The "heat wave" effect is a natural phenomenom called mirage, with rising heat causing image distortion. It is just that the higher zoom picks up the mirage.

Yes you can! In the video menu you can set autofocus mode for single AF or continuos AF. I use single AF as it does not continuously try to focus thus sometimes losing focus. With single AF you can focus yourself and the focus stays fixed.

I’ve had this camera for years and haven’t been able to figure out how to do a multiple exposure shots. I’m pretty sure the programming is there, I just don’t know where to find it in the menu.

I'm deciding between this camera and the Canon Poweshot sx50. My last camera was 18x while good I would like to find something with more zoom that still takes great photos. Zoom is important as I am disabled and I love to photograph wildlife and nature. Also would like a camera that can do depth of field shots and that is good in low light situations. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thx

Actually, at long distances and with such level of zooooom, light refraction through the air should be more noticeable since it always happens, even if ambient temperature is, say *medium*... so that "heatwave effect" is just that and probably nothing to do with zoom mechanics.
