When I drove 18-wheelers across country I always wondered about the geology of the many rock formations, with all their twists, bends and colors. Now I know a great deal more all due to your careful, entertaining and informative broadcasts. Thanks for all you do here on this channel. I will look forward to any stream you put out.

The times I've driven cross-country, I've wondered the same. It's a shame that there is so much soil overburden on the Great Plains, because far below those dead-flat expanses are old island arcs and wonderful things. It made the trip more fun wondering what the geological picture was in places I've visited/driven through.

Boy Tim you got Feynman/Nick right. In July 2015 when I first met Nick I complimented him comparing to RPF. Nick hadn’t heard of him. Few days later I Primed him several Feynman books….but correct so so many similar style and those “quick asides “ on Education, the world, students, life, etc. I often feel Nick is channeling Feynman. And that is A great and wonderful thing.

Yes, I just found them this morning... and now I have something else that will consume more of my time. Thank you, Nick; more things to learn.

The 1959 earthquake almost made my siblings and myself into orphans. My parents took a rare no-kids vacation to Montana to visit family and visit places my father had done surveying as a young man. We were all sent to summer camps or relatives. They were expected to camp in that campground the night of the earthquake, but had gotten ahead of schedule and were there the night before. As the news of the buried campground spread, there were tense hours until my parents were able to call from West Yellowstone where they had spent the night. How different life would have been for we five kids!

My grandpa was also expected to be in that campground the night of the earthquake but the night before while they were camping there, his dog couldn't settle down and sleep. He was howling and whining all night long. They thought something was wrong with him so they drove back to Butte very early the morning before the earthquake. I wouldnt be alive today had his dog not been with him!

Kind Sir, I've only just discovered your channel and you need to know you are a joy! I have always been interested in geology or a million other fascinating things all over this amazing planet. Had I a teacher like you, that explains things so clearly and in such an excited way (and wasn't a headstrong teenager who knew everything already😉) I may have done better in school! Ha! Well stated. The "rant" was more of a "You're trashing my hero's" story. Stories tell a tale that can be understood by anyone and if done right you don't need to do the math to know how things will balance out. The best professors are the best story tellers.

This guy is so awesome. He's so passionate and makes tough concepts easy to understand.

Great I can finally make comments. First I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤ for these video casts! I am really enjoying them and appreciate something that does not focus on US politics or this dreadful virus! I am in my 70's and live in San Diego, CA. I am also learning! I got a Delorme atlas and Gazette of WA. state as well as Marli Miller's roadside geology of Washington, and Glacial Lake Missoula and it Humongus Floods by David Alt, so that I can follow along afterward finding locations either during or after your livecast! You are doing a great public service for us. I have been in Washington 20 yrs and 30 yrs. after Mt. St. Helen's. So I have seen the Olympic Pennsulia, and the mt. St. helens area as well as the Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah falls and East from Portland to Astoria and thus across the bridge to the Olympic Pennsulia all the way around to Bremmerton. I drove through Portland in 2017 and saw Mt. St. Helens for the first time--a good view and not just pictures--and I was surprised. She's really been truncated.

I've never been to the Northwest, however I found Nick on KZread and I have to say (this coming from a person who went to different colleges, over 9 years,) that Nick is an awesome Proffesor. I took geology 101 when I was in school for structural engineering. Don't remember what got me to nicks channel, but it is a staple for me when driv8ng my semi truck

I'm over here near Smith Rock and the Three Sisters, and I've always wondered about the big basaltic lava flows over here. I don't think it's part of the same big "german chocolate cake" that's the centeral Washington basaltic lava flows since it's up in the mountains.

I have always thought so much of those who worked in the field of geology, my uncle was blessed to work for the USGS, and was one of those “old men” who worked overseas for the government. His ultraviolet light, hammer, and radiation counter fascinated me. Even though I had a chance to hold his hammer I didn’t lose it. As I watch your programs you bring back memories of lectures on rocks of our area, nice job Nick.

Thanks Nick for producing these excellent and diverse studies of geology- as a geology major and USGS employee from the 70's now living in the southwest I've always looked at earth as a history book even though its flat ha,ha. love the lessons.

Could this guy possibly be any better ? When I see that much competence ...it inspires.. bravo sir....bravo.

I appreciate your efforts Nick. Your enthusiasm for geology is infectious and reaches a broad demographic. I have come to learn about the Pacific North West geology largely inspired by your efforts. I live in southern Australia. It is hard to imagine two more contrasting geological regions. Here it is very old and weathered with very little current geological activity. I would like to make a suggestion for your future videos. If all it takes is your phone then why not do a video on a different location each time. Perhaps one on each state and how the local geology relates to the broader landscape. It may inspire you to look further afield beyond North America. This approach can build a broader picture which few others seem to do in these modern times of specialisation. It also looks like you enjoy learning as much as teaching which I regard very highly. Thank you.

PS - I have watched your videos for years, have been thrilled with the live stream, and feel that you are one of the finest teachers ever to grace a university. Nick, as always enjoy your talks. First time I have gotten you at home. Keep up the good work and information for us about the changes in our earth.

When i was in the Army, I drove through Ellensburg to the Yakima firing center. It was always a scenic drive. Too bad I am not still stationed in that area as I most certainly would have stopped by to visit you. As an air traffic controller I became good friends with someone keenly interested in geology like myself and we scoured that whole area for interesting finds. we found Opel way out in the desert and fossilized wood. In the mountain areas we found Amethyst and scepter crystals. That whole area gave me a good enthusiastic start in geology. Today I am collecting meteorites and I am finding glacial period fall meteorites laying in gravels and materials deposited during that time period. No soot on them but they do have that tell tale stinky soot smell, gravels also contain so many surprises like you can find anything and everything. Thank you for your awesome videos that continue to fuel my interests. Your an awesome Teacher and I pay close attention to your videos.

@@garymingy8671 Well that stardust is much bigger than dust and my biggest find to date weighs 355 pounds. the state record in minnesota is just only 33 lbs. How do I know if they are meteorites ? well there is a list i go thro to qualify them and it includes outer crust material slightly different than inner material due to metamorphic changes from heat to surface conditions in melt flow and magnetic properties. A whole slew of conditions must be met before I will consider something a meteorite. keeping in mind that some will break all the rules and its usually the rock thats totally out of place from the surrounding geology.

I have just discovered your fantastic presentations in May 2023. I have been enjoying catching up. I think it is a great testimony to your knowledge and style that so many people of all ages come out to listen to you. I wish you had taught my Physical Science classes in WV (1967) I'm catching up now. 🙂

I wish I had you as a teacher in grammar and high school....I was enthralled with local NYC geology. I had a rock set and special rock microscope....and wandered around Queens section of NYC and the Adirondacks. I wasn't into sports..geology was my favorite.

Don't be too harsh on them, they're having enough trouble dealing with their ignorance and knowing that they've wasted so much of their education time doing stuff that doesn't matter! My wife's 5th great uncle was a guide for the Hayden party. Also, the first game warden of Yellowstone. To this date the NPS awards regional ranger awards in his name. Harry S. Yount. Mountain Man, Civil War veteran, trapper. First attempt to climb Gran Teton but cartographers got separated.

People feed on misinformation....we have seen this in society as well as in geology. Not all people do, but you can see how easy it is for people to latch onto misinformation and spread it. Nick provides facts. YVO provides facts. Facts are their job. Collecting correct and accurate data is their job.

My family and I will be traveling out to Wyoming from Pittsburgh, PA, in June for a wedding then heading up to Yellowstone since we’re going to out that way! We are looking forward to it, and I can’t to learn more about the geology of Yellowstone since it’ll give me a new perspective while we’re there!

Hi! I'm new, & really enjoyed all of your really interesting info.

I really hate that I only just recently discovered your talks on KZread, so I've got a lot of catching up to do here in South Carolina. I have to admit, though, that these wonderful presentations make me a tad jealous, since we don't have anything like the amazing geology of the Pacific Northwest here in my home state, and certainly no volcanism more recent than 250 MA, give or take. I've never had the opportunity to visit Yellowstone, or any of the Northwestern US, that is home to this remarkable and dynamic geology. That said, I think I can pinpoint the source of the irritating "USGS is lying about volcanic eruptions/earthquakes etc.", especially here on KZread. There is a KZread user, whom some of your followers have probably encountered on here, who has millions of followers, who claims that there are currently volcanoes erupting all over the US and that "the government" is hiding this fact, covering it up for some reason or another...as IF you could hide a volcanic eruption of even a minor scale. He's asserted that Sunset Crater in AZ, for example, has recently erupting, and that the USGS lied and claimed that it was just a controlled burn-off of dry vegetation. He has claimed that there are recently-active volcanoes in GEORGIA(the state) and used Photoshop doctored Google Earth images to show "craters" and "calderas" in northeastern GA, among other claims, and his followers just eat it up. Any comments that dispute his claims get removed. He has repeatedly claimed that USGS is lying about activity at Yellowstone to conceal the "fact" that they "know the Big One is about to erupt". No reason is ever given as to WHY "the government" would lie about these things or what benefit they'd derive from doing so or just how one would go about hiding an erupting volcano from the public, though.

Don't downplay the Geology of the East coast, it is as rich with terrane accretion, fault systems, uplift and erosion as the West coast is, and rocks don't care about age, the evidence is written in stone so to speak. The fault system that generated the 7.0 earthquake in 1886 is less known than any major fault system east of the Rockies as well, Nick has beautiful vistas in Washington state and we on the East coast have trees and Mosquitoes, but the rocks have a story to tell to someone willing to listen to them, Chances are you live on the Carolina Superterrane, formed with Avalonia, whose rocks underlay most of England and extend to Spain and within Europe into the Balkans. The existance of Avalonia and its Carolina counterpart is still something that a Geologist can make a name for themselves in, as the timeline for much of Carolina Superterrane is yet poorly known. And unlike Yellowstone, the Fault underneath Charleston is a present danger to those ignorant of its history.

I live in central Europe, the alps are pretty near. But! There is so much to be found just outside ones house, I don’t know it there is an area anywhere that is „boring“ in a geological sense. If we‘d know of such a place, we‘d know it as a dump for nuclear waste 😅

I don't think anyone will argue Yellowstone is probably the most efficiently cooled super volcano......as long as there is coolant in the radiator there is probably not much to worry about outside the park.......
