Tarja shaped the early first years - in fact 9 years - of nightwish and was/is still loved by "oldschool" nightwishler.. like me. I love Floor and think she is the best what ever happened to Nightwish after the fateful year of 2005. But Tarja added something unique to Nightwish in her time that is still present today. It's natural that Nightwish-Newbies "grow up" with Floor now and are used to her. Seeing old material with Tarja feels just "wrong" for them. But in fact - every singer (even Anette) contributed some magic to that band.

@@Songfugel Well, maybe thats because some older NW-Fans dis Floor just because she is not Tarja. I have seen that a lot -without any reason. It is not a competition. Instead I am happy to enjoy such a huge variety of NW-music. And honestly, so far I didn't hear anything of Floor that deserves critique.

@TheBlackiwid lol, well yes.. maybe thats right. I'm sorry. I think, she did a great job in Meadows of heaven and Amaranth on the studio album. But the old material was beyond her abilities. Thats purely my opinion of course. I know she is a good singer. And it was not her fault what happen with Tarja. She had a very difficult stand to make. And Nightwish's jump from purely operatic vocals to pop vocals... well, I think many fans could not take that. I hardly listened to NW when Tarja left. I only started again when I was in Wacken hearing Floor.

Everybody seems to forget that without Tarja, Nightwish would not exist. The first idea of Tuomas and Empu was to make an acoustic folk-rock band, but because the voice of Tarja was extremely powerful, they decided to do something more metal and gothic. Tarja is a perfect opera singer and she's called The Nightingale of Finland. And also I love Floor since 1998. I just hope for the next album she will get more freedom from Tuomas to use all of her singing abilities.

" Everybody seems to forget that without Tarja, Nightwish would not exist " Without Tarja??? No. Without Tuomas Holopainen. Then " Tarja is a perfect opera singer and she's called The Nightingale of Finland ". I haven't heard that before. And I'm searching on Google too. Nothing. So who calls her " The Nightingale of Finland " ? This info is new to me even though I live in Finland. Usually I do not comment here on posts. But that was a must. I have nothing against Tarja. But let's be reasonable . She also gained recognition from the band. She will continue her career. And Nightwish on its own.

@@tiinazagorianos3549 Ok, allow me to correct myself. Without Tarja, Nightwish would not exist in the form we know them today. As I've said the original idea was acoustic folk-rock band (think Auri, the other band of Tuomas... I guess he never abandoned that idea). You can check this fact easily listening to the old interviews of Tuomas. About the whole "Nightingale of Finland" ... I've read this in old magazine's reviews for the band in my native language, so I can't confirm that right now. I don't collect magazine's from 15 years ago, so you can ignore that. And finally, yes, Tarja moved on, the band moved on, everyone is doing the music they want and pursue their careers. I'm just tired and lately really getting pissed off by the people who dismiss the contribution Tarja did for the creation of the band, as she was just a robot programmed to make the noise Tuomas wanted. Come on.... This is just my opinion, a fan of Nightwish with or without Tarja, of Floor Jansen (with or without Nightwish) and of course Tarja's fan with or without Nightwish. People, please stop arguing about who's "the best" and just enjoy THE ART they give you.

May I also add that its widely believed, thru Tuomas' lyrics, that he was in love with Tarja, since very early on... she was the first singer. they all went to HS together. She was basically the love he couldn't have... she later met her husband, so just imagine. The Poet and the Pendulum is a very emotional song for Tuomas and it even shows how regretful he was in realizing how he handled her departure... which was with a written open letter literally right after this concert ended, everyone knew but her. I've watched this concert so many times and im not sure that anyone has ever noticed (since ive never seen comments about it) but in this entire concert, Tuomas and Tarja never interacted, its kinda sad.... I urge you to react to Everdream from this concert (i know you just did it with floor) but in this version you will see the emotional break tuomas takes at the beginning where even Tarja looks back trying to see whats going on (but obviously in a smiling way for the sake of the concert). In the letter they painted her out to be a diva, and thats the easiest thing to believe especially since in this concert everyone notices how she had multiple outfit changes but i think thats just bogus... floor has multiple outfit changes too, ppl just dont realize it since theyre all black lol btw i love floor just saying lol but in all the years following her departure, 14 to be exact, nothing has ever risen about Tarja being unfriendly or divaish to anyone... in fact what came to light more than anything is how much of a humble and amazing person she really is.... as you can tell, im a fan from old nightwish that got introduced to the band with tarja, but without a doubt i love floor in the band just as much... especially since i knew about floor since wayyyy before she was in nightwish, so naturally i knew she was going to be the perfect pick once Anette was gone. But yes please react to Everdream live end of an era and also The Poet... thank you guys for the amazing channel!

You're right on spot, no one has ever been able to prove that she is a diva, or hungry for money and fame. Contrary, her actions speak of the opposite, whereas the guys who say that she threatened to leave without a day's notice, they fired her without a day's notice ironically. They also profited from her departure, and capitalized on it 3 times, The Book, The DVD, and the New Album = Sounds like Fame and Money to me..

Tarja was their first singer and she was great. She was the role model for female singers in symphonic metal for years. Then there was Annette, the second singer, who was pretty good, but a little more popish and not quite fit in with the sound of the Band... and finally there was perfection, with Floor. Even the old nightwish fans, like me (well, 99,9% of us) absolutely love Floor and think she is just perfect for Nightwish.

What happened? She married another man! That's when tuomas attitude toward her changed. If you want to really understand Nightwish study their music from the beginning. Check out the "Wishes to eternity" DVD. It's here on youtube. Also listen to the lyrics of many of those early songs. Many of those lyrics tell a story of unrequited love (everdream, she is my sin, passion and the opera, white knight fantasy, etc.). Tarja and tuomas meet when they were kids. tuomas mother was Tarja's piano teacher. They attended school together. When nightwish was founded it started as an idea for a folk music project between tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja. All other members came later. tuomas and Emppu came up with the idea and tuomas first thought of Tarja as their vocalist. The 3 of them had went to school together. However, tuomas and Emppu had been away in the military. During that time Tarja had went to school to study Classical singing. That's why her style is more like an opera or classical singer than a rock singer. Anyway, tuomas initial idea was folk music. Anyway, they asked Tarja and she agreed. However, they didn't know how her voice and style had changed as a result of her training. When they started working together on the project they were surprised and amazed. That's when their plans changed and they decided to go in a direction that would be a unique combination of Classical and Opera style vocals combined with metal style music. This was the unique style that defined the original Nightwish and made them different and special. The modern day nightwish is not a bad band, and I have nothing against Floor, nor Anette (the 2hd singer). However, the new nightwish is really nothing like the original and that concept was inspired and born as a result or Tarja, her voice, her classical training, and her style. Yes, she doesn't behave on stage the same way as Floor, but that's by design. Notice her style of dress, and the way she carries herself on stage. Also notice her heavily classical and operatic style use of head voice and Bel canto with lots of resonance and vibrato. All of this is part of what made Nightwish unique and special. The original Nightwish was NOT a heavy metal band. They were a blend of classical, operatic vocals with metal style music. And they started a whole new genre that became known as symphonic metal. The new nightwish is definitely more rock and metal, but it's also a lot less unique and not that much different that some other bands. And if it hadn't been for Tarja, they never would have went in that direction in the first place because tuomas original intent was a folk music project. Again listen to their early albums and watch the wishes to eternity DVD, to see the original nightwish. Then perhaps you'll understand. As for what caused the break up, listen to those lyrics I mentioned above. Everything was good until Tarja met a man she fell in love with and married. Then the crap hit the fan. Jugde for yourself whether Tarja was really to blame or whether the green eyed monster of jealousy reared it's ugly head.

And the nickname "operatic metal" too is used of symphonic metal, and that's because of Tarja. She was also an inspiration to other symphonic metal female vocalists to take classical training. Floor is one of those, but she in the end didn't like the way classical vocals are done.

Indeed. Songs from the first albums are about love desire (i wish I had an Angel), later the songs are about lost, suffering and desire to die (Nemo), after expelling Tarja came the rage, which is part of a mourning process (Bye Bye Beautiful), then the regret and shame of how he had handled everything (The Poet and The Pendulum). She married another man, certainly. Not sure if he ever had a chance but IMMO, if that day she was attacked on the stage, he had been the one to jump over his pianos and take the guy out the scenario by storm just before going back to confort her...perhaps he would had changed his history.

Yep, this one was the original singer Tarja. In the early days the music of Nightwish was also different; they evolved from goth rock to power metal, then came the cinematic stuff and finally actual orchestral elements. All of that made pretty unique combination with Tarja's voice. They made 5 albums with Tarja, and 2 with Anette. Very different sounds and vocalists, so naturally it has been kind of a rollercoaster to old fans lol. To me all that variation it's just a good thing, can't really blame them to be repetetive and doing same stuff all over again. And yeah, this one was indeed cover version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical. Cheers and thank you again!

And I don't agree she didn't have a good presence stage or chemestry with the band. I've been a fan since 2003/4 - Tarja was amazing as a frontwoman for Nightwish, her voice with their musical talent led the way for this kind of operatic/symphonic metal and inspired other bands that followed. Even Floor drew inspiration from Nightwish in the early days and Floor and Tarja remain friends today! When Tarja left it was so uncertain about the future of Nightwish since her sound is so distinct. She has some amazing songs like Slaying the Dreamer (End of an Era), Gethsemane and I've always been partial to her version of Sleeping Sun, but Floor is just such a versatile Powerhouse which with such a loving demeanor....It's hard to not be smitten with Floor especially having big shoes to fill! 💞 You are ready for the Poet and the Pendulum- live at wembley - yes the one with lyrics on. The backstory basically is that Toumas felt such guilt over the firing of Tarja and didnt know the certainty of the future of everything. His depression left him feeling so low and so in the song he lyrically commits suicide so he doesnt have to do it in real life. Even today the song is hard for him to perform as you can tell in the live version, when his band mates come to support him and when he sings along to the lyrics at the end. Its split into sections including when he gets home from the End of an Era tour , to the lows of his depression thoughts and when he finally goes home to his Mother and Father who help him recover with what they say. You've been on a great Nightwish Journey but theres still much more amazing stuff yet to see 🤘 rock on!

Every one has told you about the order of the singers. You have the basic info about the split with Tarja. The only thing is it was the whole band that wanted her gone. They all signed the letter, but Tuomas took the brunt of the criticism. Even the Prime Minister of Finland jumped in and wanted them to get back together. One big thing is she was refusing to come to the US again because they did not make a lot of money and the concerts were in smaller venues. Great reaction as usual. Thanks guys........ :-)

That's not exactly precise. The band simply backed Tuomas. He was the soul of the band, he was making the songs and the lyrics. They were High School friends. Tarja was also an acquaintance from High School. In the middle of the backlash from the fans some member expressed he wasn't agree about expelling Tarja but they had to stick together for the best of the band. At that moment many fans thought they were dead as a band. About the US tour, Tarja was committed to touring, as she explained over and over again when all this exploded. She had nevertheless asked to delay the start of the tour by a couple of months because she had committed to other personal projects, as it is known she wanted to pursue other musical interests beyond Metal.

If you get the urge it might be good to check out early Nightwish Beauty of the Beast is in my opinion Tarja's best Nightwish song, I know Sleeping Sun, Deadboys Poem, Creek Marys Blood and Higher than Hope and so many others are all right up there too. Also Beauty and the Beast (my first Nightwish experience) will give you an idea why Tuomas does not sing. it is still one of my favorite Nightwish songs just would like the male vocals be done by Marco and yes I know he came later. I also think the End of an Era DVD is right up there with the Wacken 2013, Tampere and Wembley shows too. I was a Tarja fan and was one of those who thought NW was doomed after she got the boot and I do understand the reasons behind the dismissal. B & S are correct in the need for cohesiveness in a band. Remember that Tarja had already announced she was going out on her own. Oh yeah she had granted NW a final album what a fiasco that would have been (a farewell tour). I too thought Annette was adequate t least in studio and do not forget that 2 incredible albums came during her era that would not have happened if Tarja had not gotten the boot. No Master, Passion Greed, No Bye bye beautiful and of course no Poet and the pendulum. NW has evolved over the last 20 years that I have been listening and Floor is the perfect fit for the music of their entire history.

Annette has a great voice, she is great Singer, but Nightwish was not her style, after Tarja expectations was bigger than she could pull off. Floor is definetly more Nightwish Style and presence they need, awesome Girl, but all the expectations of vocals in Nightwish was put by Tarja, so even if im new fan of the band, Tarja is No 1, Floor is 2nd Annette is 3rd.

Great reaction guys. TARJA is the first singer and she was a friend with TUOMAS from when they go to school. And when TUOMAS started the band TARJA was asked to join. But as you guys said she after some time she became more and more distant to the group. And it became a problem within the group and TUOMAS had to make a choise keep or cut her from the band, and he did the first. But TARJA was so popular with the fans so he get so much hate and comments from some fans. He gott really depressed and was thinking about suicide. Instead he wrote POET AND THE PENDLEUM. It was a way for him to get back to life again. So this song has a really strong background.

The thing that's missing though is that tuomas was also in love with tarja and that mixed in with her distancing made the situation volatile. But also know that tuomas and tarja were bffs since they where practically teen (not literal) but then they become musical partners and his creative control, let's say, was driven more from his own needs rather than also including tarja. So overall, the situation was not great to begin with and tarja wanted different things so its shitty of tuomas to have fired her in such a public way, but they all became better afterwards.

Believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera was Tarja's last performance before the band had to let her go. The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all good friends and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Some credit her being influenced by her businessman husband Marcelo Cabuli, who was incidentally overheard on numerous occasions making statements that "Tarja was the face of Nightwish" and that she "could do much better without the band". Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette and she was with them for a time until she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer. The song The Poet and The Pendulum, which was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. Tuoman's written suicide, instead of the actual act. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful. IF you haven't seen it, you really need to. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZaim6mcqryom9o.html

Maybe you guys could have done a little research on the original song first. You might have realized that Tarja's stage presence was just perfect. When reactors, like yourselves, get hit by the "Floor section" of the Nightwish army, this is the song that's usually suggested to be introduced to Tarja. Personally I wouldn't suggest it. Not that it has any flaws or anything but it would be fair to watch her perform on a similar rock /metal level as Floor. Songs like "Slaying the Dreamer" or "Planet Hell" are great examples where Tarja has a stage presence and a performance, more suitable to compare with Floor. Just my opinion. Thanks for the great reaction video

Tarja was the first singer. Basically she got fired because her husband became her manager and that led to her being disconnected from the band and she was gonna go solo but Tuomas fired her before they made the album Dark Passion Play. They hired Annette as their second vocalist and did two albums with her. She was more poppy and struggled to sing the older songs live although in the studio she sounded good. They fired her because she was not a good fit. Then they finally struck gold and got Floor whom Tuomas had wanted for a while. So during the 2012 tour which started out with Annette still in the band , they brought Floor on after they fired Annette about half way through the tour as a guest vocalist to finish the tour. They decided to make Floor a permanent member after the tour and made the Endless Forms Most Beautiful album with her... But yeah to your point earlier, Floor is more dynamic and versital than Tarja and her presence on stage is much better. Plus the band has much better chemistry with Floor than any other singer. Their new album is gonna be great!

The thing with Tarja was that, she married and had children, and her priorities shifted, and because it was the first time it happened, it caused a rift, and she leaned more on her husband than tried to understand or be understood, and her husband is actually the person fins blamed the most for the break up, calling him a greedy bastard. We don't know what exactly happened from all sides, but Marco wrote in his book about how tarja didn't fly with them, didn't enjoy long tours, wanted to cancel concerts that had been agreed on, perhaps because they didn't pay so much, perhaps for other reasons. Her husband also thought that as the Voice of Nightwish, she should earn more than others and that was a sound NO. The fans turned the whole thing into a spectacle and blamed Tuomas for firing her because he was in love with her and she married her husband (not kidding, this was in newspapers) but she had been married for years. That was Not the reason. She also said she would leave anyway in a few years, so they decided she would leave now. Marco wrote that he gave Tuomas the ultimatum of either Tarja goes or He goes. We know what happened. I don't want people to hate on any of them. It was a case of not communicating, as was Anette's case later. The men have learned from their mistakes and Marco wrote that they keep communicating more now, which spells good for future. Some people say Anette was fired because she got pregnant. That wasn't it. Floor was pregnant during the filming of Poet and the Pendulum at Wembley. It's entirely an attitude thing.

Hello and thanks for this nice video. Just my 2 cents: Tarja had more classical vocal training as a lyric soprano but she has been trying to expand her skills by making use of her chest and speaking registers a lot more when she went solo (probably the reason why she sounds 'bland' as you've mentioned because she mainly used one type of singing while in NW - because that's what Toumas had envisioned the 'NW sound' to be which is symphonic metal). Also, I guess she gained more creative freedom as a solo artist - she was able to collaborate with a lot of other musicians like Chad Smith, Alissa White-Gluz, Joe Satriani, Within Temptation, Cristina Scabbia, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, etc. (whereas in NW, Toumas basically controls everything and do very limited collabs with other artists in order to keep that NW vibe I guess). Floor is a versatile hard rock/metal singer but she also can do some classical voice (she also studied about it but not as extensive as Tarja's). That's why honestly, I prefer listening to Floor during her days in her old bands After Forever and ReVamp because I like her powerful 'rock sound' more than her classical sound. In some interviews, Floor said that she can do classical/operatic voice but if a professional opera singer will listen to her, he/she will notice a difference with her technique; plus, she had said before she prefers doing rock/heavy metal more than classical. Cheers!

I'm an old Nightwish fan. I loved them thanks to the very, peculiar, presence of Tarja as opera lead singer, mixed in the powerful metal-epic of the band... ... I felt, sadly, cold when then Annette appears: she is a good singer, but felt too "pop-ish" to take the role. Then Floor. That mix rock, opera and presence on stage. I put her and Tarja almost on the same level, but... well... undubtely Tarja is in the genes of the band, but Floor brought the full spectrum of possibilities that were needed after Tarja substitutions. My (Nigh)wish is to see BOTH Tarja and Floor together, in a dual-female leading formation.

Good grief. Tarja helped create Nightwish and in many ways her vital contributions to the brilliant arrangements of Tuomas & Emppu have not been eclipsed as it was the Tarja era that defined and grew them to global success. Floor, the 3rd female lead singer is incredible and brought new dimensions to the vocal stylings of Nightwish that are sensational. Annett, the female lead between Tarja and Floor, had a voice many consider more suited to pop-rock than that of the Nightwish catalog. It’s certainly understandable to have personal favorites, but it is a disservice to cast aside the original vocal impact of Tarja, the years and the albums she contributed to Nightwish history. As the title of the DVD indicates it was the “end of an era.” Some will favor its sound, others will favor Anette’s or Floor’s - its all Nightwish though and the arrangements and musicianship will be a constant. The music and its quality will endure.

She kinda makes the band whole in a way. Tuomas seems to agree since he said in an interview that if Floor ever leaves he will end the band. Something he never said about the previous two... Floor can sing anything Tuomas puts before her. Before he had to compose for the singer and there were songs Tarja and Anette were not comfortable singing live. Not going to be a problem with Floor.

Tuomas (keyboardist), Emppu (guitarist), Tarja(so not the 2nd singer) started the band. Beard guy came later. As Nightwish became popular, Tarja became the face of the band and the "star". That fame probably got into her head, which lead to them kicking her out. She is still extremely highly regarded as a singer. A lot of fans regarded the band as "dead" after the breakup, but when Floor came (3rd singer) in who was already known and famous resurrected it. As Floor can sing operatic vocals of Tarja and rock vocals of Anette, while not imitating either one, and making the songs her own. While there is Nightwish civil war between Tarja fans and Floor fans, Floor and Tarja are friends. Worst victim was Anette, who got insane amount of hate from Nightwish fans, even though she made the best Nightwish album

I love Floor but Nightwish is like this and sounds so especial because Tarja sings like opera.

Tarja (1st singer), Anette (2nd Singer), then Floor. All great singers.

This is the Broadway cover. Don't worry, there's a bunch of Floor videos coming. She is in a Dutch tv show where a group of singers sing each other's songs. 1st episode was this past weekend, featuring their big Broadway star (old guy). Great reaction as always. Tarja was the first singer for NightWish. This was the last concert she did with NightWish. Be sure to read the back story behind The Poet and The Pendulum. It will give the song more feeling and what Tuomas was feeling when he wrote the song.

First singer. You can like both, even all three ;). Tarja and Floor are both good. Tarja is big part of band’s history... Ahhh Floor is just awesome

It's strange to me how much people never heard about such classic as Phantom of the Opera, don't mean to underestimate anyone, it is just a bit strange to me. And my opinion about Tarja(1st singer), and later Annete(2nd singer), 'problem' with them is that they never have been in to METAL that much, and Floor is obviously a metal head. Although, Nightwish will never be same without Tarja. Just my opinion!

try nightwish - the siren live, also with tarja since this is a cover song it doesn't showcase the true feel of the tarja era songs other good songs are; dead boy's poem (both tarja and floor live versions are available), ghost love score (end of an era, with tarja) and high hopes (end of an era, an amazing pink floyd cover sung by marco :) )

And what silly coments about Tarja not having Floor's stage charisma. They both have it in spades. Tarja's MO (maybe just nature) was to dress like a killer queen, her drop dead gorgeous self in sufficiently revealing dresses, then act like a tomboy and get the crowd to riot. Try find some older footage. Or just see Sleeping Sun from this same End Of An Era DVD, although she's much calmer in her thirties :P

I didn't look like anyone said but yes this song is originally from the Phantom of the Opera Musical I think this song in particular showcases Traja's vocals the best with this band but it would be awesome if you guys could check out any of her solo work.
