    No gimmicky features, complicated menus, crazy high megapixel and no video. All for a good reason because the D700 has one job and that job is helping you to create the best picture you can capture. Images from the D700 feel different, special and has very natural, organic color. Sharpness is never a issue with only 12MP and the large photosites absorb and respond well to light. The feel and weight of the D700 feels like a bygone era of when cameras were built like tanks. The magnesium shell is thick, the weight brings stability especially with heavier lenses and the large grip makes it easy to carry. Used prices are very good, buy them and enjoy them until the very end. There won't be anything else like the D700.

    Almost 1/2 way through 2023, with the Z9 almost never more than hands grab away, and the D850/D500 gathering more dust than they should, this week I picked up the D700 once again, to relearn the camera, and remind myself of the feeling I had when I picked it up (my first digital camera) for a few hundred dollars 5 years ago. Now, I can appreciate where things have gone, but also where they were. "Dynamic 51 point auto-focus" with 3D tracking . Really, now. The camera feels old, but solid. The LCD, begging to be updated. That one card slot thing. The shutter slap might outduel a Harley...well, perhaps I embellish a bit. For the speed of wildlife, action, and sports the Z9 has provided much of the speed I have needed. The no blackout EVF and silent shooting, button mapping, and versatility, make my D850 and D500 jealous. However, putting the D700 in hand, with no particular rush or project, the files and images brought that smile to my face, the one that I had when I saw the first images off this sensor. I decided to get a bit crazy, and combined the D700 with an equally old, but legacy piece of glass, the 200mm f/2. I shared those images with my friends and they were surprised when they heard the camera that made them. I liked the way it allowed me to slow my thoughts, and enjoy taking my time, and frame the shot. In all honesty, I can't see using it when I am pressed for time or have to capture action. The Z9 is a beast in that venue. But there is still something about the D700, and the look of the images, that remind you of why this camera and sensor were so popular, and why the images created with them won so many photographic contests.

    @@hachewie I do understand, and the D700 still holds a special place in my photographic heart. If it brings you joy, by all means, keep shooting with it. I'll leave you with one other thought. When taking portraits, and using glass with shallow apertures (105mm f/1.4, 200mm f/2), the AF of finding the subjects eye is extremely fast (even on f-mount glass) and accurate. It makes the experience for the subject and shooter, a bit quicker and less painful. ;-) Keep posting and thanks for the response as well.

    Nice ode to the D700. I salivated over it when it was new but couldn’t afford it back then. Of course a decade later I could. It’s still a beast of a camera and you can still sell prints off of it. I’ve never had a customer say “I hate that photo because it was shot on a D700.” which is now “obsolete” technology. The photos look amazing. Sure it doesn’t have that amazing dynamic range a Fuji GFX has but for anything portraiture this thing is an absolute beast. I mostly pair mine with the Tamron 45 1.8 and never looked back. I love mine!

    Haven't shot mine in 30 minutes! Not the resolution of my d850, but plenty for the internet and small prints. Doesn't have the dynamic range of the d850 either and since I purchased one of the first ones available in 2008, I have definitely got my moneys worth out of it and the vertical grip. So for me, if it is raining, foggy, dusty blowing sand, d850 stays home. The colors that come out of it and a voigtlander 58 mm 1.4 are gorgeous. My d200, and these 2 digital cameras look so much like my f100, f5 and f6, THREE GD times I have grabbed the wrong camera for a shoot. The prototype of them all is the f5 designed by the italian designer who designed the DeLorean, Maseratis and Lambos. Brilliant design.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. Are these 80x60 prints with outstanding detail from very close inspection. Was wondering if i could make 60cm tal panoramas by stiching 3 frames made with super sharp 50mm lens. Will the detail look like 300ppi despite being a lot lower?

    I came to the same conclusion as you did. I got one with 19 000 actuation and a 24-85 mm lens for $295, shipping included, so I couldn't pass it, and I have lot of old nikkor that I've been adapting on my GH5. I agree with you the quality of what the D700 throws out is equal to most sub $3000 modern mirrorless cams out there. There is a crowd, they even have a FB page from which I was expulsed, who believe that the D700 is actually better than anything that was made after. Isn't it amazing? this decent cam is good but it seems to be at the origin of some kind of very misplaced nostalgia. I would NOT have bought it for $500 but since I had already all the lenses for my video with my GH5 at $300 I couldn't pass it. I would NOT recommend it to anybody starting or wanting to get super serious. I still think it's better to find a used Sony A7RII or A7RIII or even a lumix S5, first edition, or even a A7III used to start a photography hobby.

    I bought my D3 and D700 new in 2007-2008 for shooting weddings. But I found both to be amazing. I moved to model portfolios and street photography in New York City and quickly became famous for my images. More recently I bought a Z7 which missed having 3D focus tracking so it rests in my equipment closet unless I shoot sports. And the colors of the Z7 were not as good as my older gear. The D3 uses the same sensor as the D700 but with a smaller viewfinder view. The D3 now that I am 83 years old seems mysteriously heavy.

I moved for sony 3 years ago A6300, and for real the D700 it's a dinossaur, it's a diference like day and night, but If it's today I don't make the the transition, because Nikon D700 it's a beast, ith right glass and the proper knowledge making pictures truly amazing right of the camera. the camera feels nice, it's heavy but enjoy to use, the batteries last and last, the colors it's beautiful right from the camera, the picture controls and the possibilities from that it's the thing i really miss from this camera, and if anyone have doubt about that camera it's a really masterpiece, for damily reunions, nad daylife photos it's a beast, and because mirrorless the dslr glass it's really "cheap" today I really recomned people on a budget to buy dslr because for 1/3 of the prize of a mirrorless setup he makes a amazing setup with DSLR ;)

    You and some other photographers mention that this camera reproduces colors extremely well. Is that when shooting in raw or JPEG format? I understand that when shooting in JPEG The camera will essentially "develop" the photo whereas in RAW you are just getting the unmastered data. Sorry for the ignorant question. I don't know a lot about photography yet.

  • @hachewie

    @hachewie

    I love your question. I have found that editing in Lightroom, you can do quite a lot with editing colour of both JPEG or RAW. I haven’t experience editing with any other software. The biggest difference (for me) shooting in RAW is you can bring up the shadows more before introducing too much noise. Also, I rarely shoot in JPEG so this question may be better answered by other people. You are correct though that when shooting in JPEG the chosen picture control settings will be added to the JPEG so you will get great looking images straight out of the camera. The RAW images are a little more flat looking without editing.

    Photography isn't about the camera; it's about your vision and skills. The camera is your artistic tool, and if your creativity falls flat, even the fanciest camera won't elevate your work. It's not a magic wand; it's an extension of your vision. Taking a great photo involves more than just clicking a button. It's a multi-step dance: capture, process, and display. If you fumble any of these steps, your photo won't shine. You must master all three to craft stunning images. So, is the Nikon D700 your golden ticket? Any camera can be your muse if you know how to use it. Your creative eye is the compass, guiding you to what makes a picture extraordinary. Keep in mind that camera companies are in the business of selling new gear. They'll market the latest and greatest, but remember, your camera is just a tool, not a guarantee of brilliant shots. And those KZread photography gurus? They aim to stay relevant and capture your attention. Be cautious of their advice; sometimes, it's more about trends than timeless art. In photography, it's you who decides what's great. Embrace your creativity, learn the craft, and let your vision shine through. Cameras are just the paintbrushes in the hands of the true artist - you.

    Hey guys and gals, what's up? Is 16.000 a lot for the shutter count of this camera? I found one for about $380 around my area and I am considering getting it, but I wouldn't like it to brake down in a couple of months ( the shop does offer a 1month warranty :-) ). I don't know how it was used but they say it's looking ok from a technical and aesthetic pov (I will check on that before buying). It's mostly for fun, I'm not a professional photographer. I've been playing with the D3000, D5100 and Olympus cameras for the last 10 years or so. I tried my friend's D700 a few years ago and I loved it. Not sure what to do, what would you do? :) Cheers!
