Martín Miguel Juan de Mata Güemes Montero de Goyechea y la Corte was an Argentine military man and politician who played an outstanding role in the Argentine War of Independence. For six years he was governor of Salta. With very limited resources, he waged a constant guerrilla war, known as the Gaucho War, stopping six invasions of the Spanish army, thus preserving the rest of the current Argentine territory free of royalist invaders.
