I'm brazilian. I did some research in the internet and discovered many interesting things about samba. I was very curious to find out why what they call "International Samba" has become so uncharacteristic compared to the real Brazilian samba. Samba was created in Brazil and its origin is the drumming brought by slaves of people of African origin, mixed with European rhythms such as Polka, Waltz, among others. Initially, the dance parties of slaves of people of African origin in the state of Bahia were called "samba". The first manifestations of samba date back to the 1910s. As a musical genre, samba is influenced by batuque, lundu or polka and is even associated with maxixe. "Samba de Gafieira", which is the original samba de salón in Brazil, is the result of several influences, so it's important to know each one of these influences to understand the creation of the original Samba de Gafieira, its basis, and then understand its evolution with over time: Lundu, Jongo, Partido Alto, Capoeira, Samba do Malandro, Maxixe and Waltz. I saw a video that made me understand that it was not the Europeans who robbed us, but that the white Brazilian elite that appropriated the samba of the blacks and glamorized samba by eliminating its African influence and that it was this glamorized version that the government and the Brazilian elite of the time passed on to the Europeans (I think it's because they considered the original samba vulgar to dance in European halls at the time). Therefore, it's not Walter Laird's fault either, since he frequented the salons of the Brazilian elite and not the environment where the original samba was danced (in the street and bars with the people, mainly where it was frequented by Brazilian black people). In my opinion, as samba is an Afro-Brazilian culture, its elements with African influence cannot be removed. In my opinion, after removing the African influences, the resulting samba that originated what is now called "International Samba" was more similar to the old maxixe than to the true Samba de Gafieira. There were two versions of maxixe: the original, which is more erotic, ill-behaved and sensual and danced by the lower classes, and the version adapted for the elites, which is a more well-behaved version (the one that was passed on to foreigners). As maxixe influenced samba, these two versions of maxixe probably also generated the two versions of samba de salón: a more sensual one and a more well-behaved one, and generated the mess we are currently witnessing. See what the true maxixe was like, bolder and considered more vulgar at the time: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o2tss6VtZ8y2j9I.html Wellington Lopes & Sheila Aquino Maxixe (ancestor os Samba Gafieira) - Paris 2013-01-05: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lIKbkqitdLCWXag.html (I think this could be the version influenced by the maxixe danced by the lower classes of Brazilian society in the early 20th century, as it's more daring and sensual than the "behaved" version danced by the elites). kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKpoyaSdaarbkqQ.html "Behaved" version danced by the elites: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y2R8tpqsY8mZmrQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ea2HrKSHaa7KnNo.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gnd_ztx-gq_HgtI.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3p3mrujeZvHfc4.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGiGo8pxgsa6aNY.html In the first half of the video below it shows the dances/songs that influenced "Samba de Gafieira" and in the second half it shows the real Brazilian ballroom samba (Samba de Gafieira) kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHaFm7Nxo9fTZ6g.html. As a Brazilian, I don't recognize the way they are dancing as samba. Samba is of Brazilian origin. The dance is beautiful, but I wouldn't call it samba. This song/rhythm is not samba. Samba is not swinging just like that, it has a whole technique. The steps can be the same for men and women, but there is one big difference: the woman swings more with her hips, while the man just does the leg movements without moving his hips much. It's no use for a person to know how to reproduce the steps of samba if he doesn't know how to dance to the rhythm and shake his body correctly, because samba is all of this set in a right balance. To give you an idea, there are many Brazilians who don't know how to samba, only those who really like this style make an effort to learn it. If you really want to learn samba, you might need to learn it here in Brazil or look for a Brazilian dance school with Brazilian teachers. Note that the posture of Brazilian dancers is relaxed and their movements are fluid. Samba is the whole set: music, steps, rhythm, swinging, relaxed posture and fluid movements. It's not samba if the music isn't samba either. . In Brazil there are the types of samba below, which are the main ones: CARNIVAL SAMBA from Rio de Janeiro (SAMBA NO PÉ - individual dance): kzread.infoqkiUns5jwic kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqaFpsuJYM3Rfpc.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/rH6r1qmve7jWl6Q.html - Note: some of these moves are only for women (if men do these moves they will be considered gay by Brazilians). kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZniOkpKBcpjAhpM.html - men mostly dance samba with this movement, as they only accompany the women, who are the true queens of samba. The songs of the samba schools that are played in the sambodromo during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro are too fast for those who want to learn samba (Samba no Pé), so I recommend learning first with slower sambas like below, for example, that show various rhythms and of various speeds, being a challenge for the apprentice dancers to capture the rhythm and dance correctly in that rhythm.: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mm2Zmq9mp723d8Y.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqalqtuCktjOYtI.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gXiplbGfl9HZo7A.html GAFIEIRA SAMBA (couple samba): kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGhq2MNrXbqYZ84.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIh9x6udhsWyj9o.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2t6y6-HnrnVe7Q.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaCh2tiMnN2zYLg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6eVuaSidruvo9Y.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mayVzrmzZqipkbw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYJ-18ZrqqnMY9I.html There are specific songs for dancing Gafieira Samba, because the rhythm and speed are different from the carnival samba. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gXlklKSGY9exldY.html www.youtube.com/@GafieiraPraDancar/videos These KZread channels teach you how to dance Gafieira Samba: www.youtube.com/@CanaldoSambadeGafieira/videos www.youtube.com/@tematicoscosta/search?query=gafieira SAMBA REGGAE from Bahia state (individual dance): kzread.info/dash/bejne/YqinuMiMkdbeqKw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqRqj7qAYafJdZc.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/go6HlJSkgpaogaw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYSAtbh7gri8npM.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYCf1KeSpaacYco.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6OBtdCNkqaoj7g.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaSkzbCOlZy3gLA.html Samba Reggae Songs: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIOLy9GyaNS5YJc.html&start_radio=1&rv=nOWioy8qS04&t=34 Realize that samba reggae from Bahia state is very different from the samba drumming of the carnival from Rio de Janeiro, but both have an African influence. Samba Reggae: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ent504-TZae-drw.html Carnival Samba: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIRp1JSwmZyekaQ.html Don't mix Samba no Pé steps with Samba Reggae steps as each one has its own rhythm, which often don't match each other. There is also SAMBA-ROCK (couple samba), which is a variation, created in the state of São Paulo: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2ip2c2HkpXaeMY.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoGrtbiroNrchaQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJx2waWhlZC3e5c.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3mhssGaktmvdKQ.html www.youtube.com/@SambaRockCultural/search?query=passo%20a%20passo Samba-Rock Songs: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqSVmc6ccZPclrQ.html Many people learn the steps of samba, but dance outside the rhythm of the drums and the other instruments (called "batucada"). Brazilians who know samba well know when the person is not following the rhythm of the batucada correctly, that they are dancing slower or faster than the rhythm of the music.

@@Nguoitinhmuadong85 I questioned several people who practice dance sport and one of them replied: "As far as I know International Samba has been danced in dancesport competitions for at least 60 years. Many would say that Walter Laird was one of the first who described Technique of Latin American Dancing (for dancesport competitions)" I did some research around here and discovered many interesting things about samba that I was also unaware of. I was very curious to find out why what is called "International Samba" has become so uncharacteristic compared to the real Brazilian samba. Samba originates from the influence of African culture and the poor at the time. I saw a video that made me understand that it was the white Brazilian elite that appropriated the samba of the black people and glamorized samba by eliminating the erotic, ill-behaved and sensual way of dancing and that it was this glamorized version that the government and the Brazilian elite of the time passed on to the foreigners (because they considered the original samba vulgar to dance in European halls at the time). Therefore, it's not Walter Laird's fault either, since he frequented the salons of the Brazilian elite and not the environment where the original samba was danced (in the street and bars with the poor people, mainly where it was frequented by Brazilian afro-origin or Afro-descendants). I sent to 02 persons who practice dance sport an email with all my research telling the whole story of Samba, from its beginning. If you're interested, tell me your email so I can send it to you too.
