I’m glad you learned how to use subject tracking. Because watching you trust the Nikon AFC Auto Area to “get it right” on that last wedding was cringe AF, pun intended 😂😂😂. No but seriously, folks. In 2020 you can’t go wrong with any camera being made. You just have to know how to use your tool of choice to get the results you want. Don’t try to use a Canon like it’s a Nikon, don’t try to use a Nikon like it’s a Sony, blah blah blah you get my point.

After testing both methods, I would personally rather just run single or dynamic point AF all day, on AF-C like I used to with Nikon DSLRs. Smaller focus box, and I'd feel more in control overall.

I have the Z6 and Z7.. it's just like you mentioned.. the tracking is a nice feature, but the focus box is just wayyyy too large. Just have the box be the same size as a single focus point. That would instantly make a hugeeeee difference.

@@MUHZOMBEHS I agree the subject tracking box could lose some weight - maybe half its current size? Or, options - similar to Wide Area Small / Large, that would be ideal. I also feel Subject Tracking deserves its very own mode - not just a sub-category of Auto Area AF.

I like being able to choose my AF point rather than having the camera do it for me, and although I usually shoot single-point AF on z6, for subjects moving (people walking down the aisle, dances, etc.,), I find the subject tracking very useful, as I can still select my point. My wish is that Nikon would allow us to change the size of the tracking box (and it has to be a quickly accessible adjustment).

First, I love all your work and reviews. They are so helpful! Second, thank you for doing this video and showing there is a way around some of the AF issues in the Nikon Z line. I currently shoot with the D780 (just purchased when my 750 shutter went out because I can't wait on repairs from Nikon). I shoot portraits and weddings, but have an opportunity to shoot sports (always a dream). I am seriously on the femce of making the switch to Canon for the AF. I know Nikon has the best hands down color technology, but with weddings and sports AF to me is tremendously important. With that said, since I will be starting "new" would you recommend the mirrorless line or the 1dx iii?

Here's my question for Taylor or any of you back button focus people..... If a couple is coming down the aisle and you're holding in the back button for continuous AF, how are you simultaneously moving the focus point as your composition changes? It's always made more sense to me to hold the shutter button half pressed and use the back button as a focus lock for when the couple stops and I need to recompose quickly.

More or less the same between these brands, Sony might have a very slight upper hand, but not like far from each other. The thing is when using a Dslr or mirrorless, you have to set the focus system based on what you shoot, not what others doing. The problem is, some people expect their cameras AF come out of the box perform exactly like they want. Not always the case.

For now I am sticking with my trusty Nikon D750 with its very accurate phase detect autofocus system which works 99 per cent of the time, so much so I can concentrate of the shot more so than the focusing. However, I am looking at adding a Nikon Z6 due more for its video system. Not sure about the Z5, as I would like the BSI sensor of Z6 which probably adds bit more detail than Z5, plus full frame 4K of Z6.

Even though I use the Z6 as pretty much my main camera atm and my D800 is gathering dust, I'm a strong believer that a product should not need others to say "You are using it wrong!" (looking at you Apple fanboys), a prodct shouldn't need workarounds for a simple function. The Z6/7 II really needs to get on the same level as the competitors if they want new customers into the system.

This is how I shoot in most situations with my Z6, love it. I use BBAF but it also works really well on half-shutter too (AF-ON set to lock exposure). For fast action I tend to use dynamic area af, for landscape and macro it's single point or manual. I really like face / eye tracking for single portraits but it struggles in low light. I feel like it gets in my way. Hoping for big improvements in the new Z ii models (and/or firmware updates for our current Z's).

I've thought about switching to Canon but the dollar hit sucks and what you usually find is the grass is not always greener on the other side. I'm sure Canon would have things I don't like too that Nikon does better. What are your thoughts on the difficulty of switching systems? Maybe you could do a video on your thoughts on this subject.

As a KZread video creator, the R6 has been really helpful. As a wedding photographer / video maker / landscape photographer - I’d rather take the Nikon files, form factor and lenses even now. Even if the announcement on wed is just a Z6 with 2 card slots and a little bump in AF improvement at a similar price point, I’ll be really happy with it. Oh, and shutter doors to cover the sensor when changing lenses hah.

I still think that using manual selection of the points is better in most scenarios. I’m feeling a lot safer knowing that my camera is acting like i want not based on some algorithm. In my experience with Z6, af-c dynamic 9 is best for most situation, it analyse the surroundings of the main point as well and acts faster. Af-s tends to hunt on dark surfaces, dark hair or dark environment but you can use when you need maximum of accuracy or in very dim light in combination with green light assist. As far as consistency, is far better than my D750, at least for my kind of use.

I just purchased a Z5 with the Nikon deal where you have 30 days to decide if you want to return it and you get the lens adapter for $49. I also shoot a d750 and Sony A7III. The jury is still out for me. I have only been shooting with it for a few days though. I really want to like this because although I love my Sony, I have resisted buying lenses because they cost so much and I have been a Nikon shooter forever (like before digital, 35mm slr kind of forever) and have all Nikon lenses. I'm not crazy about this autofocus system versus the Sony system yet but I am willing to give it the full 30 days. Maybe I am just not used to it. However, if I find myself reverting back to the old single point compose and shoot I may not keep it. It is very similar to the d750 and the WYSIWYG experience of the mirrorless is a definite plus. I have come to rely on that so much that I find myself thinking the view through the Nikon d750 is live view. You might want to check out the brand new Nikon Z6II. Sorry for my two cents if you wanted a Taylor Jackson more expensive and learned response!

Because with Subject Tracking, you're deciding exactly where to place the focus point - then it locks on that spot until you let go of AF-ON (or half-shutter, depending on your setup). For me, this is so much faster than using the joystick to maneuver the focus point. Much less thumb jockeying required. Subject Tracking doesn't make the wrong choice. Auto Area AF might be the mode you're thinking of (this mode is supposed to lock onto whatever is closest). Very different than subject tracking.

  • @timk8258

    @timk8258

    3 жыл бұрын

Because if your subject is moving around you have to keep chasing them around the frame with the AF joystick (if anyone can do that quickly and reliably, I'd be impressed), or totally change your frame to keep the AF point over their eye/face. There are lots of situations where I want to keep a relatively static composition but still keep my subject in focus as they move through the frame. That's where eye AF (when it's working well) or subject tracking are super helpful. Additionally, even for static photos where the subject is standing still, it's so much faster to point the camera so the tracking box is over their face, hold AF-On, and then recompose the shot than it is to move the AF point around the frame. I've been working like this for years with the D750 in 3D tracking mode and it works great, except for the huge limitation that the AF points don't reach all they way across the frame. On mirrorless that limitation is removed.

Z5 af seems to be much worse than Z6/Z7 at the moment. I wouldn’t use this as a basis for what Nikon AF is capable of, especially when their second gen mirrorless cameras are being revealed tomorrow. Not to mention the R6 he’s comparing the Z5 to is $1000 more.

It is absolutely ridiculous that Nikon still struggles with AF. You'd think by now they would know how to

For a system with auto in its name this seems like a whole lot of manual work to get it to work properly.

Honestly it works very easily, just like 3D tracking that has been in Nikon DSLRs for years. The only thing that makes it a little cumbersome is that it's a sub-mode of Auto Area AF and you have to press a button to get it started. It should be it's own separate mode. I much prefer telling the camera what to track and *then* letting it do its thing vs letting it automatically grab the first eye it sees. The only reason I don't shoot like this all day is that the tracking box is still too big so sometimes Eye AF is more accurate. Hopefully they fix that on the Z6II.

I’d say to spend some time listening to audio books and getting a bit of a business education while you start setting up shoots! Best of luck!

@9 - D Alguno Great start! It is nice that you want to be a photographer in the future. You are young and probably should not think of it as a business yet. Continue to master the camera, lighting, and composition. Have fun while you learn. The money (business) will follow.

Taylor...buddy...why fight this...you know you like what Canon is doing in the mirrorless world...stop fighting what you are feeling. Leave the dark side of the Force (I did!) and come to the Canon side, we have...everything.

Why can't Nikon get the focusing right on the Z series? If they don't-and fast...they are done. Toast. Canon and Sony are eating their lunch!

I would never pick up Nikon Z5 because of this AF problem (yeah, it is a PROBLEM, if you would try to concentrate to produce high quality photos from weddings and events with many guests). I will go on with my SONY products where we don`t have such an issues. Might this be possible to over come after new product update with the softa what is controlling/guiding AF in the future? Then Nikon Z5 would be one REALLY nice option, BUT just then... not now...
