Thank you, sprouts, for the last part. I went to the same school as Nietzsche and already learned a lot about his work when I was 16. It still bothers me that he is often demonized because his sister edited and plainly forged parts of his work which was later used by the Nazis. Looking forward to part 2!

Following Nietzsche ain't gonna take you anywhere good or wise or right... because there aren't such things-objectively-if his worldview is correct. His "strong moral stance" is inconsistent with his naturalistic worldview. I mean, where do morals come from? So, the implications of a worldview and how people actually operate are clearly not the same thing. Are they not consistent because they don't like it or simply because they are not willing to-or because they don't really believe it is true? Hm...

Nietzche in a nutsell: Eventually, the child becomes an adult, or the apprentice becomes the master. In order to make that transition, one has to validate one's experience based on their interactions, not the tales or stories of one's parents, one's boss, or any other authority figure, whether terrestrial or celestial. No one else can authentic your experience but yourself. Nietzsche rightly stated that Western culture (and many others) doesn't prepare anyone to make that transition, so it takes the 'brave and the bold' to step up and validate what is 'good', or 'evil, or transcends both. The worst aspect that Nietzsche detested was how much culture actively resisted people from the transition/transcendence, actively encouraging subservience and obedience. And the best way to learn authenticity, to be able to validate one's experience? Learn to dance! Learn music, art, science. Be creative and critical and curious. And the attitude and skills will develop accordingly.

@@lonewanderer_n7 I am happy that you found it useful. I have often wondered where Nietzsche would have gone if he had not fallen into catatonia. I see strong similarities between his writings and Buddhism. He has a couple brief passages but I don't think he was ever able to study it in depth. Both, Nietzsche and Buddha, strive for authenticity, which often means rejecting the morals and customs of society, especially when they are no longer beneficial. Nietzsche's work was twisted by his sister, but I viewed the 'ubermensch' as not seeking to dominate or subjugate others, but becoming strong enough to avoid such by others. It is about empowerment of oneself so interactions are equal and hopefully mutually beneficial. That is my interpretation anyway.

So happy to see Nietzsche correctly described as harshly critiquing anti-semites. Saying Nietzsche is anti-Semitic is like saying a diabetic is anti-donut. The problem is with a more fundamental element: religiosity’s prescription of submission. He critiqued all major religions and religion-like social movements.

The problem was, his prediction of nihilism perfectly coincided with the socialist movement. A lot of Jewish beliefs were held hand and hand with Bolshevism (in fact they led the movement). This led to people like the Nazi’s, believing that the Jews were heading the hydra that was Nihilism. To be completely honest though, Hitlers main opponent were the banks. He believed that Jews had maintained a monopoly on currency, due to historical precedent. There’s a lot to unpack with why Nietzsche is looked at how he is. What’s clear is that he would have been against the Bolsheviks. Which starts a snowball effect

Good point. Also, something to think, for those who say "quit picking this apart": for someone new to Nietzsche, the dates are very important, and, if you see an error, what errors are unseen? /are there other errors?

I am not particularly familiar with whom Nietzsche is. Unfortunately, the few times this gentleman’s name came across, a negative tone towards his ideology soon followed. Therefore, I’d have to research who he is and what he stood for before I weigh in on the matter.

I have an issue with the video and it's the characterisation that the politics of hope (socialism) is about avoiding the painful truths of life when instead it sees the pain caused by an unjust and exploitative system and addressing the root cause by asking why there is pain to begin with. Pain exists to tell us what not to do again and if you're in chronic pain then it is a disability. If this is the case for people then it's not a big leap to use the same framework to analyse systems. Religion asks us to do nothing as paradise is there to those who wait and sacrifice ourselves to the meat grinder while socialism tells us that a better world can exist if we fight for it

You made the video, thanks for listening to the votes. That being said, could you also do videos on the other subjects which you mentioned?

I appreciate the simplicity of your presentation of Nietzsche and God is Dead. I have been trying to understand the depth of Nietzsche, beyond his quotes and am finding it very cerebral. You made things easier in this thought system. Also, appreciated great cartoon visuals.

God is dead implies we have lost our guardian and it is all up to ourselves. Would we search for another master or would we accept the challenge and do our best to our own ability? History has shown that what happened was that people found another less benevolent master in the state -- the rise of authoritarian regimes (communism/socialism, national socialism, fascism) that all argued for a strong state at the expense of the individual. Many are still not trusting themselves and crave the protection of a strong state, but that state might not be as benevolent as they think, or as competent as is necessary for real benevolence. Do we dare to trust ourselves more, grow up and be responsible as free individuals as our own masters?

I don't believe in any form of god or religion. I believe being nice to people and making earth a better place than it would be without me is the best way to live because if everyone provides added value to earth/society the world can only get better. I don't need religion to give me rules and authority. Religions don't evolve the way my view of the world around me does. Thank you for the video. Very inspiring

I understand Nietzsche's statement "God is dead" as a critic of christianism and the church. When people speak about God, they refer to an idol that they created in their minds. In this idol, they project their best characteristics, so the idol of god becomes a shadow of their own best abilities.

That was not criticism, that was an observation of the culture where religion, though it exists, does not shape the sociological and historical currents anymore. Nietzsche was excellent observer of his time, he saw where it could lead, he didn't like it. At analysis, he was unparalleled but he wasn't so successful in offering alternatives.

However, I do have some rather solid academic background and my opinions are not without basis. I didn't write master thesis in Nietzsche, true, but I know his work to a degree that is certainly above average mostly because what I know about him, I know in his context and in his relation to enlightenment, Hegel and romanticism. Besides that, Nietzsche is extremely difficult to interpret and sometimes, opinions are better and more adeguate reaction to his work than facts WHICH is not in itself a bad thing, and would not be a bad thing especially from his POV.

I don't agree with Nietzsche but I can respect his logic and reasoning. He uses some pretty advanced reason and logic to reduce extremely complex matters to their most simple form. But, when you do that, it compromises the subject matter's integrity. For example; this video attempted to boil down the basic simple forms of religion and missed the mark pretty badly. Not unreasonably so, it is just too complex to reduce it down to this level. Religion, specifically Christianity, does not view the world as terrifying and evil. It points out that evil can only exist in the heart of man and only has life due to our actions. We are compelled to do evil, but it calls us to strive to be better while also acknowledging that we will never succeed. But the message is supposed to be much more positive than this video's interpretation. Sure, there are harsh messages delivered in Christian Bible... but you have to read the message in its entirety to understand that in a sea of negative the point of the message was the tiny glimmer of hope. Moving on from Christianity, pretty much all major organized religions follow this. The "Pandora's Box" storyline - All this bad stuff is let out in the world because of one action, one mistake... and all that remains is hope. It's easy to pick pieces out of any one of these stories and decide that it delivers a message of hopelessness and despair. But, that's why you should never attempt to summarize such a deeply complex message into such small pieces. If you did that exact same thing with Communism you would end up with an entire generation of young American's falling in love with the Marxist theory and perceiving it to be a remedy to the current American political system and totally leaving out the part about one-hundred million deaths linked to Communism and the only system of Government that is actively engaged in slavery in the world today.... oh wait... o.0

just watched the above video. must confess, I have never actually read Nietzsche; thought him to be a radical, crazy atheist. I am a bit shocked. those view points are exactly the way I see things. My world-view.

There is a huge difference not addressed and that is a relationship with God by the Holy Spirit, which makes sense if that isn’t an aspect of someone’s life who made this videos. Also, Christianity glorifying the weak isn’t the point. Appropriate glory to God while acknowledging our weakness is not an inaccurate view of reality. Think of it this way: what control do we really have over reality? Do we cause fission in the sun, move quantum packets of light to earth millions of miles away, cause those (light) photons to excite the electrons in the chlorophyll, etc. There are countless amounts of processes going on around us we absolutely depend upon, but do not control by our “strength”, ability, so on. A Christian’s view thus naturally evacuates pride. More importantly, Jesus, who is King, died as lowly as one can die for the sakes of others, which is amazingly functional. If God can die for those He created, who didn’t merit this gift, then how can we treat our fellow person? It’s simply about doing right according to God’s command and example in Christ. If we are as generous as He says we need to be, imagine that world. And if He intends to bless us with His presence not only in Heaven, but here and now via the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, then we are never alone, all of our hardships can be lived with, with God right there in the mess with us, and we are incredibly motivated to genuinely help others who are in need. Morality, as directed by God, and shown the in the living example of Christ, is beautiful. It is exactly what our hearts are crying out for. God is not dead! He is alive. And He is alive in any who chose to receive Him. From experience, I can say there is nothing better.

I doubt Nietzsche held that very modern view of socialism (and somewhat of a caricature). Besides, when Nietzsche talked about socialism, he had in mind people like Eugen Dühring, not Marx and Engels, and obviously not Lenin nor Stalin (who were not even born when Nietzsche was alive). Marx's socialism is not pro-state; Marxism-Leninism (and derived ideologies such as Maoism) tends to give an important role to the state, but maintains that the state should, in the long term, be abolished; other forms of Marxism (such as orthodox Marxism) are more critical of the state. Besides, Marxism nowhere tells people to be kind and selfless; to the contrary, Marxism recognises that people are motivated by their own interests, most notably their class interests (this is one of the reason why Marx considered class struggle to be a historical force), and Marx advocated for the violent insurrection of the workers. Besides, Marx's socialism and Lenin's Marxism were very political, they did not imagine that socialism would come naturally with time, but that the working class should fight for socialism (at most, Marx predicted that the working class will fight again and again until it is victorious. Thus the potential inevitability of socialism comes from the inevitability of an active struggle of the working class, not passive waiting); there is no messianic idea (and it is not as if Nietzsche could ever have had a critique of socialism being messianic when socialism at the time had no understanding of historical processes). To the contrary, the pre-Marxist socialism of Nietzsche's time was more similar to modern social-democracy and more based on vague wishes of a cooperating and pacific world united on the universal recognition of people's shared humanity, and very moralistic arguments (while Marxism is explicitly not moralistic. Marx recognised, like Nietzsche, that moral values were historically situated and relative). Nietzsche characterisation of socialism as based on slave morality and similar to religion is coherent with contemporaneous brands of socialism (such as that of Eugen Dühring, who has also been heavily criticised by Engels), but applies less neatly to Marxism contrary to what the video suggests. I guess the video reflects more Stephen Hicks personal opinions than Nietzsche's.

@@sergemo Well, to justify your free accusations, you just pointed out that I made a mistake when I said they were not alive at the same time... as if that changed anything. Nietzsche in his last days was certainly not able to hear about Lenin and Stalin who were not even well-known at the time, not even in Russia. It does not change my argument. Besides, Nietzsche wrote most of his books when Lenin (and even more Stalin) was still a child.

The fact is that Nietzsche could not have even heard about Lenin and Stalin because they were children at the time or at most unknown people even in Russia. Yes, baby Lenin and baby Stalin were born when Nietzsche was alive; it does not change my point and does not change all of the others. Besides, it's not because I talk about Stalin, Lenin or even Marx that I support them. I just pointed out how misleading the video is.

Nietzche philosophy changed a lot throught his life, i think its important to mention at which stage of his life these ideas are from. he criticised and denounced some of his early work as he became the hammer.

He very much detested his idea of "amor fati" later on in his life, which I find funny, but when you get into why, then it's incredibly understandable.

“The more we learn, the less we know.” - i forgot, but question, Do we enjoy religion as a safety net for our fears of death? Or do we want religion, because we hope there’s more pleasure (and no pain) after death? I get it. We don’t like the idea of not knowing, yet, but I can tell this journey of knowledge is going to go so far that we actually lose knowledge of what truly “matters.”

Why should religion be a cure for fear of death, it seems to me that most Gods are very picky about who gets to go to paradise. Fear of death is fear of nothing, so there is nothing to fear. ;)

Hmm. 'Where are the men of courage... who can look at the tiger in the eye without flinching?' Nietzsche creates his own fantasy world (in reality, no human can look a tiger in the eye without flinching, except in a zoo of course) to replace what he (and many who surfed the waves of the time he was living) thought was a an already debunked fantasy (largely due to chronological snobbery), ie., the Judeo-Christian faith. Interestingly, the Faith is still alive and well (and in some place even thriving) until today.

Actually, lion-tamers, stage magicians and hunters face tigers all the time. Widespread religions do not prove their deities exist. That would require giant corpses and people driving flaming chariots across the sky and zapping unbelievers and potty-mouthed comedians and "gangsta "rappers with lightning, like the above dead giants. Pilots and astronauts would see the above charioteers, winged humanoids and castles on clouds. An early Soviet cosmonaut saw no Heaven in space. Oilfield workers, miners, etc. would frequently meet fairy tale dwarves, demons and ghosts in various netherworlds underground.

I understand the point of view. BUT God is NOT dead. He never was and never will be. God is with-out time. If reading the scriptures, God took a step backwards to observe and not make the same amounts of interference with the lifes we humans as he did in the old days. That doesent mean that God is gone, but demands that we take responsibility over our free will he gave us. If God would do all, we would not learn and prove ourselfs to be good. So many times people say "How or why do God allow this war happen?" - Then the real question is "Why do we do these things?" Why do we all ow it from our selfs to happen? God is like a parent who expects that we can take responsibility and learn from our mistakes and do better. That could be said is common sence!

I think it's reductive to label religion as one that glorifies weakness and need and withdraws from the world as it is. Religion engages the world as it is (broken, wicked, with some good in it). It doesn't "glorify weakness", it instead recognises the imbalance and lifts the weak up from the hole that the arrogant have shoved them in. Religion also makes assertions on what the cause and culmination of said imbalance may be. At its core, it tries to understand the world, not escape it; albeit arriving at different conclusions within itself (the different beliefs), and secular science/philosophy. Each one has differences in the way these things are asserted. Many claim that their "assertions" were received as direct messages from a supernatural being, some claim to have seen physical miraculous occurrences that lead them to believe, some arrive at their conclusions mostly from philosophical (and somewhat scientific) hypotheses. It's NOT simply fantasy/escapism

I do not have to face a world without God, because He is always with me. The decisions made by others to reject Him have no effect on my relationship with Him.

I think he seen the realities of good and evil in each party, you start to recognize the despicable acts against humanity, why division is so important to evil, so there will always be something to divide, while all have good ways, being used for evil intentions brings down all of them, the family way is important, it’s how we were created, no egg can survive on its own, we were created to be nurtured and taught, many organizations want something from you, want to separate you from your family for their own use, if you don’t comply they always use trickery, like a twisted rapist uses candy or subterfuge, when they can’t trick your people any more they start many wars and crimes against humanity and accidents ,drugs and organized drugs,many ,many ,many ,deaths caused from competition for land and customers, destroyed whole cities because someone else wants the area for some other use than the people that are in them are using them for! I have seen here in America,witnessed with my own eyes, some other group outside of the area do crimes to groups in the areas! Making each group think the other group is attacking it, so they’ll attack each other, so the third and fourth party can now come in and fix the problem that they actually created! When the finances run out for that they start all over again! Making a fortune on division and separation! They live rich on the suffering they’ve caused competing for a dollar on this planet while they decimate the natural order ,creating circles of confusion in the circles of life for their own gain! Destroying all that is created! Because it has no value to them! Most are prisoners of what is using them, the outer circles of confusion are usually made up of innocent people who have no idea of the inner circles true intentions ! I believe he saw this over and over in each group! Throwing them all away is an equally cruel act because there were good people with good intentions ,good hearts,helping humanity! We need each other! Making someone tired, poor, sick , wounded ,angry ,separated so you can herd them for something or somewhere else , despicable !

Except when the week make to the top and then prevent the strong from prospering (like the inheritance of a parent's company preventing a smarter poor individual education). Is it really the strong who hold power or is it the week who are propagated that they are strong?

I’ve been educating my sons without religion in their lives, they see it as something some people do and that is the end of it. They are not without guidance or orphaned as Nietzsche suggests.

Thank God I'm a Muslim and I believe in Allah who is 'Al Hayy" which means the 'Ever-living'. Also I like how he made it clear that when people left religion, they still had to enslave themselves to someone or something. Nice video.

I would rather not use the word "enslave" though. A person has to follow an ideology, to give purpose. If you keep your thought process clear and analytical, nothing can enslave you mentally.

Well I love your video, but I have to be critic to the final part when you talk about the life of Nietzsche, cause even if he was a nationalist (I don't know if he was actually one) he was aware of the idol state, not only in socialism but in modern society in general, he says to be aware of all those individuals that sell salvation, even in the state or nations, today we see people that praise the State god like. The other thing is his anti-Semitism, don't know if he actually was one or how "extreme" he was, in the version "thus spoke Zarathustra" I read, the author of the preface say that most of the anti-Semitism ideas in the work of Nietzsche was actually modifications that his sister made after he was dead.

Nietzche was from Switserland I believe. I understand the confusion as they speak the German and French language there.

Religion brings us the comfort we need in our darkest time of our life, it gives us a sense of hope and glad tidings, also it makes us more charitable and considerate. Sadly there are people who abuse religion.

did it tho? cause i see poverty and homelessness and hunger and children are asked to look away from the underpriviledged rather than help them! when someone is willing to help and create a change they are pinned as socialists or communists as the fear propoganda instead of teaching them these ideologies.... how can we say its working when last 10,000 years religion doesnt do anything but caused countless war deaths and suffering like slavery?

@@casualgambit674 That’s why I said it can be abused, many of us only see the cons of religion. You don’t judge a religion by it’s people but by it’s message because people are corrupt and even though they claim to follow it, they break its rules several times.

It actually sucks at grief counseling, in my experience. Survivors want sympathy, not a "pie in the sky" or "fire and brimstone" sermon. It also exploits the homeless by requiring them to convert for food and shelter, separating them from their families in sex-segregated shelters and discriminates against LGBT people, sex workers and substance abusers. It also uses a small business structure to treat an international social problem. It also cheated indigenous people of their land, converted them to sexist and homophobic customs and laws and kidnapped and murdered many Native American children in Canadian orphanages.

Never once have I felt that God is dead, I feel his presence every moment of everyday. God is there waiting for you to notice him. God is not dead, God is being ignored. Once society embraces him again society will improve once more.

Nothing can die that was not firstly alive.. If 'god is dead', the most likely prognosis is that it was never in existence..

„God is dead“ is a prayer to each and everyone to live up to their own moral beliefs - defined independently - instead of simply following/quoting somebody elses word. It’s also the ultimate insult to all hypocrites.

'Wrong or right', in other words 'morals', it doesn't come from any imaginary friend from the sky neither from any superstitious entity. Morals are a byproduct of having high intelligence, it is a mentality of treating others the same way you wanted to get treated. For example if you hurt others (wrong) you are gonna get hurt back; but if you are kind (right)to others, you will be treated back kindly by others. its simple, cults makes it complex.

Well, this is from 'The Parable of the Madman', which has much more to say. Here is part of what he wrote... Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!" -- As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter. Has he got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. The point isn't necessarily how this video appears to interpret it. The entire section of his book is much more expansive than this and much more powerful. It is not an epitaph for God, certainly. It is so much more. The point isn't so much that God is dead - or not - that is not provable either way and Nietzsche was smart enough to know that. The point is, now that you've gone and killed him in your mind and heart, what will you elevate in his place? What will be the inevitable outcome? Do yourself a favor; find and read the entire parable.

@@benjamintrevino325 The parable discusses the collective you, not you as an individual. His point was that if you've killed God, surely there is nothing you can't do then. You can drink up the seas, unmoor the Earth. Look around at the world, and see what people have substituted for God. The result is not good. The act of killing God from culture has been the removal of the archetype of the unblemished exemplar from our focus. That space is now filled by other things. Some of those things are quite corrosive to a culture if they are at the focus of our lives. Money. Sex. Power. Control over others. You get to see how this plays out every day. I think that Nietsche was making a point; God has been with us since the beginning - whether real or not. In an objective sense, you can never know. The unknowable is unknowable, and trying to prove or disprove God is pointless. You may as well go play with a nut. That said, the subjective experience was that God was most definitely real - look at how people live when they try to follow God's principles. Sure, lots of people make money off of religion and some religions do or have done horrific things - but that's human evil. It exists everywhere, even within organizations that do actual good. Having the image of the unblemished exemplar in your focus while you live life reduces the tendency towards evil, albeit imperfectly. Take the alternative - place evil at that focus. You do the math.

Tell me, what do you do when the best interests of the self run counter to that of the collective? Because, really, the collective is only an abstraction used to imperfectly describe a set of individuals. And those individuals are different.

I have not read the works of Nietzsche. I have only heard of the film series based upon the song "God's Not Dead" which I actually adore. To go along with your summary, then actually I do not see much of a difference between "religion" (inserting ✝) & socialism then in-terms of practice and idealism. It seems like the only difference is who is calling the shots: the church, who is mistaken for God Himself a lot, or the state?

Anyone who believes in a religion should be allowed to do so, but so should others that do not believe in any. Both should live how they want , However I do not think it's about lack of religion that's bringing the world down it's about how good is your heart, how you lead your life, your values.

I like your videos but sourcing Stephen Hicks and Ayn Rand are a turn in the wrong direction.

This philosophy(er) is the story of the prodigal son who demanded his inheretance from the father because his father was dead to him. He saw the demands of his father as fictitious and manipulative, a trick to prevent him from true living. So sad and quite deluded. He convinced himself that he was strong and exercising courage by denying his father's existence or love. Agape Love was/is not a quality of the strong but a device to weaken him. ☹️

Very interesting video. I did not grow up in the church. God showed up in my life in my late adulthood, and I have never been the same since. God is very much alive, but we choose to reject Him.

Reader, if you want a cool thing to do, next time you do anything, I want you to pay very close attention to everything and anything you do. To the steps you walk, the words you say, the words on the book in the corner of your vision, unconventional observations you make, do not dismiss anything, and pay deep and honest attention to everything (Carry around a journal, if that's your thing.) Do not let your mind wander with thoughts, and always trust that feeling of intuition you have deep down. How long you want to do it is up to you, but I would recommend a couple of days or longer. Do this correctly, and you'll have the potential to go down one of the best and deepest rabbit holes you'll ever encounter (this chance increases with the amount of days and how much attention you put in.) You may even see how this comment relates to this video.

I have to say I'm not really clear on his point. I don't get what he stands for or what conclusiuon he is trying make?
