Yup. Whether F1, Prototypes (Group C or IMSA), Grand Prix Bikes (500s, 250s, 125s, all great two stroke stuff), it was truly a Golden Age with many many great drivers and riders, and beautiful looking and sounding cars and bikes having proper races on proper tracks!

I can't speak for Motorsports fans outside of the US but yeah the "Golden Era" here in the states was generally during the 1980s & 90s; only because racing was finally getting the network coverage that it deserves and was long overdue. ESPN was established in 1979 (or possibly earlier depending if you on lived on the East Coast that is). It wasn't much in the beginning but at least they included some F1, CART, IMSA and other forms of motorsports as well. Mostly taped-delayed programs, but it was better than nothing. As good as ESPN was, it still didn't wrap up a weekend's worth of racing since the network hosted other (ball & stick) sports as well. WTBS was a good source since 1981(?) when it launched _'Motorweek Illustrated'_ hosted mostly by Dave Despain, and on occasion by Bob Varsha. It came on every Saturday @1:30pm if I recall correctly. Should have been on Sundays, but back then as a kid I was grateful for anything I could get outside of a _'Road & Track'_ or _'Car & Driver'_ magazine (didn't discover the Brit's _'Motorsport'_ mag until late 1981 at a unconventional bookstore). CBS - to it's credit - in the late 1970s not only got on board with NASCAR, televising the first LIVE coverage of the (1980) Daytona 500, but had Ken Squire & David Hobbs teamed up covering a handful of 1979 F1 races. Notably Dijon, Silverstone, Hockenheim and Watkins Glen as far as I know. That sparse coverage continued until about 1989. By then ESPN was taking over everything - even Monaco. Which leads to.... ABC Wide World of Sports (ABC aka Absolute BS Coverage) was once a decent station for motorsports during the 1960s & 70s, but after Andretti's title in 1978, their coverage became a frustrating experience. Always butchering up the Monaco GP with segments of bowling and high-diving championships of all things. Then at the 1982 Indianapolis 500, some "genius" production manager thought it was a good idea to showcase the wives of Gordon Johncock and Rick Mears during the final laps of that dramatic duel. That "tradition" also carried over into other close races as well, 1989, 1992 and onwards. ABC couldn't even manage to convince the IMS hierarchy to do LIVE coverage of the race until 1986. That all said, with the introduction of onboard cameras being customary in the late 1980s helped motorsports become more appealing to the general public.... Though I have to admit that the FOX network did the best job out of all the networks when in the 1990s they laid claim to the NASCAR series, and went full-throttle with their marketing campaign. Their advertising and production of races boosted the series so much with ratings that I knew people who got caught all up in the hype - whereas before they could not have cared less for motorsports, much less anything that required a sparkplug. Anyways, as someone mentioned here earlier, it was better times then. At least for gearheads like us.

Four F1 World Champions in the field, Andretti, Fittipaldi, Piquet and Mansell. Such a shame more F1 World Champions don't try the 500 after finishing in F1.

The Red 5, priceless to see. Nigel is for me one of the most complete and successful racers! Great documentary and insights for this marvel of a race!

Excellent programme. Had me on the edge of my seat as I had forgotten the result! LOL Got to say though, the sound of those engines at full whack from the side of the track wast just beautiful. There is no better sound than that of a racing engine at full throttle

What a nice summary speech, Mansell is a true sportsman. It is great to see those good ol' days racing events (also f1, motogp sbk or rally of that '90s era...) it was a much better time for living.

Was very disappointed he did not win. I am a penske guy but was a Nigel fan in F1. I really wanted him to get this. However, look at those stands. This is when that race was the top racing event of the year. Half a million people if you include the infield.

Excellent doc. Mansell was a great driver. So calm and calculated.

Seeing GREAT Mansell World F1 Champion, talking about himself and how happy was to pass the rookie phase is laughable. The only one that can be compared to him was also GREAT Senna. (in my humble and fan opinion)

I loved Mansell

I think Nigel proved more of his worth as a racer coming to Indycar. He ran well on the road courses which was expected. But he adapted to ovals quickly and ran very well on them.

Nigel was one of the best

It wasn't until the late 90's/early 00's that f1 pulled away from CART.We can or hate Tony George for that with the IRL.I think he was smart for doing it in hindsight-couldn't have two premier open wheel leagues in the world-but hated him then,lol

well I remember an interview on tv where he was sitting down I think in a cafe or outside with the host on a show and they were talking, in 1994 ish, seemed nice enough when talking, but I always thought he had the biggest eyebrows on record I have ever seen, I thought he would race indy for longer then he did, but indy is indy its faster then f1, and the cars are larger, it might be just an oval but its not an ordinary oval it has a square shape and less banking then some of the super speedways, but I heard it called by someone in comments or in the documentry about the history of the brickyard the indy motor speedway that it was really the worlds first superspeedway, and when they did the challenge the first time in 1911 it was unlike anything that had been done, a track that big, and that distance in a very cowboy day and age. as for me I want to the other big track in indy the big oval at indy raceway park where they had two development classes of indycars midgets, and the modern version of the old long cowl dirt roadsters the silver crown usac cars which are basicly indycars from the last age of the roadsters, and they still fly very quickly around the oval there with those long sweeping turns watching from the pits gives you a new perspective, and they put out more power currently then modern indy cars at 800 ish hp, very loud and gutteral sounding, it gives you a taste of indy though as the silvercrowns are rolled to the end of the pits and a command gentlemen start your engines is given and they are wound up with those large hand starters to turn them over just like the modern champ cars, and they run a parade lap and off they go for 100 laps flying around like on a rail even faster then what the nascar series cars can, very dangerous can they be though as they could flip and carry lots of fuel at 75 gallons full load, though the drivers I was cheering on all had mechanical problems, ryan newman, justin grant, and derick beasic the last of whom is from my neck of the woods in north indiana, I did witness though history as taylor ferns was the highest placing lady in a usac race all time at 3rd place and saw bobby santos 3 win a double feature in the crowns and the usac midgets a feat that dont happen all the time. and the f 2000's I learned run a twin turbo honda engine that sound like a growling dog when it idles heh. sarry the long discourse, it was a fun night dispite the rain and colder weather, I did get to see close up racing and talk with several of the drivers, it left me a little starstruck, I mean eric gorden and ryan newman are big guns in racing long time vets of the dirt and pavement, and got to see the fairsized block that powers a silvercrown car and learned why they have teh flatter front vs the rounded nose of the old roadsters they are supposed to be the next iteneration of, and that was that the material is so thin it would be harder to make look well and the slight shape gives it a bit more downforce which you need all you can get especially when they run the dirt versions, which I had wondered but no one could really answer till one of the team owners or crew chiefs explained it to me. and talked at length with buddy kofoid and taylor ferns for several minutes while the track was being dried with the buffolo air dryers, the track safty vehicles and the street sweeper which was the first time I saw them use a vacuum sweeper to help dry I might have saw it in nascar but never remebered it, but it gave me a small giggle to see it running the bottom vacuming along just the vac running not the brooms. but indy is indy there is no other track like it in the world, and for those of you that might not have caught it in 2022 they had a huge crowd and the snake pit was back and had over 300000 people in attendance well past what the main stands hold at 260 thousand which is still the largest stadium in the world currently. it surprised me athony joeseph foyt cried a little when he decided to hang it up and retire, that guy was and is tough as nails and one of the greatest racers of all time and ran not just indy but 24 hour races dirt roadsters as it was part of the champ car trail back then, and nascar more then once, they say he has a temper and is no one to mess with.

@@manga12 Nice discourse! AJ Foyt is the GOAT and the Dirt Camp Cars have ALWAYS been my favorite form/class of racing. Kody Swanson is a modern day Silver Crown driver that reminds me so much of those great gladiators from the 1960's USAC Championship Trail days running on State Fairgrounds Horse Racing Mile Tracks. The real "Golden Age" of IndyCar racing. Iron men in wooden ships! PS; I really love the fact that you're so passionate about IndyCars, the IMS and the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," THE Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. I have been a huge fan of the "500" since 1961 which just happens to be AJ's first of four victories at Mr. Tony Hulman's World Famous Speedway!

@@timford3599 yea I wish we had more then two left of the big dirt, I mean there are horse tracks, and all it would take is working out a deal and putting up some railing and a catch fence, or at least in Indiana, or build one though would take up a good chunk of space to make a dirt mile or half that silver crowns could race on, or around indy raceway park they said they would like to host a dirt race but prob a small temp 1/4 mile in the infield in the next 10 years as part of the improvements to the facilities for midgets, not planning on doing a Bristol, though maybe they will change their minds and put a layer around the whole thing, imagine a silvercrown race around that though it would cover part of the walls but long dirt track racing in central Indiana again ahh I would love that, dont suppose the track of champions is ever coming back putting down crushed limestone, like they did, maybe it will go back to regular dirt one day who knows the future is not set in stone, or a bigger track at the brickyard then the bc39 that could have sprints and crowns and flat track bikes race on it, though they run a tight schedule on their season. though in interview the official from the brickyard says we arn't here to take from the local tracks with regular racing at the 1/4 mile there and there are several around that area like circle city, speeddrome, and irp, and the potential Hoosier downs in Shelbyville just outside indy its a dirt mile, though they said to me when I asked via instegram, sounds cool but we dont have the safety barriers in place to do that sorry. though I am sure a temporary wall, and catch fence could fix that, after all nascar ran at the la coliseum though they have more big money then usac to work with and equipping a 1/4 mile is smaller then a mile I suppose but stranger things have happened, though its the dirt races that get the most audience historically.

Luck almost always plays its fickle hand in the last 20 laps of Indy, this time in the form of Lyn St James' gearbox failing causing a yellow. If that doesn't happen and the race stays green, nobody was catching Red 5. And as Bobby Unser and Sam Posey mentioned, he didn't even check up after the yellow restart his whack into the wall caused, when it went green he just buried his foot in it. Especially given his very recent first hand knowledge (and a back and insides full of well over 100 surgical staples) of what a hit into the wall can do at 200+ mph, that's almost supernatural courage and will to win. If you haven't seen them, watch his '93 oval track wins at Milwaukee, the Michigan 500 (an even more grueling, faster race than Indy and he had the flu to boot) New England (a fabulous battle w Paul Tracy that he won with only three laps to go) and Nazareth (where he clinches the series title) they are just masterful from a guy in his first ever oval races. It's impossible to state how difficult that is, and doubt there is another driver in history that could've pulled it off. Too bad '94 was a big let down (with idiot driver Dennis Vittolo almost decapitating him at Indy) and he went back to F1, which given how it turned out looks like a mistake. But his '93 Indy Car season will forever stand as one of the best ever, in any series by any driver. And a great guy as well. Legend.

Le mans 24hr is the greatest race.

Mansell should have won but instead the cheating emmo did What really pisses me off is those pesky Penske cars kept winning on the indy track Roger Penske is also a cheating bastard as well who bent the rules to suit his team and drivers I think that Nigel Mansell did go and become rookie IndyCar champion though and that's why he's still rated as one of the best all time motor racing drivers Even Lewis Hamilton and most of the current F1 drivers haven't done anything like that

The year that Emmo lost all his fans in the USA for refusing the traditional milk for his orange juice from his Brazilian orange farm. Total disrespect for the IMS traditions.

Indycars soon evaporated from interest in Europe after Jim Clark and Graham Hill, and the same happened after Nigel Mansell. Brits and others were following their boys not indy cars. Smiling at them showing America how motorsport is done. Motorsport fans across the world mock American motorsport, and i have to agree, the best racing and impressive events are found elsewhere. Indy 500 is the only one they've heard of and care little about it. Le Mans and The World Championship are the ones that pull weight outside of North America. The bias against Mansell was embarrassing for American motorsport and sportsmanship, not from the other drivers but from everyone else.

Wrong Mongo. It was a 2.7liter Coventry Climax 4cyl in 1961 The First Repco V8 engine did not appear in F1 until 1965. But the 2.7liter Brit engine finished 9th amongst all the 4.2liter Offy's.
