Nijat Abasov's tournament has been absolutely scintillating. He reached the Semi-finals of the FIDE World Cup 2023 by beating many top players which included Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Peter Svidler among others. He booked his spot to the Candidates 2024. He lost to Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals, but now fights for the 3rd place against the current world no.2 Fabiano Caruana. This was their first classical game and the way in which Abasov destroyed his opponent was just phenomenal. In just 26 moves. Check out the game with IM Sagar Shah's commentary.

Hard to blame fabi after that exhausting tiebreak against pragg yesterday
At this point Fabi only wants to go home so he's like "whatever the result is I'm still qualified for the CANDIDATES, I just wanna go home". At this point it doesn't even matter if he finishes 3rd or 4th place. Probably he's main goal was to win the #worldcup but unfortunately for him it didn't happen.

I think world ranking is a myth except NO.1 place.

i agree, but its not that fabi and the other top rated players is inacurate. but rather the lower rated young players are rated to low. i guess it takes time to get a high rating. ELO is defently not perfect. but its fun to watch the young indian players do so good. and they are defenently underrated in terms of ELO.

People go there for winning ..once u lose last battle then it doesn't make sense for them to battle for 3rd or 4th place .

He IS in the 2700 club. It's just not on paper yet. Paper ratings don't always reflect ones trrue level.
Doesnt look like fabi is interested. I have a feeling fabi will come back very strong in candidates

6:55 What is black did knight to c5? If white moves knight to f6, then black can take with the queen and not the pawn... if he takes the queen, your knight on c5 takes the queen... all square, no?

Unfortunately this match matters for fabi bc if he can’t win tmr and magnus says he wants to play then tough luck fabi. His chances of being in candidates are 99.9%.

He is world no.2 for a while now, he will qualify via Avg rating anyways. Yes he will fight for the 3rd place in the world cup, but he is very likely to qualiify either via Ratings or The grand prix circuit

Fabiano didn't cared about the 3rd place he came to win world cup unfortunately it didn't happen
Caruana should learn how to fight back with Modern Benoni not suffer like this in queens gambit

F6, Nxd5, fxe7 then exd8. White gains an extra queen but if rook moves then gains a knight

You mean after white played f5, black should have played Nd5 or Nc4? ... It doesn't work on account of Rxg7+ Rxg7 Rxg7+ Kxg7 f6+ and black loses his queen.
