 or D500, the two best sports and wildlife cameras available for less than $3100? They are surely better suited to sports/action than mirrorless of any make. But even that is not needed for jumpers. A z6 would easily handle that task.
