The 7 Caldicott Principles 1. Justify the purpose of using personal info. 2. Only use it when absolutely necessary. 3. Use the minimum that is required. 4. Access should be strictly on a need to know basis. 5. Everyone must understand their responsibilities 6. Understand and comply with the law. 7. The duty to share can be as important as patient confidentiality.

There are eight Caldecote principles, the eighth, one being: 8) inform patient and service users about how the confidential information is used.
