Probably to pause the game for the whole, as you can see he is skipping waves and using skill using pause instead. Technically better than holding down skill which only slows the time

pausing the game allows you to position your mouse in the exact spot you want, so when you un-pause you can click immediately without losing any seconds. Also lets you breathe lol
