Why the red light? The idea is to maintain, and use, your natural vision on a night hike. The red light only helps you with your next step even though the photos seem to show a large area illuminated in red. It doesn't look like this when you're doing the hike.
This is the problem with photographing a night hike. We're completely in the dark but you can't see it in a photo!
That said, I encourage my fellow hikers to try a night hike. It feels so different even if you're familiar with the trail. Rangers at Valley of Fire organize these hike regularly and they're really fun.
