That dude is Mr. Tapio Wilska! "Tapio Wilska (born 19 September 1969) is the main vocalist of the heavy metal band Sethian. He is also the ex-lead vocalist for the band Finntroll and is the current vocalist of Canadian band Obscene Eulogy. He gets his inspiration from bands like Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Dead Kennedys, Venom, Thin Lizzy and The Pixies." When Nightwish released their 1998 album Oceanborn, Wilska was asked to do the male vocals on the tracks Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean and The Pharaoh Sails to Orion. After his appearance on Oceanborn, Wilska also performed on the song 10th Man Down on Over the Hills and Far Away in 2001 and once again with The Pharaoh Sails to Orion on Nightwish's DVD From Wishes to Eternity. "No-one hadn't ever heard anything like that" While this is not entirely correct, I can still confirm, that it blew me away right from the start. And to this day, "Oceanborn" still remains in my alltime top 20 list of albums. During the 90s there were several bands who experimented with symphonic elements, even female operatic voices. Paradise Lost, Waltari, Rage... just to name a few. Power Metal was also already wellknown for its classic influences. So it seemed just to be a matter of time, till somebody combined these two things. Really new was a female operatic front singer (not just a guest), the insane songwriting talent, the great musicianship and the passion, delivered as one tight package.

@@strogaa Oceanborn also deeply affected Tuomas psychologically. He felt as if that he put everything he got into Oceanborn and because of that, had a "writers block" when we begun to create their next album. This is also why Tuomas views/used to view "Wishmaster" as a mediocre album, because he felt Oceanborn was just so high above everything he had ever created. He talked about this in the Nightwish documentary "The end of innocence" which can be found on KZread.

From Wishes to Eternity was the first DVD the band released. The concert was the 29th of December 2000 in Tampere, the tour for the Wishmaster album. Sami Vansa was with the band for another 6 months or so after this, before he and the band parted ways. End of an Era DVD is the 2005 concert, in Helsinki. There was a video on yt of this song live with Marko singing, but I can't find it anymore. P.S. James LaBrie is Dream Theater lead singer, if you're like me you probably remembered that about 30 seconds after you stopped recording. lol

Love early Nightwish, it was so special. One should always remember how young they were and the quality of the songs and live performance (there are great remastered versions of the DVD out there). Definitely talented beyond most of their age and experience. Tarja's voice and timbre were exactly right for these songs and her vocals throughout this demanding set were really impressive. Thanks for the reaction!

Actually, it’s around the year 2000. So it’s a little wonky at moments with the syncing and the lighting. The sound is really good though, imo. This one is probably the most chaotic song of the concert. I think I heard someone say when Tarja got the song, she said something like I can’t sing this. LOL. I don’t like growling either, but I think it’s fine here. Tuomas loves to make Tarja sing fast. There’s about 3 of them. People complain about her diction and I get it. But how do you get words distinct when you’re singing opera that fast. This concert is really high energy. There’s a couple of slow ones and an instrumental to mix it up. I put a request in discord for another one Wanderlust. Another fast one

Wow, this was a full plate of interesting comments! There were many interesting viewpoints, but I want to point out again your comments about Emppu´s guitar skills. I agree strongly with you that Emppu is so good that he don´t even have underline it. But still he can do everything that Tuomas throws at him. And of course he is also pleasure in stage to watch and listen, because of his humbleness, good spirits, humor and sporty-like-activity (he got black belt in judo). Now he is one of the two remaining original members of Nightwish and a real backbone of his childhood-friend Tuomas.

However, there are two songs that I like that have growls in it (though I can't say that I have heard a lot of songs with growls), Nightwish's Yours Is an Empty Hope and Tarja's Dead Promises. I mean the Pharaoh Sails to Orion is okay to me, but not a song that I listen to very often.

My default is not to like growling as a main vocal (although I'm fine with it for highlights, e.g., _Yours_ _is_ _an_ _Empty_ _Hope_ or Delain's _The_ _Quest_ _and_ _the_ _Curse),_ and it definitely reduces my enjoyment of Wintersun; but sometimes it doesn't bother me at all, as here. Thank you for giving a little insight into why!

Tapio and Tuomas are friends. He was between gigs at the time so Tuomas gave him work as a roadie and had him put in some vocal work. I agree about the growling. But it proves Tarja can work with near anyone and sound great. Also watch Tapio tower over Tuomas who just under 2M/6'5" tall himself. Tapio is ' the godfather' of Finnish Metal nowadays A short bit of Death Metal you might like on the official Crewish ( the roadie's own band) album Twice. Its their 2nd.album (2020) recorded during lockdown so they coukd earn money during lockdown. Also of course getting Tarja and Tapio to rerecord the song from Once (2004, and Tarja's last with the band) is a lovely eastee egg/referrence/word play. Tuomas gave them permission to use and monetize the song, then as a bonus he redid the keyboard sections for them. It is also in small part the 1st thing Tarja and Tuomas both contributed musically to. Not together and everyone at their own studios. Both Thomas and Tarja have lost parents. Of course knowing eachother back in school they met eachother's parents so she was the.1st to reach out to him after his loss. Tarja has ever been kind like that. Its good to see that ties of friendship can be mended at least in part. Tarja and Tapio reaching out to help the crew was a great touch.
