I don't think it is right to say that Greeks "occupied" Ukraine. Greek ancestors spread from the shores of ancient Persia (the name Greeks gave Iran) millennia ago. At the times when the weather was cold, the Mediterranean would become more shallow and the Greek fishermen didn't need large vessels to cross it; they "island hopped." Eventually, Greek fishermen and tradesmen established colonies all over the Mediterranean shores, the Black sea being a part of it. So they are more like Ukrainian natives rather than imperial settlers. Stalin drove them away into Kazakhstan together with Tatars. Greeks were in Anatolia also long before the Turkic peoples reached it. In the later centuries, they built fortresses in Crimea and named many of them themselves. Theodosia, Sudaq, etc. They called the Black sea "Hospitable" - Euxeinos Pontos (Εὔξεινος Πόντος) for some strange reason. When the Ottomans conquered Crimea, they often kept the Greek city names but named lots of rivers there in Turkic (Crimean Tatar). The word Crimea is a really strange linguistic corruption; the real name is a Tatar word, Krym. This peninsula is actually one of the oldest human habitations in Europe, even Neandertals lived there. There are so many incredibly ancient caves which Ukrainian authorities let to ruin. Unlike the rest of Ukraine, it has an amazing semitropical climate being protected by the tall mountains. What is never really mentioned is that, in its core, Ukraine territories are (like Spain) barely inhabited as they are situated on the Eurasian Steppe (Grasslands) where the climate is severe and not very suitable for agriculture (no trees to hold the soil and extreme temperatures). So, historically speaking, the main part of Ukraine has never been "civilized" and mostly inhabited by the semi-nomads from the Central Asia and Anatolia who raided each other periodically. Main reason it is absent from the maps. If the war cuts Ukraine away from its Black Sea coastline--it's economic future will be bleak. Achilles is a mythological hero and so was the Battle of Troy probably. :)

This is, by far, the best intro into the Russian-Ukrainian historical relationships for the uninitiated. I will buy Nicolai Petro's book. Thank you for such a wonderful erudite guest. I have never heard that the name Ukraine, Окраина (which literally translates as the land around or just land) is of Polish origin. Kraj (Край) has a double meaning in Russian: it means a geographical territory and it also means the end of something, a border. But Край is a Russian word not Polish. (Krawędź is Polish). Strange, indeed. A great Soviet writer, born in Kiev, Mikhail Bulgakov, wrote a brilliant play, The White Guard (quite famous in Russia), which everyone interested in the origin of the Ukrainian nationalism should read. The play takes place in 1918 when Kiev was occupied and reoccupied dozens of times by the various WWI warring entities, the local terrorist bands, and the Ukrainian People's Army under Semion Petliura (a fascinating and controversial Jewish socialist/anarchist) who they all hoped would liberate them from all their oppressors and establish a an independent Ukrainian nation state. Bulgakov describes the terrible oppression the Ukrainian peasants lived under, suffering from their Polish overlords and the German military's physical abuse, all the while fearing the advancing Red Army the most. It is very clear from Bulgakov's firsthand account that Kiev was a grand Russian city, that Ukrainians living in its countryside spoke a Russian peasant dialect, and that they passionately loved their Окраина.

There was Novgorod before that, from which Kievan princes have come. All this fairy-tale about Kiev being the source of Rus civilization has been written in 19th centuty. There was no country named Kievan Rus at that period, there were many small Rus princedoms, and Kiev was just one of them,.

Kiev at the time of their arrival was a Slavic city inhabited by Polyane, one of the Rus tribes, and they were paying tribute to Khazars. Present day Ukraine has many different peoples living within its borders because it has the lands formerly belonging to Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Austria. There used to be hundreds of thousands of Jews living there too, but they had exterminated them in 1920s and 1040s.

In Greek ‘Ukraine’ means something Very Different which leads to a completely different line of thinking… or lines if you wish. I haven’t verified that Greek meaning’s Implied History yet but it is fascinating and no doubt controversial and complex. Therefore I won’t mention it here. But it’s on the Paris Sparrow personal page under search terms like Ukraine and Herodotus.

Find Ukraine on any 16-19 centuries map, please. A nation that has never had any elites, only soldiers, raiders, and peasants, does not qualify to be called a nation. Or a People. By the Polish landlords yes, and Germans, but way, way before the Russian revolution. No one oppressed anyone in the Soviet Ukraine (except along the class lines). And who are these 'ethnic' Ukrainians? You really have no idea what you are talking about. Learn some Soviet history, my friend, before you offer an argument or an opinion. "Anti-Ukrainism?
