Amazing glide ratio! They took advantage of ground effect too

If the two chase boats had stayed just under each wing it would have gone on forever kind of like a moving wave. that's how efficient this aircraft is. Wow.

@@thedave7760 that is an incredible thought! Especially if they had a Bimini Top.

@@thedave7760 Probably they are forbidden from doing so, but if it was allowed maybe they could just add a large deflector plate to one of the boats and make the largest walkalong glider ever. Essentially slope soaring on a moving slope.

@@tylerrandolph6193 what is a Bimini top? Thank you! Edit: I assume that you mean one of those fabric canopies, right? But it would need to be slanted to make the standing wave, right?

AMAZING!!! A wonderful design and EXCELLENT engineering. Well done!!!
A perfect glider, a perfect pilot, ... and a helpful groundeffect! Welldone!
Oh. My. Goodness, congratulations to the whole team, what a wonderfully splendid achievement. I watched all 451 graceful meters with a huge grin upon my face
Perfect conditions + epic design. Superb!
Great job..very well done! 👍
Excellent design, good launch. Good flight by a trained pilot. Good crew.
Beautiful wow 🎉🎉 that was awesome 👌 👏 👍
Fantastic job, well deserved🥳
So amazing and impressive. A massive achievement.
very nice, neatly flown. also not to forget the builders, well done! respect! Greetings from the Netherlands! Rob
Her tension at the launch was so palpable yet positive. Love it when the pilot/aviator utters 'This is fun!" :)
Beutifull. Good work
Bravo, excellent, belle machine et bon pilote 😀
Thanks thats Brilliant!! Congratulations!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉.
Incredible job team!

Absolutely amazing 👍
nice 60 km ,amazing team support
Amazing. I just wonder if those boats to the left n right didn't disrupt the ground effects of the air flow being that close to the tips of the wings.
Wow,amazing team support
Wow that's a long glide over such a low altitude.
well made glider!! well done!! amazing glide distance.

flugtag has more rules as per max wing span and length, this glider would not be allowed to participate.
Wow, that was very impressive.
Where does this competition take place????
Impressive! Beautiful sailplane. Beautiful, graceful glide. Congratulations! Now that I know it glided 451.12 m, please tell me how high above the water surface was the launch?
@user-ft8fl2nl3w

@@user-ft8fl2nl3w Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. So, if the sailplane leaves the ramp some 10 m above the surface of the water, then it follows its average Lift-over-Drag ratio (L/D) is about 45.1. And that is pretty darn good for a sailplane. Makes this effort even more impressive. Congratulations and best wishes.
@HotelPapa100

@@dr.gudmundssonaircraftdesign Add another 1.5 m or so for how high the plane was carried. Still, that's a damn good ratio. The best gliders are a tad above 60 today.
@okayoshi3347

Even the highest quality gliders will not be able to achieve a glide ratio of 60 in this competition where the initial speed is low.
Congrats Guys....fantastic
That was great!
Lindo lindo lindo, parabéns!
Wow! Super impressive achievement.
Best Flutog ever.
Time to bust open Flugtag! Awesome achievement. Other than a tiny bit of weight displacement, it looks like the pilot had no control inputs. Very stable design! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
@TDOBrandano
Жыл бұрын
I think the pilot controls pitch by weight shifting, and maybe they have some rudder control via pedals. The wing curve will easily give you roll control with rudder only, but as long as the flight path is straight enough adding rudder control might just add complexity and drag. I also think that the wingspan is too large for the Flugtag rules, so the record there will require some other design approach.

@@TDOBrandano Thanks for your response. Looks like quite an achievement to me. I was a PPL some years back but now enjoy RC. May get back into flying - including gliders - in the next few years. Amazing! Now improve the structure and add controls and they will have a beautiful aircraft
How far did she fly? I didn’t understand what they said
Imagine doing this with a controllable glider on a slope with this glideratio. Even with the slightest wind breeze it stays airborn for days

I like these gliders better than the pedal plane competitions!
I knew it would got far but that was incredible! Wish I knew Japanese.
Very impressive.
着水後まできれいでした。
I have an idea for a launching system that would send that plain to the stratos.
For some perspective - this is a video from 2021, with an amazing result. It was recently (2023) beaten at the same place with a similar shaped glider to a little over 500m. The platform height is 10m, that would imply these gliders have a staggering glide ratio of 1:50. The best commercial gliders max out at about 1:44. (this attempt's glide ratio is 1:45). . Overall well done in pushing glide technology forward!!!
@delboy1727
Жыл бұрын
Actually the glide ratio of the best commercial glider is around 1:70, and that isn't taking account of ground effect, which obviously benefitted the effort shown in this video.
@quinncide
Жыл бұрын
@@delboy1727I was going to say, with such a wingspan that glider spent *most* of the flight in ground effect. It would take a lot more calculating to determine its glide ratio than simply distance divided by height. Still an interesting craft. I would love to see its true performance with a much higher launch and significantly longer out-of-ground effect flight.

@@delboy1727 The top 'commercial' glider is the JS3 with a glide ratio of 1:55. Never heard of any commercial glider with a 1:70 ratio..... I'm a glider pilot in the market for a glider... I'd gladly save more money and buy a 1:70 ratio instead.... if such a beast existed.

@@markplain2555 OK, maybe not commercial, but a glider does exist that is close to 70:1 glide ratio, though from other commetns I believe it is a prototype. My original comment was meant to dispel the comment that 'commercial' gliders max out at 44:1, which is clearly not true.

i wonder why they dont build a small curve to the downside on the edge of the wing? so the wind can push the plane upwards? a small curve or a bit curve downward on the edge back of the wing?
@qian333
Жыл бұрын
There is no energy source to support the rise. You will sacrifice speed to allow the rise. The only strategy here is to use the energy of dropping height as much as possible to battle the wind resistance at the most efficient speed.

Look at the arifoil shape of the wing, all the right stuff is done there. The wing is alway pushing upwards otherwise the glider would accelerate downwards wouldn't it..?
