Nightjet ÖBB Train Review | 15 hours in SEATING carriage

I think, it's wonderful that they revive this kind of compartments und seats! They were exactly the same in the eighties and nineties (even in the ordinary intercity trains) and I remember traveling overnight from Vienna to Rome, Rijeka, Florence etc. in them. Sometimes, ww were six young people lying and sleepin in a compartment 😂

Sadly... they ABOLISHED those for the "new" version of the Nightjet.... - And of course. For night travel those had only been reasonably comfortable with < 4 passengers in the compartment. But at BUSY times this cannot be guaranteed. I also travelled in the 80s in "normal" 6-seater compartments from e.g. Rome to Vienna, BUT it was a nightmare (however, back then I did not have enough money to afford anything better.

I went by Nightjet from Wien to Rome in a compartment in May. The train was absolutely packed. Like it probably almost always is. So it was 17 hours in a compartment with 5 other people. It was very uncomfortable. I regretted that I didn't pay more for couchette.

I love taking the train and I know those train carriages, they're fine to travel in during the day, but can't imagine getting a lot of sleep if any, if 6 people are in them. I'm happy that the new trains are phasing out these coupe carriages in favor of carriages with rows of seats. When you're tall, the coupes are awkward to stretch your legs and the table options for your notebook are not that great.

The long stops in Bohumin and Breclav are because they are connecting other cars from other trains to this train. Because they can serve multiple destinations with that system. In german it´s "Kurswagen". This is also why most ÖBB Nightjets go for these unusual routes. In Bohumin the train Warsaw-Graz gets vonnected and in Breclav they decouple the train which goes to Budapest. Also these nighttains often use mixed cars from multiple train operators. Here you have ÖBB cars, PKP cars and MAV cars which are connected at different routes. When the new Nightjets come from September 2023 (planned time-scedule) this will basically be an ÖBB Railjet but as a nighttrain. Fantastic. First routes will be to Italy. These trains will be of 7 units + locomotive and can also be put together to form 2 trains with 410m lenght. The new Nightjets are fixed units, they can not decouple any cars. So the nearly two hour stops at Salzburg will be eliminated. I hope that they will then reduce the travel time between Vienna and Rome to around 10-11 hours instead of 15, because there will be no need to wait for other trains anymore. Because 15 hours suck. If nighttrains really want to compete with inter-european flights, they must be a lot faster than now. Travel time MUST be equal to daiy-time EuroCity trains, which also exist and are a good choice of travel.

Interesting to see the night train from the coach/sitting perspective. I've taken the same train, but in the sleeping carriage in my own compartment; rather expensive though, especially when you're traveling alone.

I wish they came up with affordable options that would be a bit more comfortable. The couchette and sleeper cars are way too expensive for most of the passengers.

  • @kaarethor

@@WhatashameMaryJane I agree that cheaper sleeping accommodations are needed. You can save a bit by booking early, but it's still expensive. The best option currently is travelling with others and share the cost of a couchette or sleeper cabin. (I just can't make myself share with people I don't know.) It will be interesting to see the pricing in ÖBB's new rolling stock. Over Easter, I travelled to and from Tuscany by train, about 20 hours each way, and yet it feels like less of a hazzle to me than flying the same distance in a couple of hours.

HI! I make a lot of train trips for work or other purposes, very often I take intercity trains, especially the night ones. I always try to opt for seats since the least expensive and not having sleeping problems I can sleep comfortably even in a seat. If someone is with you in your compartment don't worry in the 90's the best trips I've done were with random people lot of memories. Afterall imo is better to travel with other people even if strangers than alone. Cheers good vid👍

Nice videos Mary Jane. Thank you for making and sharing them. Personally I like the train. In my mind it's travel in a more human scale or dimension than jet travel. I don't mean human scale in physical size of course, since trains are huge. I've traveled Amtrak NE Corridor many, many times from DC to NYC and points in between on business. The Acela Express, although not express or highspeed by European standard, is nicer and faster than Metroliner service. I've also taken the TrenItalia high speed from Rome to Venice and the other way to Sestri Levante via Milan, and then on down to Rome. They were fine too. In a couple of weeks I'll be on the TrenItalia "Red Arrow" , :) , from Rome to Naples. It's only about an hour and a quarter I think. The local trains along the Ligurian coast were fun too. Just remember to validate your ticket in the box like thing hanging off a wall before you get on! TheyA are serious about that in Italy! I also had a train trip from Geneva to Paris which was nice and very scenic. As nice and good as I think train travel can be, sometimes you just have to hop a jet. No train service from the US to Europe! Thank you again for your wonderful videos and thoughtful perspectives Mary Jane.

I may need a regional train anyway! I don’t know about train prices in europe but in to me this is extremely cheap either way, from Chichester to Brighton the train costs £16.30 (€18.47) for a 30 mile journey. Venice to Udine is about 80 miles!

Coincidentally I have been comparing the Amtrak to this train on your videos. I mentioned I have taken the train to NY but I have also taken the Coast Starlight a few times. The seats that lay flat are very similar in the Amtrak "Roomette". You can lock your cabin from the inside on the Amtrak which I like especially when I'm asleep. The trains that run from Chicago to NY have a bathroom right in the sleeper car which is very convenient but also a little weird. Sadly, Amtrak tickets have gotten even more expensive and from what I've heard the company still operates at a loss. A coach ticket is $75 (Emeryville/Oakland to Portland) A sleeper is $585. It does include meals and showers but you can fly for 1/4 to 1/3 that price.

I can spend few words about this as I take such trains quite frequently. 1) As I have written above, the company is renewing the entire nightjet flee and the new trains should begin their journey at the end of summer 2023. The new trains will have wifi; the cars in which Mary Jane was are quite old and they have no wifi. 2) The ticket of Mary Jane is really cheap. Even if the seats are very comfortable, the journey is exactly like a journey on an Intercity train. The "upgrade" would be the couchette with 6 or 4 cots, which is nowadays my usual choice if I travel by night train, especially if I go to work when I arrive. In this case the journey has (usually) an additional cost of about 20€ or 30€. The advantage is that you can lay down on the cot, so you get sheet, blanket and pillow, and you get breakfast in the morning, and of course tea or coffee without extra costs. The upper classes comprehend the sleeper cabins, which contain 3 up to 1 beds, even with personal bath and shower, if you wish. In this case the price is much higher. Once (unfortunately only once) I got a great offer and I booked a place into a 3-bed sleeper cabin. I slept wonderfully from the moment I decided to sleep. Great experience, in particular looking out of the windows with full moon :)
