One of the most common photography settings that I receive is what are my camera settings, which camera do you use, and do I use a tripod at night. The answer is, I do not use a tripod because I do not have to. I underexpose my pictures so that the information in the highlights remains. In that way, my photos always retain the information necessary to take awesome night photos.
This is why you do not need a new camera or the latest and greatest gear for night photography. Hope this night photography tutorial will help someone out.

People are obsessed with Aperature/Fstop. What they fail to understand: landscape or cityscape; you aren't shooting at 1.2/1.4 anyway because you don't want a narrow depth of field, or everything will be blurry. Usually it's like f4+ unless you are doing portraits. If took a picture of a tall building at night, and used f1.4, the first floor will be in focus and the top half of the building will be a blurry mess... It's for subject isolation, nothing more.

  • @Noealz

Right! I tried using my 50mm 1.2 once and it was not fun, I'd miss most shots, it was really slow to focus because of all the glass, and I really missed having the zoom because I could not always reach the subject in time :(

  • @rlclark50

You can get a wide DoF with bright aperture because it also depends on your focal plane to subject distance. Further away for any given aperture will widen DoF; focus to 25+m with f/2 often gets most things quite sharp on 35mm FoV for instance.

I agree, if your taking a picture at night, you shouldnt try making it look like something its not. It will ruin the picture at the cost of making it something it isnt. (If you dont get what i mean is taking the shadows away makes it look more like a cloudy day, not night)

Doing the exact same, EV -1 and/or spot metering, so nights look like proper nights, dark alleys look gloomy and no, usually the human eye can't make out the detail in the deepest shadows either, otherwise those alleys would be half as scary when you walk past them and something rustles. I'm still traumatized by night photography reviews on other channels and the abuse of the shadows slider. :)

It’s a similar argument when talking about “golden hour.” You’d think photographers only have a 30 minute window each day to take pictures outside the way they talk about it. If you’re taking someone’s senior prom photos, sure, the light is pretty good. It wasn’t until I started taking photos in harsh light at the worst time of day did I realize most of the “rules” out there are complete bullshit. At best they’re polite suggestions.

great content! admittedly I did just upgrade my camera to the new a7 IV, but I was moving off of the Nikon D3500 that just wasn't meeting my needs all that well (the focus would almost never be sharp where I wanted it etc due to poor low-light capabilities and the crop sensor didn't help) I rarely take my tripod out with me, I have one mostly for the off-chance I was to shoot a light trail or long exposure of the sky. good to know that my new f4 24-105mm lens should still be enough for night photography as I was concerned that f2.8 may have been the sweet spot. I really enjoy seeing the shots you post to Instagram and its quite the inspiration. Unfortunately my location is pretty devoid of lights or interesting signs so have to travel for similar opportunities.

When I went back to take up photography again with a digital camera (I was old school, film) I wanted to take night time photographs using a tripod and long exposure time. That produced a look that I was going for. I also found out that my white balance settings on the camera gave a different glow to the image. When I learned to use the K scale for white balance, I got better color for my image. I have also done some night photography of a protest where long exposure would not work, so I cranked up the ISO and handheld the camera. Looking at the images that you provided look great. I usually don't have a person who would be the subject for my photos but underexposing and bringing up the shadows also creates a distinct look. So it seems that everyone who looks to do night photography will have a different artistic view that they are looking for. Learning how to do different looks in night photography would be a good skill to learn. Thanks for your insight.

I agree with the point on shadows. Photos where blacks are black do look better. Recently I started doing night time street photography and have been making the same mistake of trying to show something in the shadows. Now, I'll follow your example. I use Nikon D5300 with 35 and 50mm f/1.8, but I will be upgrading to D850 soon. So far, I've learned a lot with this DSLR.

Yes yes yes. I do like fast lenses for the faster shutter speeds I can get at night though which helps if using a longer focal length. But I agree there’s way too many armchair photographers that care way too much about gear and less about the art and technique. Love the idea of just always shooting a bit underexposed. I’ve tended to use bracketing at night but I usually throw out the bright shot anyways.
