Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 GORE-TEX

In this video, I take a look at the new Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 GORE-TEX (or GTX) waterproof road to trail shoe. To test how waterproof they are, I tried running in them through two fords in Shere, Surrey, UK. Thank you for this review. They just be came available in the US near me, today. I gave them a go based on your review. I find them to be very comfortable, more so than the Pegasus 39 road shoe. I did not care for that Zoom unit as it always felt like I was stepping in gum, instead of something full of air. It was not present here and I feel as though it is a better ride being all React foam. The upper is great, and it rained here most of the day today, and these had no problem with traction, and my feet stayed completely dry. Great shoe that I look forward to putting a ton of miles in over the fall, and winter months. Thank you again for the review.

    Yeah funny we were both at Shere on Saturday and started from the same cricket ground. I didn't see any crossing of fords in your half marathon race however :) Yeah I thought about the "bright" coloured Peg one and then thought I "need" a black shoe for one that will inevitably soon be taken through wet muddy terrain and the reflective laces arguably and oddly make it more visible than the "off white" one against car lights and stuff.

    @@TimGrose unfortunately or fortunately, It’s been raining everyday in Tokyo since I got the shoes and even a Typhoon is approaching from the south so I have plenty opportunity to test the shoes. The environment where I live is totally concrete jungle, middle of Tokyo, but it rains. And I’m satisfied with the shoes. I’ve been wearing them 3days in a row , my socks never got wet. And the good part I feel is… •Really light weight •Thin materials but it covers your feet really well •It’s a soft light texture around the heel but holds your whole heel great. • The new added stretchable texture around the achilles to ankle brings safety feelings for not getting the shoes off. The parts I don’t love •The sole is Little bit too leaning forward( high heels & low front) But that should be good for running I guess. •Sole is little too thick , that might strain your ankle. •Extremely Slippery on wet man hole But overall, water tight is enough for me and really comfortable. Same size in these for me as all my other Nike shoes but in a UK 13 no half size options. With trail shoes perhaps depends what thickness of socks you want to use. I would probably go with what you normally go for. Always think bit big is far better than bit small as during a run your feet tend to expand a bit anyway.

    I actually just started the return process with Nike for my Pegasus Trail 3 GTX because for some reason they have lost their waterproofness, the last 2 times i wore them my feet were soaked. I purchased them in April so it's great that Nike is letting me return them. I initially wanted to just exchange them for another pair but they are out of stock in my size for all three colorways so I'm having them give me a refund on a gift card and will be purchasing the Trail 4s. Hopefully they are just as comfy as the Trail 3s although Nike skimping on some of the materials has me worried a bit about the durability, but i guess I'll see.

  • @TimGrose

    @TimGrose

    Жыл бұрын

    Ah that's disappointing. I just googled whether GORE-TEX degrades and certainly got the impression it should not happen that quickly. That said do you think water got in literally through the shoe or more because the top of your socks got wet?

  • @NonLegitNation2

    @NonLegitNation2

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TimGrose The first time I summed it up to my socks getting wet. I was wearing shorts and it was downpouring all day and i work outside, so I figured that just like you said the top of my socks got wet and the water just slowly crept into the shoe through my socks. But yesterday I was wearing jeans and it wasn't raining as much as the first time, but there were a lot of deep puddles on the ground, the tops of my socks were dry but water still got into the shoes. After examining the shoes it looks like the glue may be coming undone towards the midfoot on each shoe. I am pulling and pushing a lot of weight around outside so it may be causing separation of the upper and midsole which could be causing water to get in.

    Hi Tim! Thank you for the review. From the laces I can see that you have narrow feet, which is generally great for Nike shoes. Would it be possible for you to comment whether the toebox and the forefoot of this shoe is at least OK for wider feet? Thank you!

  • @TimGrose

    @TimGrose

    Жыл бұрын

    They would certainly be good for feet relatively wider than mine as I had to my pull them in a fair bit. That's pretty common for all my shoes however. My foot shape is relatively narrowest in the midfoot and I don't mind a bit more room in the toebox if can secure my midfoot. That is basically the case here. The length of them I found normal compared to my other Nike shoes so no worries there.

  • @Semprefi

    I recently picked up these shoes and I definitely like them better than the 3s. Im wondering if the water got into your shoe or did you get your socks wet above the shoe and the water wicked into the shoe . While there's no question that your feet would get wet if you just stood in water that was above the tops of your shoes I think they form a seal that will keep out most of the water in the scenario you had in this video if the socks were below the shoes

  • @TimGrose

    @TimGrose

    I think in this instance bit of both. Socks definitely got damp and certainly on the 2nd ford, the water level was well above my shoes. Of course “normally” I would have just used the bridge! After first gentle cleaning with a sponge and soap Gore tex stoped working until I add a layer of water repellent spray. It lasts a couple of runs and then you need to renew. It overtook the Peg 2 one as my most watched ever and still is in 2nd place. View counts so far suggest a non ZoomX shoe has little hype but for sure I like this Peg 4 one a lot more than the Zegama partly as when I go on trails I expect wet/muddy conditions and a want a shoe to cope with that. Then again my general idea of a "trail" run is something like an old railway path with a non Tarmac surface that is very runable but might well be wet/muddy. If it is dry normal road shoes (even a Vaporfly) normally fine and indeed often better as trail shoes just tend to be heavier.

    It does not snow much here in the UK but this type of shoe has always been good when it has. I think how dry your feet will be largely depends on how challenging the conditions are and also whether you are covering up your legs and socks with water resistant materials. If you repeatedly put your feet in water or snow that is a lot deeper than the shoe then water may well seep in over the top.

Should I look for a different pair? I really like the design of this and the water proofing it has. What are ur thoughts Tim?

  • @TimGrose

    I have to admit to knowing very little about weight lifting but as a general purpose gym trainer with the benefit added of the water proofing for outside use then I think it would do the job fine. The outsole grip should be decent enough for lifting I would have thought. I think specialist lifting shoes tend to be a bit firmer, heavier and sturdier than running shoes but this one, being a trail shoe, is probably a decent compromise and that's always going to be the case if looking for a trainer to do lots of things in.

    If the water does not enter from the top of the shoes in regular rain or small lakes like the one you had to run into do the feets stay dry for just a regular walk on a rainy day or seeping the foot sometimes at the half of the shoe.?

    Should be OK in that scenario but if it is raining hard and the "exposed" part of your socks are not covered and get very wet, your feet might then get wet. I don't think there is much in it but you are probably right that the 3 is slightly roomier at the top. Indeed I have now cut my laces on the 4 as had too much excess. So that might give the impression the shoes are narrower than they actually are. In a way having the 3 and 4 is handy. My feet are so narrow for my length that I can probably get away with small variances in the toe box. I would say I can get a tighter lockdown in the 4 than the 3 which might be a factor. Of course if you don't clean shoes shortly after a very muddy run, going to take longer to get it all off. One advantage of a black shoe is that I don't feel that I need to clean them very often.

    In hindsight, perhaps have said more on the comparison but think serve somewhat different use cases. In my UK 13 the Peg Trail 4 GORE-TEX is 30g lighter and noticeably too. Other than the obvious waterproof difference, I think fundamentally the Peg is a road to trail shoe for wet/muddy conditions whereas the Zegama is a trail shoe for largely dry conditions that is passable on the roads. The outsole of the Peg isn't overly thick and even on the road you don't notice it too much and feels a bit like a road Pegasus but without the air bags so has a certain amount of ground feel whilst still being nicely cushioned without being excessively soft. Despite the ZoomX, the Zegama isn't anything like say an Invincible for softness but probably does feel slightly softer but just a lot more shoe and outsole too. For me who wants to actually "run" offroad, not for hours on end and not say clamper over rocky, technical terrain the Peg just feels such a better bet.

    I don't have any direct experience of Spartan Races but the conditions sound like they involve running through thick mud with lots of fairly deep water so imagine whatever you wear going to get feet soaked straight away. As such probably going to want a trail type shoe that drains well. So not sure how well this would drain in such conditions as GORE-TEX shoes by their nature aren't designed to easily let water in but, if they do, not so easy to come out. But if there isn't too much water they may well work well. When I went through the second and deeper ford for this video a bit of water did creep in but more just made my socks damp so was fine to run on.

Similarly, as I showed here, if the water depth is above your shoes then again your lower legs and socks are going to get soaked especialliy if you "plough through" and create lots of splashing then inevitably your feet will get wet. Gore tex has 2 systems. One is the old type where there is like a sock sawn in the shoe and one where its part of the lining.. This is lighter. Water will not penetrate it! but it does not let much sweat out. We do sweat allot in your feet even in the cold. This is a problem with Gore Tex. You need to balance the heat creation with the isolation materials etc.. Or you will get very wet feet from the sweat (sauna) or very cold feet from the freezing temperatures.. It is an amazing invention but it has its limitations. In hot weather its a nightmare..

I was pleasantly surprised that without getting the shoe wet at all, I felt my feet got no less "hot" in this compared to a standard road shoe. Remember some of the GORE-TEX shoes got many years ago had an almost unbendable upper and so were almost rigid. The upper on this feels really thin and flexible and so was actually surprised it still keep the water out as long as the water level was not so deep that it went completely over my shoes and down my legs as it were.

    They were fine for me on a hot day last summer for about an hour run. I think though that the general idea of this GORE-TEX edition of the regular Pegasus Trail 4 is it that is a weatherised version for wet/muddy conditions which is more likely in the winter. If what you are intending is likely to be mainly dry conditions then the regular one ought to be a little better fit for purpose.

  • @TimGrose

    @TimGrose

    Жыл бұрын

    I think with those sort of reviews you need to understand the nature of the test and indeed the limitations of this sort of shoe in that regard. As you may have seen when I stood in water that does not go over the top of the shoes then no water got in. However if say I was literally to pour water down my legs then chances are that some water will get in as there is not a complete seal that way. When I ran through the shallower ford for this video, I thought the water proofing worked well. However, when I tried the deeper one with a water level somewhat higher than the shoe itself plus a lot more splashing than inevitably the top of my socks got wet and a bit of water seeped in. In "normal" shoes either test would have left me totally sodden feet straight away.

    Ah but it's only waterproof at a water level lower than the shoe and the second ford I went through was well above that and I did so quite fast so there was a lot of splashing too. As such the "exposed" bit of sock would have got wet and seeped down a bit anyway. I found previously with these GORE-TEX shoes that with more normal running in wet conditions (i.e. not ploughing straight through the biggest bit of water can find) that they keep your feet dry a lot longer than otherwise.

    These are not waterproof over the laces. if you step in water that is deep enough to cover the laces, water will go in. It does have gore-tex all over shoe except under the laces. this is kind of misleading because a goretex shoe should also cover the laces. My other goretex shoes like salomon have no problem steeping in water submerging my laces. Just something no one is talking about. i bought mine and returned it thinking it was just that particular shoe but each new pair i received had the same thing. So don't submerge this shoe over the laces under water.

  • @TimGrose

    @TimGrose

    Ah that's a shame because as you may have seen in this video, I essentially stood in water that covered some of the laces and no water got it. What was an issue however if the water went over all the laces as then water could just seep down your legs and socks. I do my shoes quite tight though due to having narrow feet. I wonder if that is a factor as having the laces tight means I have quite a good seal as it were.

I did once get caught in essentially a thunderstorm in a pair of GORE-TEX shoes and yeah water got in but felt would not have been any "better" in any other shoes and I really was just glad to finish that run as there wasn't a dry bit on me anywhere.
