It’s actually not impossible. They only had a half hour to get ready, and Shandi had set her own alarm so she could wake up Jenascia at 4 am after only 2 hours of sleep so she could get ready and shower early. She thought she’d be able to wake back up when she heard the girls and the second alarm, but everyone was rushed and didn’t realize until they were in the elevator that Jenascia was missing. April and Mercedes cover it on KZread, and Oliver Twixt also covers it in an interview with Jenascia. There was no ill will behind the scenes, at least on the contestants part.

It’s infuriating that the men are calling Anna “difficult” and accusing her of having “attitude” for setting a boundary with HER body!

It’s called being firm. She’s 24 years old. She’s a wife and a mom. She’s mature and just knows that she doesn’t need to do this if she does not want to. She’s got people in her life who love her and enough strength to know that she doesn’t have to deal with this if she doesn’t want to.

Most upsetting was the men arguing "her attitude" was an issue. She set boundaries and that's not enough for them, boundaries aren't ok, she has to have "an acceptable" argument to have boundaries.

Yes but that's pretty damn accurate to how most of the industry was and probably still is. It's drilled in to models that they have to be compliant to make it and that is largely the truth because models who have opinions and boundaries are trodden on and prevented from making it to the top. I hate to say it but it's sexist men and women who think like sexist men who determine who makes it in the industry.

Dude this literally just happened between my boyfriend and I. I got upset and he was like “but I don’t get it.” So I explained it and it was back and forth. Till I said, “you know what. I’m way more mad now, and not even at what first happened. Stop invalidating my experience and feelings. I’m allowed to have feelings that you don’t understand and not be harrassed.” That date didn’t end well.

@@wolto3 ANTM isn't a modeling agency or a brand in the modeling/fashion world. This show is suppose to be about grooming and preparing these ladies for what to possibly expect in the modeling industry. The show often tells them that if they say no, stand up for themselves, not comfortable with a particular photoshoot, etc. it's pretty much the end of their career. The show doesn't tell them about options that they have and they can opt out of photoshoots that they're not comfortable with. They could have given Anna the option to wear nude underwear or a band that they offered Shannon & Robin in S1 but they didn't. Just you're not going to be all the way naked get out.

As a SA survivor who was also a model, I would have a complete breakdown at this shoot. Like Jessica said, they can’t do this. This isn’t informed consent. They always tell you what the job entails before you even accept the terms. They don’t surprise you like this. Because in the real world, if a model walks off, you don’t get shot so the job doesn’t get done and you don’t get paid 🚫$$. I had multiple jobs pop up that I wasn’t comfortable with because of my trauma. Jobs like posing with a man and pretending to be married or kissing a man. I turned those jobs down. But never in a million years would you show up to a modeling gig and hear for the first time that you’re going to be naked with a naked man. It just wouldn’t happen. That is not informed consent.

I think the show was more about pushing boundaries for ratings than anything.

As a younger person, the show led me to believe that everything and anything was to be expected, that models didn't really have a right to refuse, especially when it comes to nudity. I'm so glad people are calling out predatory behavior, and shame on Tyra for grossly misrepresenting the modeling industry/contracts/etc.

You’d be black listed in the quickest of seconds if you did not allow abuse, mistreatment, exploitation, etc. same with actresses! You did it with a smile and hid to cry behind the scenes, sometimes drugs, sometimes breakdowns, etc. but what you definitely did not do was go against the “Hollywood” grain in any way or you’d be targeted, blackballed and forgotten! It's a photoshoot for CONTACT LENSES. They're doing all of this for a shoot that would benefit from being a beauty shot since it's supposed to be about what goes in your eyes. Also per usual, Jessica 100% nailed it. Models have to give consent and antm NEVER addresses that when a model refuses to do something.

I remember when this first aired I thought she was crazy for not doing what they told her to do. In 2002 it was different, but now I realize how unbelievably wrong this was and so happy she stood up for herself!

The way Tyra said "you're borderline plus size" to that super skinny model was horrible. She knows what she was doing. That's just straight up bullying. She probably felt so self conscious after that comment.. I can't even imagine that humiliation.

It was a different time. Having someone that 'size' was considered woke which is probably why she keeps mentioning it.

Nigel revealed that her being late didnt actually affect the schedule because of how time consuming the body art was. Punctuality is super important, but she really didnt cause as much harm as they implied. Also Jenascia had woken up, but then fell asleep again which was why she was late. She said it in an interview

The power of editing. When she got to the set, you could see some other models walking around fully clothed; the body painting hadn't even started yet. But it brought drama and helped create a storyline, I guess.

I think it’s crazy they didn’t offer the girls nipple covers that were skin color because they’re retouching them anyways, or even a silicone covering or skin toned underwear for the models. That’s unbelievable that they put the girls in these predicaments

This, if they wanted to truly wanted to make Anna comfortable, they could have offered nude underwear. But once again, IT WAS A SHOOT FOR CONTACTS Why did they need to be nude for that?

total respect for the woman who didn't pose nude with it being against her values and morals.... they set her up... but she did not fail.

As someone who does photography and costuming, they absolutely could have made a skin colored mesh suit and painted that instead of the models. There’s absolutely no reason why they had to be naked.

So basically their boss is saying "You need to pose naked, with naked men you have never met in close contact with you, without any consent, input or veto power on your part, and if you don't you're fired". What an eerie echo of all those men for whom women are commodities. There was zero consent about the men (or at least none was shown), so that in itself is a form of assault, and those who were uncomfortable but still 'consented' did so through coercion. They could have EASILY put the girls in a micro bralet (or pasties at bare minimum) and seamless nude panties/thong same for the guy for his parts. I think this was a easy way for the team to weed out who wouldn't do what they're told. Also April did the best she could when the others threatened to leave without them if she went back for the other girl. Also it's ridiculous that anyone bigger than Shandi is "plus sized". God I forgot how TOXIC this show was/still is.

Funny this is, Jenascia revealed in an interview that she had actually woken up before everyone else and had even showered - but then she fell back asleep afterwards. That's the WORST! Thankfully, she said it wasn't as big of a deal as the show portrayed because there were long waiting times for the photoshoot anyway!

Yep, she said that they were kept out super late the night before at Tavern on the Green, she went to bed at 2 am, Shandi set an alarm to walks her up early at 4 am so she could shower and shave (at the the producers direction) before the mad dash to the shower in the morning, and once she’s done that, she went back to sleep thinking she’d hear the other girls when they got up, but she was exhausted. April tried to go back to wake her up, but the production team was in the elevator and shook their heads no (they weren’t allowed to actually talk to the contestants) and while they meant “no, we’re going down, not up” she took it as “no, you can’t go up” so she felt she had to leave. Jenascia said in an interview with Oliver Twixt that by the time she’s gotten to set, only three girls had been painted (not enough makeup artists on the season 2 budget) and the first girl had just started shooting. Nigel said in his interview with Mercedes and April (on KZread) that he didn’t care, but production made him “go raise a fuss” except he clearly didn’t want to, as he wasn’t upset, and that wasn’t his style.

I'm convinced, upon seeing this again years later and knowing the final shoots of the first season, this was a deliberate photoshoot choice. Two of the girls in the previous cycle said they wouldn't do a nude shoot (which again was sprung on them without any knowledge or consent) so this time the show producers were like, "Okay, let's get the ones who won't listen to us out of the way immediately." Which is disgusting. When this first aired though, I was a teen. I remember thinking Anna was totally in the right for standing up for herself and not doing it. You should never be forced into going against your principles. I hope she went on to have a kickass life after the show. Jessica, as always, I love seeing your reactions to this show.

Yeah, one of those girls -- her name was Shannon, if I remember correctly -- came back for the All-Star cycle and it was the same deal there. She was eliminated for not posing in underwear, which she said was only for her husband to see. And Jay and Nigel were acting like she'd committed Top Model murder or something.

God I was also a teen watching this show the first time and though I was raised to respect myself and to defend myself it's hard to believe that consent was never part of those discussions and I used to be on the side of ANTM with these issues, thinking well it's a job, isn't it normal for models. So disgusting that a show like this would normalize something so horrible and not normal to our generation. So glad I've learned to see past that and can question and protest the harassment and assault on these poor young women

It broke my heart when she said everything won’t be special anymore for her husband. Everyone has their own value to their body and nobody should feel ashamed of holding that value, regardless of why that it. ( edit: I don’t believe exposing your body devalues a woman at all, but the fact is many women believe that and I was saying it broke my heart not only because her boundaries were disrespected but that she believes in something like that) (It’s also true to hold value on your own body while empowering other women to do as they wish! which is what I personally do)

I do kind of wish this were more about her needs, desires, insecurities, or comfort rather than the priorities and insecurities of a man though. This show just highlights the shitty quality of men a lot of women date in their teens and early twenties and how willing a lot of women are to let those men control and manipulate them. I can't help but rewatch it and think how unhealthy a lot of the relationships portrayed really seem.

Producer: how many times can we violate the models and do things without their consent and make them uncomfortable for the TV show and show exactly what won't happen in real modeling ANTM: Yes

For context, this was the same era when the photographer Terry Richardson was active and fashionable. If you don't know who that is, look him up. Extremely creepy. Normalizing the idea that a person must agree to expose every part of themself on set, or be cool with nudity from others on set, when they were not given prior warning or the opportunity to refuse, is not okay. Pressuring them and threatening them with professional repercussions, when it is the photographer who is out of line... It is not okay.

Not me forgetting how plus size used to mean healthy skinny XD edit: got a notification back to this comment. I want to add that any type of skinny can be healthy, it’s just that the plus size girls were still very much skinny despite not being labeled as such!

So the Jenascia thing has been addressed in interviews. She actually woke up early and fell back asleep. April and I think 1 or 2 girls headed back and saw a few cameramen shake their head “no.” They assumed it meant you can’t go back up and left(April said it might’ve been because they were going down to the service floor but they weren’t allowed to talk to them).

People love to hate on Robin from season 1. But I respect her and this other girl for saying “no.” I’m glad they did not let someone walk all over their boundaries.

I respected their decisions to opt out of the shoot, but I found Robin to be very judgey and negative towards basically everyone. The other one, Shannon, I think, didn't come across that way to me (at least with what made it to screen). She seemed to only be worried about her own behavior, whereas Robin tended to worry about everyone else's. My strongest memory of Robin is her complaining that the male models were "lusting!" with a very prunish expression.

My issue with Robin isn’t her choice not to pose nude but her judge mental, preachiness. As an ex-Christian that’s a big turn off to me.

@@lauraelliott6909correct. To put it simply, they were probably going to send one of the two girls home that didn’t pose nude that week. Robbyne came off as more judgmental of others and wanting to portray herself as a perfect person, whereas Shannon had her own convictions but sought to never judge people for having different beliefs. So the judges (grudgingly) respected it more when Shannon put her foot down and it was like, her defining moment on the show. Also they did Shannon dirty with the edit of the night Ebony brought her partner to the apartment. Adrianne came to Shannon’s defense in a live chat they did together during the pandemic. Elyse was willing to play ball with the producers but Adrianne knew she wasn’t telling the truth. Shannon herself spoke at length about how it’s not in her religious beliefs to judge other people for their imperfections since she’s not perfect. That she just wants to love people. So it bothered her that they played it like she avoided Ebony and Ka - because she actually did come out to meet them and she said “I even shook her girlfriend’s hand.” Shannon’s not perfect but I think she’s a good person.

Not being comfortable doing something is enough of an argument ! She doesn't have to say more ! It's a nude picture ! Not comfortable being nude for a shoot is self explanatory ! WOW the judges pissed me off in that one ! So much so, that I commented (instead of being a silent viewer).

Tyra and her judges are just gross people ! That woman judge who can’t wrap her head around another woman not wanting to be naked in public is just annoying af and she doesn’t get that it’s not about religion, it’s just personal belief and morals.

I’m a sexual abuse survivor so I would maybe be ok with me being semi nude but seeing a guy nude in front of me… HELL to the NO. That’s not ok and was sprung on them literally and it’s just unnecessarily obscene.

Doesn’t even taking being an SA survivor to not be into that but for anybody who is that would be very triggering I’m sure. I mean these guys just got down to brass tacks and stripped off right in front of the ladies. Could they really not have skin tone underwear for this shot? Horrible concept for a bunch of novice models to have this be their first shoot! I mean even experienced models might not be okay with this or it might take some time to be ready to shoot… like they did nothing to get these girls comfortable. No wonder Sara got uncomfortable. She seemed okay until she pointed out with a bit of a sheepish face that the guy who was there with everything hanging out. They play it so casual. And it was so unnecessary. I feel like Sara was like “whoa I do not want to look at this random naked guy next to me”

Jenascia, April and Mercedes have all talked about the overslepping situation in podcasts and interviews (you can find them here on YT). They go into much further details, but basically Jenascia woke up early, went back to sleep, and the girls forgot to wake her back up in their rush to get ready. When April and a few others went back to get her, a miscommunication with one of the sound guys lead to them leaving without her. Everyone is on good terms now though, and Jenascia herself said that considering the circumstances, she would have probably done the same thing.

At 5'10 & 113 lbs I was being told I was "too big" now after watching this and what is being called "plus size" I am in shock. I am so glad I have finally found confidence in myself at what is a more natural weight for myself which is around 140. This type of nonsense really made myself and so many women and girls struggle with their view of self & body dysmorphia. Its such a shame her show has gone on as long as it has and that she & the show hasn't had to be held accountable for any of this bs.

Yes, multiple episodes she said she won’t do nude she would use a nude thong or something they can retouch out. I don’t have specific episodes in mind for example but I do remember her saying it.

​@@donilemley5940 Correct. Tyra said that she doesn't do nude, she said she STIMULATES nude which is a completely different thing. Tyra said that she wears a g-string and they retouch and edit. She said to her that's not nudity. I don't think this photoshoot is nudity either because the girls are wearing body laing and giving off the illusion that they are wearing clothes.

I feel like Nigel is constantly choosing photoshoots where the girls are wearing as little clothing as possible. It's so uncomfortable and I can't believe I never noticed it sooner.

Nigel doesn't choose the photoshoots. He is just the photographer. I think the person who comes with the concepts are Jay Manuel. Since he is the creative director of the photoshoots.

As a body painter, this makes me angry for the models. It’s so inappropriate. Like you said, they could have made changes, like the men wearing flesh tone underwear. There are special pasties and adhesive underwear the painted models can wear, and in the case of anyone feeling uncomfortable with that, like you said, there are bandeaus/bras, etc. It’s not easy to paint on fabric and keep the coloring and saturation consistent, but it could have been worked out. The models’ comfort and safety levels are the top priority.

ANTM was such a hateful, misogynist show. It did nothing to empower anyone OR to launch careers. The fact that they brought contestants on the show who would not do nude/almost nude shoots (you know the producers asked) is very telling. I suspect they intentionally set up the situation to shame women who won’t compromise on this issue. The same with women who were uncomfortable simulating intimacy.

One of the things I really hated about this show is that they didn’t want the models to have their own opinions. Like if one of them disagreed with anything, they automatically had an “attitude” and “weren’t ready for the industry” like the judges’ opinion is not the end all. I really don’t like how the judges wrote that girl off for having an attitude because she didn’t want to be naked. It’s not easy to just take your clothes off in front of a ton of people you don’t even know.

Yeah they’re not being very professional: a real professional would know “this is something that is very vulnerable for these young women to do so let’s close off the set and make this as easy for them as we can. We don’t want them to feel violated for the purpose of making this art and if they are comfortable we will get better images” Personally, if I were doing the look for this shoot and Anna said she was not comfortable I would ask her if she was what she was not comfortable with. I’d see if the creative can be modified in some way so she could participate in the shoot because do they really not have skin tone underwear? Knowing how uncomfortable I would be doing anything with nudity I’d tell them models to all wear skin tone underwear that day to set. Or be prepared with pasties. There’s no need for them to get fully naked.

The audacity to treat her like she was difficult for having boundaries. Yeah she’s a model but that doesn’t mean her body is not her own. I just don’t understand the judges mindset.

I don’t know the mechanics of how it all works with body paint, but it’s a pretty normal thing to be uncomfortable with nudity and I think it’s something you should be prepared for with whoever it was that designed the looks for this shoot. If the creative was that important to the artists present, I would want to do what I could to have all the images and so that all the girls could be present. I think they just didn’t really want to deal with the girls. One way or another. But the reality is you have a person in front of you not a hanger so whether it just being a little bit jittery or being apprehensive… go do something where you don’t have to deal with people if you don’t like them. 🤪 I feel like Nigel might not be a mean person but he didn’t handle this well. Exactly! To me it wasn’t even about her being married, though it was nice to hear that she seemed comfortable being naked with him and knew that is something different than what was going on here. It’s like why are you offended when it doesn’t affect you Nigel? Like to me that was very very odd. I would get the idea of if someone wanted to ask her what she thought about artistic nudity and if she thought it was possible for that to be non-sexual. That would have been a fair conversation but that wasn’t the way they went about it.

I mean it's way too late in the game to change the concept of the photoshoot. I mean they can't change the photoshoot to accommodate one person. Time and money have been spent to do the photoshoot, they can't change it now.

That's one thing I don't miss about modeling. You can always say no to nude shoots, but a lot of photographers or marketing campaigns for brands want the model to strip down for certain concepts. Good for that girl for saying no!

While the issues of not letting the models know in advance about the nudity or the nude male model are basically inexcusable, I can maybe understand asking someone not taking part in the shoot to leave. If they've expressed discomfort, you're getting them out of the environment that was making them uncomfortable, but it's also making sure that it's a closed set for the other models, taking uninvolved people out of the room.

Nigel was the one with an attitude not Anna. She was a bit sassy in the ITM about how I don’t know how these girls did this or something like that but not out of disrespect to them. Like she thought it was crazy and it was!

In season 1 contestants Robin and Shannon didn’t want to pose nude. This challenge was I believe at final 4. Production didn’t know what to do so they just let them go to judging where Robin was eliminated. I feel like production decided to do this in the very beginning to say “If you don’t listen to us and do every single thing we tell you to, you can’t be here”. They didn’t want a repeat of season 1.

Agreed and like, the season one challenge was the final four, alone in an isolated enclave in that bar in Paris. This was intentionally the first week, with a dozen girls they don't know also getting nude body painted alongside them and some random naked man they've never met. They did this wanting to make at least girl uncomfortable enough to refuse.

I think you’re right bc in another later season the like first challenge was either a lingerie or nude shoot that if I remember correctly was with a male model I think they try to get it out of the way quick to avoid a front runner going home later on

Some of these girls are 18 and it’s the first time they left their tiny towns. That alone is intimidating and now they’re demanding them to take off their clothes with no respect for different levels of comfort or modesty. And they often make fun of the modest girls or ones who are virgins. I’m quite modest and this show kinda made me feel like a loser because of it. They had no sense of responsibility for the women and girls who watched this show, especially teens.

I think that even for women who are not against doing a nude shoot, they do not do much to help the ladies get comfortable. Not to mention I am so glad Jessica mentioned that the men were naked because that’s one thing where I’ve never been able to get over the crap they pulled with this shoot.

So proud of her for walking away. I’m sure she was very happy later in the future. Especially when ANTM started to be exposed of all their bull.

I really appreciate how everyone is upset about them not following her boundaries. When I was growing up watching this show, I was made to believe that if I didn't do exactly what they wanted, then I could never be a model so I stopped pursuing the dream and sometimes did things I was a bit uncomfortable doing in other jobs. With everyone stressing that setting and obeying boundaries nowadays, I can at least be comfortable that generations after me won't have to be uncomfortable and will pursue their dreams without fear.

I would've woken her up. Goddd these girls are acting like some of my 14 year old daughter's peers...sooo petty and obnoxious 😒

Did the show legally not have to get the girls’ consent to be nude prior to the start of the show? I can’t see how they would be allowed to film them nude without any prior legal documentation.

Especially with the way they pulled their briefs off right in front of the ladies. I can’t imagine that is what they do on a professional set for a modeling shoot.

There's literally a type of tape for the genital area to cover up for body paint, same for the chest. No excuse, they did it to shame and throw her out

The fact that those two women are considered PLUS SIZED makes me want to burn this industry to the ground. Edit: also, "5'7" is a little short for a model, so you have to compensate with *punctuality*." If she reaches any further, she's going to lose an arm.

As someone who has siblings who have problems getting up in the morning. I am hard wired to make sure people are out of bed when there's a set time they need to be.

I’ve seen this episode so many times and I honestly only just recently realized that Nigel saying in judging that the models should always be informed of the context of the shoot is the BIGGEST red flag of the show as a whole. Like the judges and all the professionals KNOW that what they’re doing by springing these things on the models is wrong.

Isn't it sad that in reality, everyone would have been nice enough to wake people up? I'm sure producers must have told the models not to wake her up because they need to bring in their "competitive spirit" because the "industry" is like that.

Haha it has been revealed that April did try to go back to wake her up but the camera men were blocking her from going in.

She didn't want to tell the men that she didn't want to be touched in certain areas in order to be painted. She said that on set.

That’s something I was thinking about when I saw April’s dragon being painted on is that they were probably getting close to some intimate areas and that must be uncomfortable.

What gets me is she gave a very clear answer when she was talking to Nigel about why she didn't want to do it. He should have spoken up at the panel and said, no she made it clear when we talked on set. So messed up. Everyone on that panel would not do anything they are not comfortable with. Guaranteed.

I hated how the other girls acted like waking Jenascia up would have been this big hassle. Like Tyra said later on in this episode, they could have gave her a little shove and said “come on.” 😂

I am so glad that you are stressing how important it is to have consent for photographers to do these type of photo shoots. It is really good for models to know what is & isn’t acceptable. Side note: whenever you make your video for what should and shouldn’t be in a models portfolio, you should include many of the outrageous shoots from here and some (if any) of the ones that could be used. Maybe the ones that Tyra shot 🤷🏾‍♀️😄

So i watched April saying in one of her videos that the producer won't allow them to go up, that her and few other contestants on the show did go back to the elevator and once they were there a producer appeared and said that they could not go up, so indeed, this was arranged.

You misunderstood. She went back in, and there were some crew members in the elevator, and they were going down to their camp in the basement. They shook their head “no” to signal that the elevator was going the wrong way. April then took that to mean “No, you can’t go back up”. It was a misunderstanding that made for good TV. She did try, at least.

I am an *actual* plus sized model and that was definitely some shade. My very first shoot was a nude shoot, and I definitely knew what I was getting into BEFORE I arrived at the studio. I'm not sure how I would react if it was just sprung on me like this.

I could not allow someone to sleep without trying to wake her. I would feel too guilty.

“I didn’t know I had to play mom today” That’s really sad, no one knows what people are going through physically or mentally. Due to my mental health and medications it’s almost physically impossible to wake up without my boyfriends help sometimes. It’s just easy to be nice and they know how devastating it is to screw up their shot there or be sent home.

I have to take sleeping medicine and sometimes I get sleep paralysis and it can last forever where I’m physically trying to wake up and move but can’t it’s very scary they could have just checked up on her to make sure she’s safe since all the noise wasn’t already waking her up

Its sad that nobody had any empathy really for Jenascia. Obviously we can know now the situation was set up, but why did it not cross anyone's mind that there may have been a medical reason she wasn't awake/waking up? Breathing =/= fine and the fact that her roommates didn't bother to look into it further is kind of messed up.

it’s not that hard to get an intimacy coordinator on set or to even put on some type of coverage and paint over it. the girls should’ve been told about this before hand…

This is outrageous, some of the girls are fresh out of high school. And I’m still trying to figure out what the hell nudity has to do with contact lenses.

About the plus size comments. So I started modeling the year this show aired. In 2004 "plus size modeling" was just starting to gain popularity. The most famous "plus size model was "Emme". At that time fashion models were size 0/2 and "plus size models" started at size 4/6. I know it's a wild concept especially through today's lense but that was the norm at the time. Thank goodness we have made some progress since that time.

One of the reasons why I aspired to be a photographer is because of ANTM. I’ve watched all the original cycle on it’s original run and never really focused on how wrong this show was. I forgot how negative and toxic this show was. As a photographer now and working with models, I’ve done completely different from the show’s environment. I always make models comfortable and get their trust. Give positive feedbacks and work together as a team. I never ask or push models to things they are not comfortable with. Like them, I have a reputation to uphold.

That Model should be Proud for refusing to do it.

I actually loved the concept for this shoot and I understood why they were nude because it’s an Adam & Eve theme. However, it’s still crazy that none of the girls consented to this ahead of time, nor did they consent to posing with a male who is also completely nude. That is absolutely unacceptable.

What do Adam and Eve have to do with contacts? They were created in a perfect world before the fall. They didn't need contacts.

I’m glad she stood her ground, someone, anyyyone, pressing ur boundaries doesn’t need any reason why u don’t want to engage with them. Like the number of times they did shoots with male models that became inappropriate due to a male model being gross is too high

The sad thing is that Jenasha helped out April at the challenge the day before. Run upstairs, shake her awake and explain the others can't wait so order a damn taxi. Do the girls have cell phones? If they do they shoulda be calling her all the way there. Don't really understand why Janice said 'oh I get it, your religion' then 'her refusal didn't work for me'. Could they not have come up with some sort of compromise because her costume looked like one of the most revealing.

My roommate sophomore year overslept for her stat final. I had a final later, but I work up, saw she was still asleep, and woke her up, because that’s what decent people do.

I think forgot where I heard this but there was some KZreadr or podcast that interviewed Jenascia. She said that the cameramen or producers stopped some of the other girls from waking her up in order to make some drama.

Seeing this show in my thirties leaves a different feeling and listening to your commentary. A lot more stuff makes sense. I remember applying to be on this show 3 times and remember a part of the application stating that these pictures can't be used for your portfolio. And you can't be under contract with another agency. I was so young and naive at the age 18-21 when I tried to get on this show. Everything happens for a reason. And I would have woken the girl up that's just common decency.

Honestly I respect the woman who refused to do the photoshoot. From what I understand from you, the models have to approve and sign off on photoshoots that include things like nudity and male models. CLEARLY, this shoot had both of those elements (AND the male model was nude, as well) and she did not feel comfortable in that situation. I wouldn't have done it either. It wasn't worth it to her, and as you say, she couldn't use this photograph in her portfolio anyways.....so why endure the humiliation of it if its not even worth doing? And she DID tell them EXACTLY why she didn't want to do a nude photoshoot. She was married and she felt that her body should ONLY be seen by her husband....not some stranger for a photoshoot. She didn't feel comfortable and it was not ladylike for her and that's absolutely a good reason. I'm QUITE sure that if you had been the photographer and she expressed discomfort, you would NOT have made her do the shoot and you certainly wouldn't have mocked and criticized her for this choice. As for Jenascia....I understand that this is a competition and the other girls didn't want to help her because they felt it was her responsibility to get herself up and dressed in time. Its a competition and they are here to win and they saw her oversleeping as an easy way of getting rid of the competition. Fair enough. If I was April, I would have maybe spoken to the driver and said "We are missing a girl. Let me go get her and please don't leave without me." and AT LEAST make sure your teammate is OK and not lying in the bed seriously ill or dead. On the other hand, once she DID wake up and realize her mistake in oversleeping, she should have taken a deep breathe and got to the shoot ASAP, apologized PROFUSELY to Nigel, for her tardiness, and then put on a professional smile, stopped crying and acting a fool and got on with the shoot. She had one of the most elaborate costumes and makeup looks and as Tyra always says....time is money. The photographer doesn't care whose fault it is that you were late or why you were late. He just wants the shot, not tears and excuses and drama. Instead, she was whining and crying and cursing the other girls for not waking her up. And this photoshoot was to promote contact lenses....so I didn't see the reason why they chose a nude shoot for that. Why not a tasteful beauty shot of the face, showing off the beautiful colors of the lenses and maybe put the jewels and body paint around the girls' eyes to highlight their eyes and bring focus to the product. THAT would have been a beautiful, tasteful shot. From a full-body shot, you can't even see the lenses well, much less focus on them. On most of the girls, I was looking at the bright psychedelic body paint and the apple....not her eyes. Honestly, if I were watching this and I HAD NOT heard you tell us that this photoshoot was for contact lenses, I would have thought (based on where the focus was in all the photos) that this shoot was for apples or body paint. Not contact lenses. I think Nigel's reactions to these two ladies was reversed. He should have been kind and compassionate with Anna and found a solution to make her comfortable (because her request wasn't unreasonable....I think they KNEW she wouldn't do it and they wanted to do this photoshoot to bring out the drama for both girls). He should have dismissed Jenascia for being late and then making it worse by having a meltdown on set. And the male model wasn't even needed. I didn't even SEE him in most of the photos. He was just hiding in the background.

She said she wants to be Christ like. She knew why she didn't want do it because Christ like people don't pose naked in front of the camera and she felt uncomfortable. I respect that.

I get her reasons. They said she only gave half a reason, but it's because how much there was to her "no" that she wasnt saying. Her "I'm uncomfortable and will not do this," shouldve been enough with how obviously distressed she was. The makeup girl watching her break down was like, "chill, I hear ya." I get they wanted to know her boundary reason so they can try to overcome it, but her reason was solid enough for me at just the husband reason. The no notice, spring-on concept was cheap, too. Religiously, I think the factor was due to her naked form being part of the sacred bond she shares with her husband. As such, without him there, she didnt feel she should make that decision for him, as they're wed & have a partnership. She probably felt like she was betraying him & their vows if she exposed herself to strangers. Her ladylike reason embodies the idea of her self respect & her reputation. She was uncomfortable, worried how this would look for her & her husband, & it was unnecessary. Jessica is right, & so are many other comments. Nude underwear is a thing & how they painted, there couldve been coverings. Who wants to have a picture that cant even go in a folio & this shoot wasnt going to make her top model. Plus it was televised, what if it came out horrendous. People would see her naked, uncomfortable, trying hard but failing, & not wanting to do the shoot in the first place. It's foolish. It would bring shame to my family, I would be embarrassed to tell my grandparents I got nude to advertise contact lenses. I am glad Tyra was Ok with her saying no to being nude, and so was Nigel. The photo guy was such a jerk, her no was worse than the one who showed up late. He seemed he could care less about punctuality cause he couldn't get his perv shots imo.

Anna has the cutest accent ! Good for her for standing up for what she believes.

I found it irksome that they were like..."she doesn't even understand her argument", about Anna. Just because thet may not get it doesn't mean that she was confused.

On the one hand, I respect Anna for standing up for herself and saying no to a photoshoot she didn’t feel comfortable with. On the other hand, I hated how she stated it was “not ladylike”, implying that all the models who chose to do the shoot were not ladylike because they did it. She could have stuck with her principles without putting down other women.

I don’t think she meant it as an insult against the other women. I think she just felt like it was not how she was raised. Ladylike has a specific meaning to her and this sort of work did not fit within that. I think she was emotional so she was very outspoken.

First of all, neither girls were plus-size. Also, the blond girl (Heather) is NOT plus-size. Also, Tyra gets so up in arms when people have referred to her as fat/big, yet she’s claiming this thin girl who is smaller than her is nearly plus-size? Just stop. This show was so harmful to women

It's like this show puts on "if you wanna be a TOP model, you have to do EVERYTHING." Maybe, but even the most successful models don't do everything, I believe. Naomi. Cindy. Giselle. Even Tyra says she doesn't pose nude, but simulates it. It's manipulation.

Yeah but none of those models you mentioned went to a reality tv show to become successful, and they are at a reality show not the real modeling bussiness

Of course there's gonna be things they don't do. Everyone has values, fears, things they are ashamed of... Even if it's not your body, what if someone asks you to portray a political opinion you very much disagree with? Or if they want you to do a thing that triggers a trauma response? It's a model, not a mannequin. They're gonna have boundaries.

Back in the early 2000s, regular sized bodies were considered plus sized in the modeling industry. My understanding was sample size for “straight modeling” was 0-2 and plus sized modeling sizes were like 10-12, so being size 4-8 put you in an “in-between size or “no model land’ from an article I read from that time.

I would definitely have woken her up. Just because it's a competition doesn't mean the contestants can't be nice to each other.

I totally agree with your final opinion: I’m very proud of the woman who stood strong on her morals and didn’t want to get naked. She’s a gorgeous woman and she seems happy to have a fulfilled family life, that’s true happiness, not staying around that bunch of bozos offending and literally assaulting women with stupid naked concepts. And the other girl who didn’t wake up on time, it just shows how mean people are among themselves and of course it was staged up by the production to create more(stupid) “drama”… uggg this episode was just wrong but then again the whole series is a mess. She is beautiful! Wonderful southern accent. I respect a woman who stands up for her beliefs. I hope her husband was super proud of her. I feel like she was trying to say that she has people who love her, she knows what it’s like to be naked but still feel safe because she feels that way when she is with her husband. Big difference between that and the experience of these frankly toxic strangers trying to get her to strip off on the show. Honestly I wish she had stayed because I wanted to know more about Anna. She had something special and she had a great portfolio after the show!

@@kherise Awe thank you. I see some of myself in Anna now that I’m actually a few years older than she was at the time of filming. Can’t believe she was only 24! She had the bone structure and grace of a woman in her early 30s. I also appreciate how girls like Catie seemed to get Anna would be uncomfortable because “she’s at a different place in her life - she has a husband and a son”.

I hate the narrative this show pushes- if you're not willing to compromise your values, you'll never be a model. Which we all know isn't true. Tyra said herself she won't do completely nude shots, she'll only simulate nudity. So why are these girls not offered that?

I mean to be fair to the models, this was season 2, they really thought this was gonna make them a supermodel so the girls are definitely more competitive than the later seasons

i used to follow you many many years ago on another one of my youtube channels when i started doing wedding photography. your videos helped so much! i saw the clip to this video, i was like, where have i seen that name before? look at you with so many subscribers! loved this video. and by the way, it is so refreshing to see your commentary support women and their individual decisions, whether or not they may seem antiquated. great video!

I remember in a lot of episodes of ANTM they were like trying to focus on the modeling world, after these videoes, which I love I can see how wrong they actually were, and are. Keep up the great work Jessica.
