Look, to get an idea of Calzaghe you have to at least listen to what they say and have said coaches, boxers and former boxers, you will find that from them that at the end of the games are the people who have more authority in the boxing world, yes are always expressed with enthusiasm towards Joe Calzaghe, so I don't think that Calzaghe has been underestimated, at least not from the world of boxing, it is logical on the internet you will hear comments of all kinds, but what matters is having approval from the world in which you express and from your fans, certainly if he had moved as a teenager to the United States, an even more competitive environment, he would have become even stronger, because he would have had to adapt to the tight competitiveness in the US, I think he would have become even stronger, but Calzaghe managed to do very great things anyway, he found a way to win, and to come out undefeated, sincerely than both he and his father who followed him in every incident ntro, they did really great things, really!

Joe was a great fighter but you can just about count on one hand the times he was in the ring with a genuine live opponent - apart from Kessler and Lacy (who joe exposed) he fought more mandatory challengers than legit top 10 168pounders or other title holders - now that isn't a knock on his abilities I look at the top guys at super middle in that era that he didn't fight - Ottke, Beyer, Green, Mundine, Echols etc and have no doubt he'd beat them all - but his not fighting those guys is why he doesn't get the credit

hawkermustang no. He had chances to match up against those in America but for whatever reason didn't go until he fought a past-it RJJ and B-Hop. If he had travelled to America after beating Eubank and beaten Keith Holmes, Quincy Taylor or even the fading Frankie Lyles....then no one has any argument. Reggie Johnson was in America at that time......don't think Calzaghe takes that bout though!

Absolutely. Most British boxers up until about 10 years ago crumbled when facing top Americans. Eubank never wanted to face any, he admitted that in The Gloves Are Off. It brought out the best in Benn though, he's said that interviews, he refused to be intimidated and never lost to an American.

I doubt if today's refs would be brave enough to let a fight like that carry on as it's life n death in the ring it's not like calling an offside, getting it wrong n play on people die in the ring n if they're unlucky to survive a brain injury they n their aponants have to live with the consequences. Big respect to anyone who steps in the ring past n present!

Joe is a Legend. I always felt he was driven to just be champion not the lights and glam. I mention him in the gym and people don’t know his name. It’s sad cause to me he arguably is up there with the greatest fighters ever and as an American who is a huge fan of British Boxing I think he is the greatest of his era and maybe ever as far as British boxing goes. Tyson Fury obviously is the biggest and most notable and God Bless Him… absolutely love him. But Joe #1 in my book.

Benn was a great but basically just always went in to tear shit up. 100%, no quit. However, Calzaghe had gears and was a nightmare to fight. Fast hands, stamina for 24 rounds, never mind 12 and a strong chin. He wouldn’t stop throwing, his opponents couldn’t stop getting hit and they couldn’t get him out of there either. That’s why he beat everyone he ever fought and no one could do the same to him. Busy boxer, adapted constantly.

The first time I watched Joe Calzaqui was when he matched up against Jeff Lacey &we know how that went! And after seeing him in subsequent fights my feeling was, he had that rare ability to"up his game" when he was facing better quality fighters! He could rise to the occasion, and adapt to the opponent in front of him! .I also feel he was one of those fighters who just didn't realize h how difficult it was to catch him flush..And if someone did catch him successfully (A flash knock down) they usually didn't get a second opportunity!. And u don't manage to keep ur nose so straight&face so unmarked just by chance in "Prizefighting" for nothing!

Calzaghe was one of the most talented fighters of the last 30 years. I think the two things that stopped him getting the credit he deserved were: 1) Let's be honest, he *was* an arm puncher. 2) He had zero charisma. The Kessler victory stands up, but beyond it there's only a controversial SD over an ageing Hopkins; a battering of Jeff Lacy who turned out to be a hype-job; and two victories against fading legends, Eubank and Jones, where he struggled more than most thought he would. Plus it seems he chose not to fight a young hungry Jermaine Taylor, whoich proved to be a mistake that Hopkins made. There are other top guys out there he could've fought but chose not to. Retiring undefeated is special, but to be an all time great there has to be a little longevity. Just about every boxer on the all time great list had more than 46fights/Calzaghe, 50/Mayweather, 49/Marciano. Julio Ceasar Chavez could have retired after his 89th fight and been 89-0, but he continued on and lost in his 90th fight to Frankie Randall.

What about Mitchell, Brewer, Woodhall, Bika? All world champions. All beaten by Joe. You’ve got a fairly skewed view of Joe’s career. Plus he never struggled against Eubank, he put him on his arse in round one and never looked back. And if you think he struggled against Jones...what? Seriously? Were you even watching the fight? He took the piss out of him for ten rounds!

@@georgemorley1029 Just saying, most all-time greats have more than a 50 fight career. Longevity counts. He was stripped of the IBF because he chose not to face Jermaine Taylor. Brewer was 38 and 7 when he fought him, Eubank was on the down side if his career. Calzaghe was 36yrs old and 46-0 when he retired. Calzaghe was smart enough to see what was coming down the pipe in the form of guys like Jermaine Taylor, Andre Ward, and Authur Abraham. Pretty sure no one wanted any part of Gerald McClellan either.

The only controversy surrounding the Hopkins fight was the judge who went for Hopkins. Calzaghe beat Hopkins comfortably, never in any danger of losing. Although, the same judge thought Canelo beat Golovkin by 8 rounds, it may have looked close on the cards, but in reality, Calzaghe beat Hopkins comfortably.

How did he avoid them? Jones was a huge star at Light Heavy by the time Calzaghe had his breakout win over Eubank at Super Middle. Eubank only fought him because Calazaghe wasn't even a big enough draw for Steve Collins to fight him at the time. A fight was made with Hopkins 5 or 6 years before they actually fought but Hopkins pulled out of it at the last minute.

Amy Mcphee Disgusting BS lie. Benn was clean in his career - which period are you having a prime Calzaghe fight Benn? The peak Benn 88-93 destroys Calzaghe by KO inside 4 Rounds - name me a McClellan on Calzaghe's resume? - every fucker mentions Collins. Collins was a coward who waited until Benn was washed up and finished, and Eubank on the slide before he faced them Remember a PRIME Collins had his ass given to him by McCallum, Johnson and Kalambay When Collins saw who was coming he ran for the hills! Calzaghe should have gone to America after he defeated a Eubank on the slide. There were many bouts out there from him: Keith Holmes (and Holmes never even laces the boots of Nunn), Quincy Taylor, even a Frankie Lyles Reggie Johnson was around......doubt Calzaghe would have gone anywhere near him!

Amy Mcphee McClellan's "trainer" against Benn?!? You write that fucking scumbag Stan Johnson as a "boxing trainer"???? The same Stan Johnson who said he taped up McClellan's hands when he fought Benn, when there is photographic evidence and at least 3 live witnesses, including Sanders, who said that McClellan wrapped his own hands!!! The same Stan Johnson, who McClellan said was not shouting the correct punch-combos in the Peacock Gym, when Gerald was in London a week before the Benn bout! The same Stan Johnson, whose mouth was smashed open and his teeth were knocked out (by McClellan!) because McClellan was fed up with him not knowing what he was doing in pad-work! That Stan Johnson?!? Which other boxer did this fool Stan Johnson "train"? McClellan's boxing trainer was the late, legendary Emmanuel Steward, who Gerald left a bout or 2 before Benn. McClellan did have the decision stolen from him, but that was the fault of the incompetent and clueless Asaro the French ref. That had nothing to do with Benn! I ask you again, name me any1 on Calzaghe's resume who is ANYWHERE near a Gerald McClellan. When McClellan was under Steward, both a prime RJJ and a prime James Toney avoided Gerald. A PRIME Benn (1988-93) would KO Calzaghe inside 4 Rounds. Collins was a coward, who waited until Benn was washed-up and finished before facing him. A PRIME Collins had his ass given to him by McCallum, Johnson and Kalambay.....and ran for the hills when he saw who was coming! You know fuck-all about boxing.

I think JC wins at any point vs NB but not because he was better. Joe had a high work rate, accurate punches and could take a decent punch. Benn would have been a tough fight but I give it to Calzaghe because Benn had a habit of getting caught with punches and getting tired if he didnt ko people. I think Benn would have cut a path through todays SMW division. All that said and as a Calzaghe fan I would watch Benn over Joe.

Is it just me or is it the fact it takes one to knowome (gaydar) that most old school boxing legends are gay and have very feminin ways about them like I do. Let me name a few: nigel Benn, Mike tyson, chris uebank and so many more. But then how could you come out the closet whilst trying to be world champion. Take a look at mma it's also very similer. Am I the only person that has thought about this 🤔😂
