Not having 3 cfs card slots is nothing to complain about. Nikon themself said its a D850 successor. For my use case its the better purchase than the Z9. Too many people are getting hung up on features again.

After having my Z8 for a week, the only thing I’m disappointed with is the wimpy “shutter” sound. I hope they give us some better options in some future firmware update. I will get used to it, I’m sure and I know that is the ultimate in nit-picking. This is a fantastic camera.

Great video! I think it’s important to remember that the r5 does 20 fps like the a1 does 30 fps, meaning in 12 bit compressed raw. If you want to shoot 14 bit on the r5 its with the mech shutter at 12 fps. The r5 is not really an electronic shutter camera like z8 and the a1.

I agree here… the r5 doesn’t have the terrible rolling shutter issues that I have experienced with other non-stacked sensors. But the z8 is in another class entirely at 20fps.

Agree. The Z8 combines the MP of the R5 with the stacked sensor and fps of the R3 and A1

I see you have a z 100-400s which in a previous video you claimed wasnt sharp at infinity focus distances and you had sold it. So out of curiosity is this new copy any sharper?

Second copy is better at 400 but still not great. The lens is spectacular 100-250, great 250-350 and solid 350-400. Do I wonder if Nikon handicapped it because they released a 400 prime? We may never know for sure. However this second copy of the 100-400 out performs the 70-200 at shared apertures and focal lengths and that was enough for me to permanently add it to my kit since about 75% of my telephoto work is in the 135-300 range.

Also, very weird observation that makes zero sense to me: I like the IQ better on the z8 than I do on the z9… to my knowledge there is no technical reason for this to be the case, so take that with a grain of salt. But I got some sunset shots a few nights ago at 400 with z8 that I’m really happy with 🤷

@@summitbid this is the second time am hearing the image quality of the Z8 is better than Z9. Wowed to say the least. I don't have the Z8 yet but will soon,will be glad if that's the case as I find the Z9 quite noisy.

In regards to the sensor Rez, I think The Mfg's have spoiled us, because I have prints 24x36 from 8 mp, and many 16x24's from 24mp, So there still is plenty of room for cropping. I have a Fuji GFX100s and a few of their lenses, but I'm going to sell it. It's too slow and after an extensive shoot this past spring, the images are great, but too large of files. I have a very hot computer, and it handles them fine, but I'm not seeing the return that I thought I would. So I sold my Z7II and just got the Z8, So far I love it! I think it will be with me for a while.

How do you like the z100-400 this time?

I’m having much better luck with my second copy… it’s super sharp 100-300 and solidly sharp at 400. I still wish it had biting sharpness at 400 but I could get the 400 4.5 for that at some point.

Not having dual CFexpress type B slots is a deal breaker for me and honestly I didn’t expect the camera to have them. At its price point no other camera can compete with the features of this camera, but it’s sadly not for me. I’m going to be saving a little more for a second Z9.

If you get a good price on the Z9 the extra features are easy to justify. It’s nice to have an entry level Z8 but the Z9 is great value for the feature set it has.

Great video. Thank you. Just a quick note that the A1 Raw at 30 fps is compressed raw. Uncompressed is 20 fps, same as Nikon Z8 Edit - you did mention that the 30 is compressed but I guess I wanted to add that the Sony and Nikon are the same otherwise

The difference between a 45mp and 61mp sensor is the difference between a 20 x 30" print and a 23 x 34.5" print. Nobody is going to notice that. Nikon and others have settled on the 45mp sensor for video.

Printing is less my concern than cropping. You would have gotten 29mp dx files. But that being is said the camera in general would have been much slower

@@summitbid After cropping, there is still an image for viewing, and the difference in mp is again insignificant. As photographers, we work in factors of 2: ISO, shutter speed, aperture-squared [for area of objective lens], etc. Here we are fixated on a 15% difference, which is inconsequential for the final image. We are misled because the megapixels square the actual resolution, so we see a number that seems different.
