Nigel Farage profile: how his political career started in a pub

Gary Gibbon speaks to Ukip leader Nigel Farage, who's favourite photo opportunity is in the pub with a pint in his hand. The mere fact that Mr Farage is on the stage is an indication that he has led Ukip from the fringes to the mainstream of British political debate.Sign up for Snowmail, your daily preview of what is on Channel 4 News, sent straight to your inbox, here: mailing.channel4.com/public/sn...

The problem isn't with the scrutiny that the media are giving UKIP (it's fair to ask about the apparent ever-growing ideological incoherence of UKIP). The problem is, they don't ask the same questions of the other parties. At least UKIP has one policy on which everyone in UKIP is agreed. The same can't be said of Labour or the Tories or the Lib Dems. They change their policies drastically from one moment to the next.

  • @johnbrereton5229

UKIP has never been a one policy party, it has always had many other policies as well, though leaving the EU dictatorship was obviously their main one. However, these policies were so good that the MSM ignores them and the other parties stole them.

It is interesting what is actually saying Nigel Farage. He is pleading for a proportional system of political representation, a mechanism that distributes votes more evenly among more elected parties. As he acknowledges, the current majority system which favours two parties on power. By that Farage is actually European, because this feature is essentially a continental, not an Anglo-Saxon trademark, political tradition, culture. Farage is pro-European in this sense. By that, he is a representative of the anti-establishment too, an opposite of Labour, Tories who favour the dominance of two major parties in the British society and by that legitimize the centuries-long consensus of majoritarian status quo.

Superb orator, finding a target to direct peoples anger against and harnessing that energy to build a simplistic movement that does absolutely nothing to address the reasons for the anger. The EU is not the cause of his followers discontent. Farage probably knows this so now, so the updated reason for anger is betrayal.

What a god - ... this man is s giant in the history or England, our beautiful people snd history, our sense of decency and dignity and our ability to kick the slimy smug sanctimonious elites that controls us... The truth is WE despise our leaders and celebrities and TV figures - and we LOVE him purely for giving you a damn good kick in the nuts (not that you spineless people are true men anyway)... Tossers! Love Nigel ... We are never going to forget the beautiful thing he has done. Wonderful times to be English. Another thing Ch4 would know little about

I don't ever plan to go into politics but then again neither did Nigel Farage....so just in case it does come to pass that by some extraordinary reason I am on the campaign trail and someone/anyone hits me, I will lay them out, flat on their back...(1:26...how can someone be assaulted when surrounded by police and nobody does a damned thing about it). I'm 19st, though not over weight, still fit and in my 50's....everytime I see these bastards hitting Farage it makes my blood boil as he is a genuinely nice chap (and if anyone needs proof, check Nigel Farage and Rachael Johnson First Date) and just because someone disagrees with you doesn't give anyone the the right to throw milkshakes, throw eggs or assault someone....man or woman should get a good kicking if they decide to assault anyone!

You have got a very craggy old fellow trying to put Nigel down there he is pretty jealous I think. You overdid the drinking shots a bit as well. Nigel is a good man and his wife has actually said Nigel does not have a nasty bone in his body.
