Ngorongoro Crater Lion vs Buffalo

On a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater and came across a pride of Lions going after a Buffalo. We were 100' away, the video does not do this justice.

everybody relax a bit - those guys were not a 'film crew', but some tourists that got lucky to witness an encounter between lions and buffalos. they zoomed as much as they could, and they can't move closer, because for protection of the animals they are not allowed to leave the track, which is a very good thing. so maybe simply be happy that those guys did film it, and did bother to share

Love from Ontario, Canada! What a show by the buffalo herd! Lives up to its reputation! Fiercely loyal to their injured comrade till the comrade decides that it is enough of his time on earth. The fallen buffalo was perhaps their herd leader of the yore. Must have seen its prime. Must have warded off many enemies to protect its charges throughout its life. We have not seen a buffalo herd to keep their defenses up for such a long duration. Hats off to the buffalo. Go Buffalo Bills. The next Super Bowl is yours.

A win-win. The lions live another day, the buffalo suffered minor casualties & Tanzania gets to keep a diverse ecosystem (without which there'd be less tourism, less $$ for imports, and so the locals would have to cull all the local buffalo anyways). Of course the lions get hated on, because they're at the top of the food chain. But just look how brave they are, taking on a much larger sized herd of much larger sized animals.

Amazingly well done video. Again, I noticed the lions are using the safari vehicles. One for shade and two as protection from the buffalo. One nice thing about this video is showing how well organized the lions are. Wouldn't it be awesome if someone figured out how to train lions to round up cattle. Of course, just like the buffalo did in the end, you would have to sacrifice at least one of the cattle.

It's good, but very long, and unfortunately a little too far to see anything properly. But the interaction of the herd was brilliant, till in the end, hungry, thirsty and needing to cool down, they had to sacrifice one of their number. It was obvious he wasn't up to running away with the others. Just maybe the bull pushing him over, on that final charge, wasn't as much an accident, but as an act of martyrdom. Lol Thanks!!

It's so mind boggling to watch the lack of common sense by buffalos when confronted by lions. All they need to do for survival is move in units, stick together, and never separate from the unit. The only thing the lions can do or try to do against a buffalo unit or herd is trick individual buffalos to seperate from the group.

You can do it for a bit less if you are frugal, or a huge amount more. I recommend checking out GAdventures. That is who we did out trip through, and it turned out great.

The cars keep on the roads, no off-roading, and the country needs the income from tourism. It spoils it alright but it helps pay the rent and the animals are used to it, the Crater is well-populated with wildlife and is more accessible than many other conservation areas.

Lions are not jackals they are just trying to survive, Unlike humans, we’re just there to watch and enjoy. The panoramic view was great, however with all those cameras, didn’t anybody have a zoom lens to zoom in to the action after the buffalo went down?

Very sad for the buffalo. He sacrificed and died alone for his herd. But I want to see they survive together.

AMAZING trip to Africa! You were so fortunate to have been able to witness this perfect cycle of life! The people criticizing you and this video must be vegetarians or vegans, because those of us who eat meat understand the lions. LoL! There are only about 25,000 lions left in the wild and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of buffalo. They NEED the lions to eliminate some, just to make sure they have enough to eat.

Did the other bull intentionally knock him down, or was it an accidental collision while trying to chase away the lions? betrayed by one of his own!

Why did you not focus in on the kill etc... very disappointing... left with a mystery... Why are the lions so complacent..

The fact that just at this site there is like 20 vehicles..wow..humans ruin the very last square inch of land...the poor animals trying to hunt with all the spectators cant help...it is sad! I know I wont contribute to it..I've forever wanted to go to Africa but not to add to this obvious encroachment on the wild life

You can't compare them and say one is better than the other, both tiger and lion are efficient predators/hunters in their respective habitats. They don't care about titles like "king of beasts" and all that crap - it's stupid people who bestow those titles upon these magnificent predators, and spend most of their time arguing about which one is better. And you obviously have no clue of an African buffalo's temperament or strength
