Nikon D700: Legends Never Die!

Ғылым және технология

See deals for the D700 on eBay: ebay.us/rpoFY5
The Nikon D700 can be had for $500 on the used market today - making it one of the best deals in photography. A legendary camera with a cult following, it still lives up to all the hype. Here's my quick review of the camera, with some commentary and sample pictures.
CORRECTION: I said that the D700 doesn't work with AF-P lenses. My mistake, it's compatible with FX (Full Frame) AF-P lenses, but not DX (Crop) AF-P lenses. Full compatibility info here: www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV...
TL;DR the only two quirks when working with AF-P FX lenses:
- The camera does not offer the "Manual focus ring in AF mode" custom setting for enabling/disabling focus ring operation in autofocus mode.
- If the standby timer is allowed to expire, the focus position will change when the timer is restarted, requiring refocusing. Specifying longer standby times is recommended for manual focus photography (remote photography, fixed photography using a tripod, interval timer photography, etc.) and in other situations in which the shutter may not be released immediately after focusing.

My D700 journey: I owned and loved one for years, but thought I need to upgrade to the latest "state of the art" cameras, so I got a Z6 and sold my D700. You know the saying "you don't really know what you got 'til it's gone" - absolutely applies to the D700. I regretted selling it so darn much after 2 months that I thought I might be better off with the successor - the D780. Gosh was I wrong, because it is basically a Z6 in DSLR body. Same boring image look, same weird skin colors that you can't get close to what the D700 did, no matter how hard you try, you won't get the same "magic". So I sold both the Z6 and the D780 to get my beloved beauty back and I did. And OMG am I happy now again. I got a totally unrealistically great deal on a MINT D700 with 35.000 clicks - it's looks and operates like new. You would never guess it is 10 years old! I use it professionally and don't let ANYBODY tell you that 12MP is not enough to do professional work or huge prints! They even did a test with Peter McKinnon where they compared huge prints done with a 100MP and a 12MP camera and you just couldn't tell the difference. Also modern interpolation softwares like Gigapixel AI can upscale your images up to 8 times the original size with almost no loss and sometimes they look even better than the original ones. Get a D700 NOW! The shutter counts on used ones will only rise from here on!

Thanks for sharing your journey! I think at some point we all encounter the "one that got away" camera. For many it's the D700 :) The cure for G.A.S. ! And you're right, modern software gets better and better so the low megapixel count becomes increasingly moot. Hope your shutter goes to a million!

@@lensvana Thanks man! It definitely is a cure for G.A.S. - I hav absolutely no desire to get another camera for photo-only purposes. And you really don't need anything else than a D700 or a D3 (which is basically the same sensor and processing with a slightly different reading algorithm than the D700 - so the handling and the images are pretty much the same).

I bought mine back in 2009 and it is by far the best camera I have ever used. I Own the D80, D300S, D800E, D500, D7000 and 2 D700 and 5 fujiflm XH1, Gfx 50, XPro 3, T20, X 100. There's nothing out there that feels and render images like the d700. I feel image quality (color sine, resolution, aesthetics) are all subjective, and you can argue that preference of the majority becomes standard, but I still think it is subjective. With this in mind I got the D800 as my first full frame, and later on my hobby progress into collecting vintage cameras and got myself a D700. I think I still like my D800 more because this is the first full frame I used and maybe got spoiled by the features of the D800. The resolution alone unlocks a lot of potential for capturing photos whether intended or unintended, and intended because you know you can do something with the crop, and the dynamic range on the D800 is so wide, it give an amature a lot of room to correct mistakes in post. This gives a lot of freedom when you know what your camera is capable off. With the D700, a lot of the features you get from a high resolution and high dynamic range becomes "limited", and there for challenging to me. So I use the D700 to challenge myself to be a better photographer. It challenges you to take a photo correctly the first time(although the DR on the D700 is no slouch either), and not use post as a crutch.

I’ve used one of these professionally for several years and would never part with it. Weddings, local news, sport. It can do it all. The colours out of this things are genuinely special and I can spot the photos taken with the D700 compared to my D750. As for the 12mp sensor, the reality is that’s more than enough for most people. I shot a lot of football (soccer!) and as well as being used in print, I’ve had a team use some of my images on 6 feet high posters in my city and honestly they looked great. Most people don’t need a fraction of the features (or megapixels!) of the new cameras being churned out today for thousands of dollars. Working photographers’ equipment has to earn its keep and for most, spending $5,000 on the latest body makes no financial sense in the current photographic market. If you can’t make great photos with a D700, the problem is with you, not the camera.

Excellent camera - excellent video. When I was able to afford a used D700 and started shooting with it, it was the first time ever that I did NOT feel that digital cameras were very inferior to the Nikon film cameras I owned. All the D3 era Nikons are fabulous. I also have a D3X which I love for portraits. Some people say it's no good because of it's poor ISO capabilities and low frames per second - so the D3X gets dismissed and passed over. if you don't need low light shooting and you don't need high frames per sec, then the D3X is another great alternative 12 year old choice for a 24 Megapixel Nikon portrait camera.

Bought mine 1 month after release in 2008 and still use it professionally as a backup. I like combining it with film because it doesn't have the clinical resolution of my d850. It has worked flawlessly for 25 years. My F6 film camera manufactured around 2016, they made that film camera til 2020, should out live me. These cameras are not beasts or tanks, they were build to be reliable and long lasting. Yes, only 12 mp but if you are not printing and only viewing on line, you only need less than 8 mp.

I agree, ISO 6400 is the limit for the D700. It also depends on the lighting. I've shot at ISO 3200 in bright consistant lighting & at snapshot size you can't tell the difference. Your RAW editor of choice can make a difference as well; Lightroom is just not good at noise reduction & sharpness in general, I use DxO Photolab & the quality of processing is remarkable. A great portraiture camera but can also produce great landscape photos as well.

I believe the D7200 has a slight edge in high ISO. However past ISO 3200 the D7200 shadow recovery will be noisier. The D7500 is a much newer sensor so it will be even better in low light / high ISO. I would choose the D700 for size/weight/cost reasons, but the D3 is essentially the same thing except in a more robust package with even more features and higher fps!
