Harry Anderson (October 14, 1952 - April 16, 2018) was an American actor, comedian and magician. He is best known for his role of Judge Harry Stone on the 1984-1992 television series Night Court. He later starred in the sitcom Dave's World from 1993 to 1997.
In addition to eight appearances on Saturday Night Live between 1981 and 1985, Anderson had a recurring guest role as con man Harry "The Hat" Gittes on Cheers. He toured extensively as a magician, and did several magic/comedy shows for broadcast, including Harry Anderson's Sideshow (1987). He played Richie Tozier in the 1990 miniseries It, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.
Anderson was born October 14, 1952, in Newport, Rhode Island. He spent much of his youth performing magic on the streets of Chicago, New York, St. Louis and New Orleans before landing in California at the age of 16. After moving to Los Angeles, he joined the Dante Magic Club and worked as a street magician in San Francisco when he was 17. He attended Buena Park High School before graduating from North Hollywood High School in 1970 as class valedictorian. After high school, he attended Fullerton College. From 1971 to 1976, he lived in Ashland, Oregon, performing magic and working with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Anderson's many appearances on Saturday Night Live during the show's seventh, eighth, and ninth seasons, as well as hosting an episode on the show's tenth season, led to his role as Harry "The Hat" Gittes on several seasons of the television sitcom Cheers, and eventually as Judge Harry Stone on the sitcom Night Court. He went on to appear in other television specials and shows, including 12 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
As a magician, Anderson toured extensively and performed in comedy/magic shows for clubs and broadcast, including Harry Anderson's Sideshow in 1987. In 1990, he starred in the television adaptation of Stephen King's It as the adult Richie Tozier. From 1993 to 1997, he starred in the television sitcom Dave's World, based loosely on the life and columns of humorist Dave Barry.
Anderson wrote a book called Games You Can't Lose: A Guide for Suckers, a collection of gags, cons, tricks and scams. First published in 1989 (ISBN 978-1-58080-086-0, 2001 reprint), it also contains a survey of "Games You Can't Win" told from an insider's perspective. He appeared with Criss Angel in a TV special called The Science of Magic, later released on DVD.
In November 2008, Anderson played himself on an episode of 30 Rock, along with fellow former Night Court cast members Markie Post and Charles Robinson.
Anderson was a longtime fan of singer Mel Tormé, and his character Judge Stone on Night Court was also a Tormé fan; the singer appeared on the sitcom six times. Night Court creator Reinhold Weege said that Anderson and his character both being Tormé fans was completely coincidental. Anderson was among those who delivered eulogies at the singer's funeral in 1999.
Anderson was married twice. In 1977 he married Leslie Pollack (b. 1953); they had two children, a daughter, Eva Fay Anderson, and a son, Dashiell Anderson, before divorcing in 1999. In 2000 he married Elizabeth Morgan (b. 1973). In 2006, Anderson and his wife moved from New Orleans to Asheville, North Carolina.
In late January 2018, Anderson had a bout of influenza and subsequently suffered several strokes. On April 16, 2018, he died in his sleep of a stroke due to influenza and heart disease at his home in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 65. Harry Anderson was cremated and has no grave or gravesite fans can visit.

For a lonely kid getting bullied in elementary school, I knew I could always count on having a good laugh with my dad watching Night Court. As an adult, I never thought of Harry as someone who wouldn't be here one day. Hit hard. Rest in peace Harry Anderson, Markie Post and Charles Robinson.

I am of the opinion that Night Court was of a cast that can never be duplicated again, their timing and presence was completely flawless. ❤
What an absolutely beautiful neighborhood. Not a bad place to live out your final days. RIP Harry Anderson... these days 65 isn't that old. He leaves a great legacy.
Nice memories of Night Court. I was not aware that Harry Anderson had passed away, he actually was young. Great guy and awesome character that Judge Stone he played in Night Court.

Im glad.. it looks fairly contained and sorganizedish
Harry was also a *huge* fan of Mel Torme, who, as it turns out, made at least one appearance on Night Court. It feels so weird to have been alive at a time when these shows were airing brand new. For us at that time, it was what it was, just business as usual. Now, over 35 years ago, I look back and it amazes me how much good quality TV viewing we had back then.
My Mom loved Night Court. I remember watching reruns as a kid. I'm sorry to hear that he has passed away.
My most favorite show on TV . I could watch reruns of Night Court forever. In fact, I am now. Harry Anderson was one of a kind. Lovable and wacky .❤
I met him when I was an extra on "Daves World." Nice guy.
I had such a crush on Harry Anderson growing up. Loved him in Night Court and IT! I vaguely remember the other shows/movie you mentioned but I can't remember watching them :( He really did love magic though, I remember him doing a magic show in a train car...on Disney Channel?? Thank you so much for taking us along.
I first saw him on " Cheers " he was fantastic. !!!
I completely forgot about IT. What a great movie. I remember him on Cheers. Night Court was a favorite. Harry seemed so intelligent. The era your speaking of is not familiar to today’s generation. Lovely video
I had been hoping for a long time that you'd cover Harry Anderson at some point. Prior to "Nightcourt", Anderson played a character on "Cheers" called, 'Harry the Hat' that appeared only a few times. This character was the basis for 'Judge Harry Stone'. Thank you, Paul. I mean...thank you, Mark. 🤔 NO! I mean, thank you, Scott! 😁

My introduction to Harry Anderson was watching him perform magic on SNL. I remember seeing his first appearance on the show and then later on I started watching him on "Cheers" and then "Night Court ". I never became a fan of "Dave's World" but I have seen a few episodes. Dave was of the most talented magicians I had ever seen. May he rest in peace.
Hi Scott. Always had a crush on Harry...Sad that he is no longer with us. Night Court was and still is one of my boyfriend and my favorite shows--my boyfriend has the entire collection of Night Court on Blu-ray. I enjoyed this video. Learned some things about Harry that I didn't know before. Thanks for making this video.

I loved watching Night Court as a kid with my dad.
I am astounded that he is not remembered more. I pray he gets a documentary to give him a legend memorial. He deserves it! Always made me laugh! A comedian and magician that to this day surprises many entertainers.

I LOVE WATCHING TV SHOWS NIGHT COURT
I grew up watching the show
Night Court was one of my shows when I was a kid that I would always make sure to watch when it come on. I loved Night Court. I’m trying to stay up with the reboot which seems nice also.
Scott and Ray, thank you for the tour and you both did a phenomenal job of telling the story and tracing the steps of Harry Anderson to each of his homes. He was a great actor and Night Court was a fabulous show during one of the best eras of television. I didn't know about his magical talent so that was really interesting to learn. I LOVE magicians! They are so fascinating, and I dislike when people give their tricks away. That's just wrong and takes away the wonder of it all. What would magic be without the magic? Ashville is a stunningly beautiful area of North Carolina. I drove through there on the way to a family reunion in Waynesville. I fell in love with the area and never wanted to go back to Chicago! So sad how he died, the flu is HORRIBLE, and it comes on so fast!! I ended up with it four years ago and thought I was a goner. Couldn't even take my dog out. Couldn't walk two steps without becoming breathless. My daughter called and I couldn't even answer the phone. She finally called my sister to ask her if she would go to my house and check on me. She has a key, so she let herself in when I didn't answer the door. I told her she needed to leave because I was really sick, but she insisted I go to the ER., so she took me. I had almost 105 fever. That's when I learned it was the flu. It is definitely deadly!! I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and although I recovered, my lungs have never really been the same since. I am so sorry he died like that. What a great video in tribute to a great actor and magician who will always be remembered because of a great big heart like yours Scott. RIP to Harry Anderson 🪄💐
Night court was and till this day is my favorite show I watched it growing up and whenever I get the chance I watch the reruns all because of Harry❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Harry did a fun sitcom called Dave's World. I think it's how bill engvall got famous.
Thanks Scott, for taking us along on this adventure. I loved Night Court, never missed it.
Harry will forever be one of my favorites. This video was so hard for me to watch 💔...but so beautifully & respectfully done, as always. Thanks Scotty. 💋

Beautiful town ! Next time!
I’m a horror enthusiast and my two favorite Harry Anderson roles are in Stephen King’s IT (‘90) and an episode of Tales of the Crypt as a comic book writer for the strip. Saint Harry Anderson Pray for Us. 🙏🏾
Loved Harry. I had the pleasure to see him do stand up and magic in Minneapolis in the late 80s. He was terrific and very, very funny.

Thanks for the great video on Harry ! I always watched Night Court. I don't believe he got the acknowledgment that he deserved.
Thanks Scott for making this video and tribute.
I live in New Orleans. Thank you for remembering Harry. I always felt sorry for him because he had such a rough life. Just when he got things stabilized, he passed away. Wonder how wife his doing?
Thank you, Scott. Great work and information, as always! Probably my favorite sitcom of all time! At least tied with All in the Family, Family Ties, Three’s Company, & Married With Children. I remember Judge Stone dabbling with magic quite a bit on the show as well. It’s nice they were able to incorporate a few of his passions into his character.
