Myself, I tend to let the experts handle things cause I am not one and you can’t see everything that is going on when you are outside it. media focuses on what will get them the most clicks while still covering the news, so never think there is not a slant to it. Here, you lazy person Steve. i did the 2 seconds of work it takes to answer. Be more curious in your life! I hope the following isn't too confusing for you to understand. "Siren, noisemaking device producing a piercing sound of definite pitch. Used as a warning signal, it was invented in the late 18th century by the Scottish natural philosopher John Robison. The name was given it by the French engineer Charles Cagniard de La Tour, who devised an acoustical instrument of the type in 1819. A disk with evenly spaced holes around its edge is rotated at high speed, interrupting at regular intervals a jet of air directed at the holes. The resulting regular pulsations cause a sound wave in the surrounding air. The siren is thus classified as a free aerophone. The sound-wave frequency of its pitch equals the number of air puffs (or holes times number of revolutions) per second. The strident sound results from the high number of overtones (harmonics) present."

...you should see what we have to put up with up north in Portland with the PPB. There is zero traffic enforcement here which has cause an uptick in pedestrian deaths as it's a free for all on the city streets. A day doesn't go by whne I see people driving stupidly, running stop signs and red lights, driving aggressively, speeding, and even making turns out of hte wrong lane. It was all politically motivated which is endangering the citizens here. response to break ins and other rimes is very slow. in one case a house that was shot at a number of times and it took officers over 14 hours to respond. It is basically a "quiet quitting" in disguise. The small grocery across the street has been repeatedly broken into. One night I heard noise and I actually got good pictures of the perp leaving with merchandise (I live in a fairly decent neighbourhood where one wouldn't expect such happenings). When the police finally arrived, I showed them the images and asked where should i send them and they just brushed me off. The owner of the storm has since put up steel reinforcement protections on the windows and front door out of his own pocket. So far , no incidents but it shouldn't have to come to that.. The PPB needs to take some steel wool to the doors on their cruisers and rub out the motto "Serve to protect. protect to serve" because they do neither.

Wildfires big enough to threaten the community are not, or at least haven't been in the past. So why would you have an alarm for them? We as the entire human race need to take stock of what new threats the changing climate is bringing and start planning for them - something that we should have been doing for years, even decades. I mean, it's not like no one has told us over and over again that all of these climate-related disasters were going to happen.

My heart goes out to the survivors of this disaster! One of the most common issues with emergency sirens is that the audible alarms are perceived as alarms for the same form of emergency, such as tornados, floods, and tsunamis. In most areas, there are no specific alarms for these kinds of massive fires. In my New England community, such alarms mean a local fire, alerting volunteer fire departments (e.g., "a 3-alarm fire", calling into action 3 or more fire departments to a local fire). IMHO, we need multiple alarms, one unique form or tone of alarm for specific emergencies, so that when you hear it, you know exactly what form of emergency it is.

Now you see, this right here is what's wrong right now. We've had all kinds of warnings about exactly this situation, for YEARS. But we hide our heads in the sand and pretend that all this fuss about climate change is either worry about something so far in the future that it won't affect us in the here-and-now, or worse, that's it's flat out fake. Either way, communities across the planet need to stop dithering about what's causing it and take pro-active steps to ready themselves for situations just like this one, because whatever the cause, IT'S HAPPENING NOW.
