Nikon 28mm f/2.8 E Series Manual Ai Lens Review

Ғылым және технология

A review of the Nikon 28mm 2.8 E Series lens. This lens is similar to the 50mm 1.8e in terms of build quality, focus ring, and value. In order to use this lens a camera body with the Ai indexing tab will be required. The models that I know will work are any of the current 7000 series cameras, any FF, and the D1's and D2's.
See my written review: www.outsidetheshot.com/nikon-...
There is heavy vignetting at 2.8, less at 4, and it is mostly gone at 5.6. I'm not crazy about the heavy vignetting, but if you're after that type of effect, I greatly prefer to have it come from a lens than adding it in post. The vignetting could also be removed in post, but I prefer being lazy.
While I'm sure there is some distortion going on, it was not apparent enough to bother me. While the lens is decently sharp in the center, there is falloff around the edges. I'm not bothered by soft edges. IMO, corner to corner sharpness causes lenses to be over-corrected resulting in flat dead looking images. If you need corner to corner sharpness, the wide angle 1.8g series lenses are great. The downside being the $750 price tag.
Copies of the lens can be had for ~$50-$60 by watching for eBay auctions. The lenses being sold for "buy it now" are clumped up around $100-$130. When copies are available on Amazon they're also similar to the eBay prices.

I bought one in 1984. Based on test reviews at the time I just couldn't see paying more for the regular Nikkor version. Really happy with it image quality is excellent.

I have this lens, use it on d7000/7100, it is amazing. I absolutely love it, great focal length on a crop sensor. Find a cheap, minty example and buy it, you won't regret it.

Hi, five years later... do you still have this lens? It seems that distortion across the frame is reasonably well controlled. Would you still grab this lens for a small/light/inexpensive lens to carry on street photo walks and so on? Many thanks in advance.

HIi I have that lens since its introduction, when I was shooting exclusively with a Nikon F2 (bought new, that I still own). I took less than 200 shots with it so its like new. I will try it on my D500; D750 shortly. I also own a 135 F2.8 that I used quite a lot for portrait. I have to find a way to modify it to be able to use it on my cameras.

This is a decent but not stellar lens. It certainly does not merit the bad reviews it has received in some circles. My only real complaint is that it tends to be flarey.

Just got and used a used 28 f/2.8 Ai-S and tried it on D750. Very nice but it means taking extra care and extra shots with fingers on aperture ring and focus for several shots some times, to make sure I get the look. I can't see clearly enough at all no matter what almost. BUT can depend on infinty stop and other settings so can go by sight, by zone focus, and live with with magnification (if screen is not washed out by sun) . Too bad I am not going to bother with it on my D7500. I want wide and a 20, 20 1.8 G is expensive enough. 20 2.8 Ai-s is not much less and would I be sprting my slef to get it in stead of the modern lens? I ahd 20 2.8 D which was not bad but traded it away .

.. that is in Live view, with magnification to adjust focus, then swith back to veiw finder to adjust compostion and take the shot. I will not probably ever buy more than 1 or 2 AiS. Isn't it worth it to not get the E series?

And so now NOV 2018 got used D7200 and love 28 AIS on it. Easier in my hands to work it all while looking thru the viewfinder and see what I am shooting and the focus dots stays in view. Left eye use after all.

Perhaps the biggest dog Nikon ever made (or sold, since they probably didn't actually make it). If you want to put a 35 year old 28mm on $1,000+ body, and cannot pop for the excellent 28mm 2.8 Nikkor AiS at $175-225, look for a last (AiS) version of the 28mm 3.5, at around $75. Talk about penny wise, pound foolish.
