Here is the uncut version of my Sober Synopsis on Leaving Las Vegas. This was fun to make and even more fun to watch, IMO. SICK DRUNK in this movie!

Great video on one of the most powerful films on addiction I have ever seen! Thanks for all your great videos, they help me hear the message, which I need to hear after, yes ashamed to say, 3 days sober after a week long relapse that almost sent me into the depths of total insanity, what I saw there in a way I wish I could remember, just small haunting nightmare inducing glimpsing memories of total despair and fear, my god the fear, like a week long panic attack almost. In a way you remember these dark blurred memories, from this relapse I remember being stood by my freezer drinking vodka straight out of the bottle, retching, being sick in the sink, trying to breathe, not to live but so I could at least get some more down, like you discussed in this video that you relate to in the similar scene in Leaving las Vegas. I relate to it very strongly as this was early last week. Was inclined to not write this but something compels me, that something is surrender. As I said I am 3 days sober, day 1 withdrawal was really bad, the shakes and heart ponding anxiety but I walked back into the rooms. My name is Alex and I am an alcoholic and I truly am powerless over alcohol. For anyone reading this thank you , but here's the kicker of this disease, I was one year 1 month sober and I thought to myself "One beer will be fine" 2 days later I am at my freezer barely concious, shaking and throwing up, but trying to get some vodka down my throat. The ashes of the insanity of active alcoholism, whilst you are sober, look dead and extinguished, but if an alcoholic has just one drink, it's like pouring gasoline on the seemingly dead ashes only to realise under those ashes is a smouldering fire!. Thanks for your work sir and respect and peace from the UK Cheers Alex One day at a time

"O'Brien committed suicide by gunshot at his Beverly Hills apartment on April 10, 1994, two weeks after learning that his novel, Leaving Las Vegas, was to be made into a movie. His father says that the novel was his suicide note. Two more of his novels were published posthumously" -per Wikipedia

This is the one movie I've seen that does a proper job of showing the alcoholic and especially when he is in need of a drink. Movies usually do not show the actual depths of sickness we go through when we do not get a drink in time, when we are looking for that drink to stop the shakes and the sickness. I have always hated those movies where an obviously desperate alcoholic merely 'stops' drinking and gets up to even have a shower and get a job. It's not possible to do that when you have been drinking alcoholically. You do NOT merely stop and then go back about your life.

I agree, it's hard to explain and even harder for a listener to understand. This movie does a fine job of illustrating the desperation of an alcoholic in the grips of the disease.

Hey Mr. James, really enjoyed your very solid review of the film. I empathize completely with your assessment of this film's VERY many triggers. It turned my stomach several times and haunted me for a couple days after watching it a few days ago... I'm also a recovering addict: I was a HORRIBLY bad binge drinker and would either blackout entirely or turn into a complete horse's ass: I once actually fell out of my car in front of my nieces school with her whole classroom watching from across the street. I was there to pick her up: utterly disgraceful, revolting stuff... Alcoholism also runs deep in my family- my grandma had full blown alcohol psychosis and died of Alcoholism, and I've seen firsthand heavy drinkers strain cigarettes out of half empty beers from the night before into a plastic cup first thing in the morning just to stop the shakes. It doesn't get much lower than that... Anyway, happy to hear of your recovery; keep up the good fight and the great content! 👊
