Nick Adderley: Chief constable of Northamptonshire Police found guilty of gross misconduct

The chief constable of Northamptonshire Police Nick Adderley, who was suspended for lying about his military record has been found guilty of gross misconduct.
He has been suspended on full pay since October for exaggerating his own rank and length of service and lying about his naval achievements - including implying that he served in the Falklands War - despite being 15 when the conflict broke out in 1982.

genuinely, northants have left themselves in an awkward situation now that they'll probably have to redo lots of peoples vetting checks, not that I feel bad for them getting caught taking shortcuts and hoping noone would ever say anything. Wonder how many other people in the force are about to get caught out for similar things albeit at a much lower level than having claimed to be fighting in a war at 15

As a UK officer - we aren't all like that. I love the way the media and often the public portray that we're all liars or all bad people... I earn around 1/3 as much as he did after 7 years policing in London and wouldn't dream of doing what he did, nothing more disrespectful. Believe me, most officers are good people. There's always going to be bad ones. I worked with a colleague some years back who came across as a lovely chap, but behind closed doors there was other stuff going on that came to light, he was eventually found guilty at crown court, imprisoned and sacked, and too right. When we all found out about what he had done we were rightly appalled and pleased he got sacked and imprisoned.

    1) It wasn't a criminal investigation - it's civil. A misconduct proceeding is a civil one not a criminal one. 2) Background checks are completed at the point of application to the force, and at ongoing points throughout the years of service thereafter, depending on the level of security clearance required for their position. Someone of his position would require more checks and more frequently than someone like myself as a lowly "PC" who earns 1/3 as much as he did. I have no respect for him either after this, i'm glad stuff like this comes to light.

I was once subjected to one when someone I had non-direct contact with (only via telephone and email) decided to take their own life. They gave me no indication they would do it, and just did it. I spent 18 months under investigation as a result, and 2 years down the line am still subject to limitations as a result of that investigation. The initial investigation was lead by the IOPC and then passed to my local PSU to deal with. People sit there and make all coppers out to be crooks, but believe me that really isn't the case. I have done nothing but work hard and try my upmost. People like him just ruin any reputation and make everyone else look bad.

Our best example of a 'Walt' politician would be the former leader of UKIP in the European Parliament who, when he wasn't too busy hitting his fellow MEPs, claimed all sorts of achievements which proved to be false. Also Andrea Loathsome (sic) and IDS were guilty of overstating their levels of achievements and qualifications, according to reports, things they've never actually denied since.
