All our game activities - on the Chobe River and on land within The Chobe National Park are hosted by Professional Pangolin Wildlife and Nature Photographers who feature in these films.
Whether you are a seasoned professional or absolute beginner, everyone is welcome at Pangolin Photo Safaris.
It is our firm belief that The Chobe is the best year-round nature and wildlife photography destination in Africa. There is always something to photograph in The Chobe!

    Pangolin Wildlife Photography - Here on Long Island, NY, this morning I left my boring house during my confinement, and used my D750, 1.4 teleconverter and 300mm Nikkor f/4 lens. I had it on 3D focus tracking which is kind of a habit with me for many years. Auto ISO from 100 to 600 and caught some small birds which were setting up homes in my four bird houses. Got some great shots but when we are released, I will be using that kit either with my D750 or Z7 in a local park which has many varieties of wildlife. Thank you for the information and will try out some of your ideas.

    i have 2 D 750s. One set up with a Nikon 300mm f4 lens with a 1.4 converter and the other has a Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens which Is a good sharp lens in most conditions but can be just a bit " soft " on really dull days or other low light conditions. my settings are almost identical to yours Danielle except I usually set my own ISO. I would like to use Auto ISO but always worry about too much Noise. I know you can set a limit on the Low and high Iso settings, What would you recommend I set them too to avoid to much Noise bearing in mind the lighting in the UK is not as light as you have there, especially in Winter. What would you consider as the highest Iso to avoid Too much noise. at present I usually use ISO 800 up to 1600. I usually shoot Mainly Birds small and large and the odd Deer. Thanks Clive. p.s love your Videos.

    Great video with lots of information so important to many of us. We buy cameras , we buy lenses , and we are trying to apply different settings just to get the best shots. Many of us struggles with such settings. The one written in the manual are just so basic. Here with this video , we can simply listen carefully to you and follow the rest. Of course , each camera is different, but most settings are pretty much the same .It doesn't matter if you are a Canon , or Nikon, or Sony shooter.After few years in the field I learned that everything depends on light. I can memorize "perfect"settings in my head , but they will be useless if there will be not enough light. So we need to learn how to be flexible and how to adjust things. I am a Nikon girl, from the day one,usually shoot wildlife at F/8, 2000-2500 sec , ISO 100-1600, M mode, spot/matrix /group/metering.Thank you Danielle for this very useful presentation.

    Hi Margaret. Well said, and thank you. As you say, the basics all remain the same and when to apply them comes with experience. Then once the light disappears...you know how to compromise. As soon as you know the upper and lower limits, the magic happens :-) Your settings are pretty much on par with the settings I prefer/find work best. Thanks again!

    Hi Ingrid, good to hear from you. That's pretty much perfect. It might be a good idea to keep the shutter above 1600 to be safe (if you have enough light). I am just a bit weary of using spot metering as the lighting changes drastically from one shot to the next. In high contrast situations, I would consider using spot, but I find that using my exposure compensation is quicker. Should the spot fall on the darker part of the subject the ISO will push up very high,unnecessarily so.

    very interesting tuto. does group works nice too for portrait photography with d750 to focus on eye ? you select matrix metering but isn't it spot metering a good tool in manual mode to have an idea of exposure ? I have seen some tutos affecting top front button to spot metering so when bird could be dark on aperture priority mode, they presss this button and shoot continuously.

    Thank you so much for the video. I’m planning to purchase my very first DSLR which is Nikon D750 along with 85mm 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 G lens. I’m wondering is it still worth to buy this camera considering 5 years old?. The concern I have is from D750 is - 1. Slower AF, 2. Shutter speed 1/4000 which is half the D780/Z6ii/Z5 1/8000. Are these show stopper for D750?. Purpose of buying a camera is for taking Portraits, Still, Landscape, Bird, Product photography (learning) and of course my kids. It would be really great if you throw some lights on my concern to make a wise decision.... other options I have considered is Nikon D780 with one of the lens and Z6ii with the kit lens... apart from D780 and Z6ii I have been suggesting to go with D850 with the kit lens. Thank you and looking forward to your suggestion.

    one tip here, Danielle, if you set the "release button to use dial" to ON , then you can let your finger off the button, saves strain, and having to hold the camera awkwardly, esp. if you have a long lens on!, just 'tap' the button, then turn the dial, no more straining :-)

    @@PangolinWildlife that's alright, this is one of those settings not everone knows about, more obscure, but one of the first things I set on these cameras, esp. as some of the custom button options, flash as one eg. need both command dials to set everything ( two menu sets, one locked onto each dial); and being able to hold the body with the left hand allows your thumb & finger of the right to use BOTH command dials simultaneously, saves time if you need to change BOTH options for a setting, like the iso, and the iso mode/limits.

I was also still using a combination of back-button focus and shutter button, have changed that to back-button alone, thanks for the advice. Shutter speeds on the Chobe seem to be much faster than I can generally get in the light conditions I mostly shoot in at home, or early mornings/late afternoons in game parks, the reflection of light off the water seems to add so much more light..... Thanks for a very informative video!

    Hello Leon! Thanks for the feedback. Very accurate comment about the shutter speeds - I find that we also move around on the boat so like to keep them fast to make sure of sharpness. As I mentioned before - everyone has a preference between shutter and back button focus. Neither one is right or wrong - it does come down to personal preference. You're welcome here anytime!

    D500 every time. It has a better auto focus system and slightly better dynamic range. The D750 is a great camera, but for wildlife and birds the D500 is a better option - if you have the cash for it.

    I always setup my camera’s U2 setting group with back button focus off and group autofocus and as close to automatic as I can get. That way I always set the camera to U2 mode before if I hand it off to another person and I know they will be able to focus it correctly. Typically photos where I hand off, are of my wife and me and so if you are not careful the novice photographer might focus exactly between us in single point focus mode.

    Hello Guy. It all depends on budget, subject (birds/wildlife?) and destination, but if weight is an issue then the 200-500mm from Nikon is the best choice, together with a 70-200 or wide angle for closer shots. Does that answer your question?

  • @daniellecarstens8287

    @daniellecarstens8287

    Hello. You're 100% correct. I switch between single point and "group". However, when I am shooting a subject that is moving fast, or coming towards me from a distance, it is sometime difficult to pick it up with single point and then I use Group to increase my chances of picking it up with the other 4 points around my centre point. But single point is very accurate and a great one to use. All about personal preference :-)

But the end of last year nikon release new firmware and off course i loaded immediately:) then i realized 14-15 is dropped 11 pic. almost 1,5 second After that i tried to back for firmware factory settings but i couldn’t! Hello, if I understand correctly, your buffer capacity went down after you did a firmware update? Are you shooting RAW? If so, did you perhaps change your RAW file recording from 12 to 14bit? Also, is your secondary card slot function set to backup? If it is and you backup in RAW, it might also slow it down? If I don't reply here (I don't always see messages coming in), please email me danielle@pangolinphoto.com, I'm happy to help you figure it out :-)

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ben, sorry for the delay in replying. We should have video coming up soon about full frame vs cropped sensor cameras - keep an eye out. Generally speaking, full frames give you the best depth of field that a lens can give (beautiful blurry backgrounds and foregrounds to isolate the subject) and also because full frame sensors do better in low light/high ISO situations. Those are the 2 big advantages for me, specifically in wildlife, but there are plenty more.

Can you plz help me understand which one to consider. Next week I’m ordering to get one so it would be great if you reply by in next couple of days. Thank you in anticipation. Regards Shashi

    I would say to be careful with auto ISO and matrix metering. If the subject is darker, and the scene is bright, this could cause the system to underexpose your subject. IMO if you're going to use auto ISO, I would recommend using spot or center weight, especially if the background isn't that important. I personally will set the ISO manually and then check and change it as I need to. Usually only takes a few seconds to do so, and unless your lighting is changing constantly and quickly, I would advise against using auto ISO. Sometimes it works great, other times it doesn't and I prefer to take that variable out and just set it manually and check it periodically and adjust as needed.

  • @PangolinWildlife

    @PangolinWildlife

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello, thanks for the comment. I make use of exposure compensation + matrix metering when using auto ISO (capped at the maximum that I would be happy with it of setting it manually). If I have a dark subject with majority light background then I'll mostly start by overexposing to make up for the cameras metering, but Centre weighted will also work. Having 3 settings to change when shooting wildlife is just too many and shots get missed this way - no time to check the shot and readjust usually. I guess it depends on circumstances. -Danielle

    What sd card do you use on aD750 as it’s buffer isn’t that great?

  • @PangolinWildlife

    @PangolinWildlife

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello - I would use the fastest card available - something like the SanDisk Extreme Pro 170MB/s UHS-I cards to get the best from the card & buffer. The buffer capacity can be increased by many factors such as keeping ISO low and shooting 12bit RAW in stead of 14, or JPEG instead of RAW. Hope that helps! -Danielle
