Singing bass players are so underrated. Most people do not understand the difficulty of the rhythm often running counter to the melody line. To explain I sometimes compare it, to that "trick" of using one hand to tap yourself on the head in a vertical motion while rubbing circles on your belly with the other hand. Playing Bass (or drums) and singing is kinda the mental version of that.

I've never _really_ had a problem with it. I'm by no means the quality of bass guitarist or vocalist that Marko is, nor would I sing all that often in any of my old bands, but for me, if I'm playing something live, I mostly go on music muscle memory because I've played whatever I'm playing a bunch of times before. When I was on stage, I'd be actively thinking about performing or singing rather than playing. The only times I would focus on my playing was when I had to step on a pedal or wanted to throw in a little bit of improvisation.

Tuomas isn't a big fan of growling but has infused Floor's growling techniques in some of the NW songs. I recall Floor stating in an interview once that she was sometimes sore the day after a performance. In another interview she said that she does enjoy working out while on tour and feels it is important to keep the whole body in shape so that would probably help maintain her stamina throughout a lengthy NW tour.

Floor explained her windmills in a video. She actually had a problem when she was younger, sought treatment and was given advice on how to reduce wear and tear on the neck. Notice how she stands feet apart, knees bent and hands braced on her thighs. That braced position solves many of the issues compared to an unsupported stance. The original singer Tarja had an awesome windmill and with her arm positions, she looked like an aircraft about to take off. However, she wasn't braced and now has neck problems. She is still performing, but the windmills are a thing of the past for her.

I am shocked that I am the only commenter so far. I love your reactions. You notice the little things. Regarding the head banging, windmilling, etc: I don't know about the after-concert massage. Seems like it would be warranted, for all of them. Regarding Floor's full-on windmilling, I have heard that it actually helps her singing while on stage, as it helps keep all of her neck muscles relaxed. Notice that she is always in the same stance while doing it. It looks calculated and ritualistic. I have also heard that she said recently that her windmilling days are numbered, so it seems she recognizes that her neck muscles won't always be as toned as they are now and that she is prepared to modify her performance on stage to suite her physical limitations as she gets older. Very wise.

As a previous comment explained she consulted with a physiotherapist about the safest way to headbang and it seems the Windmill with hands braced on thighs is actually less damaging than the normal back and forth headbanging with can lead to whiplash like you would get in a car crash. The Deep growl that Floor gets is using the false vocal folds only.

I think the reason you've gotten so many requests to revisit this song is because of your earlier admonitions against the growling style of vocals. You were completely correct that trying to sing in this style can be VERY harmful to your voice... if you don't know what you're doing. But there is definitely a way to do it healthfully and sustainably for years and decades. Floor is an excellent example of this, though there are many more. There is a world-famous vocal coach named Melissa Cross who, somewhat by accident, has become a vocal guru to metal singers around the world because she has taught them techniques that allow them to still growl like forces of nature without harming their vocal cords.

I'm a little late, because i had some technical problems earlier today. The cruise version is ok - it's power is the more intimate setting. This is a grand stadium show with better A/V-quality. How on Earth Floor can remember the words of about 15 songs in every show (and Tuomas put lots of difficult words in their songs, and a quite little breathing breaks 😵). I have to practice days for a one simple song. Maybe we can call it professionalism. 😎👍

Headbanging is not a healthy practice by any means, but I guess it's just a part of metal culture. :D I remember Tarja saying in an interview once she got some serious problems and she thus doesn't really do it anymore, just the occasional swing once or twice in a concert and Floor has also suffered some health issues from doing that. Oh, the commitment!

I’ve heard how Floor does it, but from my own perspective, the key word for headbanging is, as weird as it sounds, “relax”. 😂 Tense up too much and you’re gonna be feeling it in the morning I assure you. If the muscles are warm and you’re not tensed you can swing to your heart’s content. I suppose it’s like anything physical too - the more you do it, the less it hurts (barring any health conditions of course.) 🤘🏼

Perhaps I am an oldster, too (well, I am, in many ways ...) because I have the same protective worry when I see her windmilling. I just wanna send her a massage therapist to help relax those poor little muscles holding her magnificent noggin on top of it and going through a spin cycle again and again. The growling, too, fascinates me. I think I need to look into the mechanics of it a bit more. Let me know what you find out!

"I'm sure I would use that somewhere in my life?" Yup, anytime you want to clear a room of people or shorten a lineup, a deep leopard scream should do the job. We don't hear it in this performance, but Floor has an awesome big cat scream which she used in a few ReVamp songs. It's funny to watch her snarl at her guitarist. He knows it's coming, but he still can't stop himself from flinching. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYKEx9WFdrfUhco.html at the 0:38 mark. It's just fancam so the audio is poor, but we can still hear the snarl clearly.

Your joy watching all of these Nightwish videos is practically palpable. A Nightwish cover of Pink Floyds High Hopes is a song you TRULY NEED to react to. I would recommend watching the Pink Floyd version if you are not already familiar with it before you see what Nightwish with Marko signing lead could have been. i love Floor but this is a moment not to be missed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqN5ptCPlby_qbA.html

If you ever look at Floor, you'll notice her neck is thick and muscular from all the years of headbanging and windmilling. Or maybe it's just from holding all that awesome that most people don't have in their vocal chords. One of the two.

At the Nightwish dot com tour page does not show a one on-one off schedule so apparently she can handle shows in a row. She repeatedly explained that she needs mental rest since her empath characteristic tires her quite a bit. So a quiet room and no people around for a bit is required once in a while/every show/week/month.

I think the issue with the cruise version is the backing track is turned up more like the studio version and it tends to drown out Floor. This one is more clear, but the cruise is I think more polished of a sound over all.

It's easy to forget this is the first song of an two hour concert. Where Floor Growls, belting, sings operatic/classical style parts... Doing this on tour several times a week says something of her vocal stamina and skill.. Just as Brittney Slayes in Unleash the archers this is mind blowing... Along with Jinjer, the three metal Queens of metal.. There is a video who shows Brittney go to a club after such an own concert and in a karaoke session belt out a veery demanding Queen of the ryche song. Like it's nothing... So you may wonder what kind of stamina these lady's have....kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGxkprSqn6rffNo.html
