Hello Dave and Chris [ Pardon My Reaction ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). @@gabriel_bardac Yes a small sample meaning she can or will concentrate on solo career... I think with Covid and Marko leaving and the tremendous run they had, it became apparent that to continue in the form they had been at, in their peak, a break was needed to see if all the parts could come back together for another ride. Many groups have a Bell Curve career, where the peak is in the middle. You never want to quit when you are at the bottom of the other end of the curve. They will decide in a couple of years if they can keep the standard as high as it has always been. I think you are right. Tuomas is not done with his creativity at all and the good news from this video clip is that Floor is as ready as anyone to continue. WE CAN'T EVER LOOSE HER!!! @@ahuggie : Yeah, that is true, and I wonder myself sometimes how Tuomas chooses what goes on the setlist, because very much, after more that 20 years, Nightwish has a very large catalogue, and a singer who can sing every single bit of it. So good, in fact, Floor, has, in fact, once sung the phonebook. Lol

You are right - nobody followed them. This was nr 13 of their 15 song Playlist - and they closed the Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. The band before was Alice Cooper - but no one remembers - Nightwish are that powerful!! And seeing Nightwish live is in a category where you have to use the Richter scale to measure the impact they have on your spine and soul - not kidding. And the goosebumps you had - the official word is 'Floorgasm' - still not kidding you - and you have to get used to it, while it's a common phenomenon in most Nightwish songs with Floor as lead. 1 month ago I had no idea who Floor Jansen or Nightwish even were. Stumbled upon them completely by accident from a youtube recommendation. It is absolutely crazy just how expanded my world has become in terms of music. I listened to some heavier stuff in the early-mid 2000's, like your Disturbed or System of a Down -whatever was getting radio play at the time, but metal (especially symphonic metal) has been so off my radar for years I can't believe there's been a group like this putting out performances like this the whole time.

Floor stands just a tad under 6-2 in bare feet, and she's wearing 5 inch heels here.....she is the Valkyrie Goddess.....Tuomas Holopinen is the keyboardist, co-founder, leader, guru, composer, lyricist, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music.....he's the "Metal Mozart".....audience was an intimate little gathering of 82,000......the entire show is on DVD, and KZread, titled :Showtime, Storytime"......this wasn't even the show ender.....sorry, guys, Floor can sing Amy Lee under the table.....there are more metal bands out there; Epica, Jinjer, Sabaton, Kamelot, Amaranthe, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Imperial Age, Orion's Reign, Ayreon, Wintersun, Unleash the Archers, Suite Clarity, Lords of the Trident, Liliac.....Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA

Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bullwhip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. "How do you follow that?" With "Song of Myself" and "Last Ride of the Day". Nightwish fan and new subscriber here. I'm glad ya'll enjoyed listening to Nightwish. I'm looking forward to following you on your journey as you continue to explore this amazing band. Sorry I don't know ya'lls names but the one guy said that they had a very operatic sound. He may be familiar with Nightwish's first lead singer Tarja. This video features their 3rd singer Floor.

I always enjoy when eye brows hit the hairline (in this case the cap). Gabriel will give you a list. Just go with it, this is a really rewarding rabbit hole to dive in to.

Wacken is indeed in Europe, northern Germany, near Hamburg. This a good introduction to the band, but they have quite a range of songs and styles, all great and all epic. Wacken is a small village in Schleswig Holstein, Germany, with 3000 inhabitants. But with the start of de biggest Metal festival in the World, the Wacken Open Air, between 75.000 and 85.000people from all over the world live together peacefully. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

That was the 13th song out of 15, Floor had been singing, headbanging & windmilling for an hour and 10 minutes before that, and two after it. Every song at that concert is great. I listen to the whole concert usually every week. Floor can sing any kind of music and usually does. Marko the bassist sings, and so does Troy. Keep on the Nightwish bandwagon you can't go wrong.

BTW Nightwish headlined this festival. No one followed them. But Alice Cooper played before them. the band he was referring to was Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Listen to Gabriel og follow his list. You have not even seen the top of the iceberg yet. Nightwish is AWESOME and one of the best ever out there. You may have listened to Nightwish with one of their previous vocalists. Floor is the latest one who combines the rock-pop qualities of Anette and the operatic qualities of Tarja into one perfect package, so I think it's a good idea to listen to the live versions of Nightwish songs with Floor doing the vocals. If you want to listen to studio songs with Floor, the most recent Nightwish album is great.

Nightwish was the headliner of Wacken 2013 and they closed the festival that year. Take a Look at „Last Ride Of The Day“, the last song of that festival, the energy is off the charts and everyone is pumped up with positiv energy after that song. Just want to point out , that it has been said, that every Nightwish song is different from each other, so it is not only Operatic/Classical music. Like also out of their repertoire following songs are more traditional metal with NW spice on them: “Romanticide”, “Yours Is an Empty Hope”, “Song of Myself” (the latter Half of the Song) and “Master Passion Greed” which is their most heavy and hard song, some say it is like Pantera with a twist - you should listen to these to understand the Bands versatility and ability to play any type of Metal they want to.. AND of course a Wacken 2013 Live version if only possible, for that show is the gem..

She sings songs written for two former singers and Tuomas (the keybord and master) always challenge the singers with the songs. Floor was told before this show that she was a member of the band, but Nightwish officially announced it in October 2013.

Info dump for you below!😁 For a taste of the polar opposite of what Nightwish has to offer I would suggest "Yours is an Empty Hope" from live from Mexico City or Wembley 2015 next! Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best and most versatile female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a classically trained soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6+). Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today. The vocalists are/were - Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals. Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals. Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera. The other band members are/were - Tuomas Holopainen - Song writer/composer and Keyboards. (Finland) Marko Hietala - Bassist and vocals. (Finland) 2001 - 2021 Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist (Finland) Jukka Nevalainen - Drums (Finland) Retired in 2014 due to health issues Troy Donockley - Multi-instrumentalist and Vocals. (United Kingdom) Kai Hahto - Drums (Finland) - 2014 to Present Jukka Koskinen - Bassist (Finland) 2022 to Present Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) and a recently launched solo career that she has been involved that are all pretty amazing as well, she is also an accomplished song writer herself. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on KZread where she has posted covers of songs as well as her solo stuff. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. They are hugely popular across in most of the world but for some reason still not as well known in the US. The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is EXTREMELY varied. The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set. Nighwish are almost always better experienced with LIVE versions of their songs if at all possible. Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb. Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Storytime, Ever Dream, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken). Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance. Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version. Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way. Prepare for the Nightwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!🤘😎

This is Nightwish's more feel good/romantic song, but they have whole spectrum and every song is different... Ghost Love Score is great song which showcase a lot of the band's capabilities in 10 minutes, but still it's like 50-60% of what they can deliver. They are really amazing band.
