Obviously you got the idea that its the same girl at different ages. My personal head cannon is that its NOT that she made a magical wish as a little girl which changed her future. it's more that all the younger girl scenes are the older woman remembering her past but because of her mom and dads issues ALL she can seem to remember IS the bad memories. However its the EXTRA prefix Nate slips in before "..Living in my agony" that actually flips it into a positive song because he says "BUT, I can't keep on..." it's a conscious choice to see out the positive, the good in life including her past, to not ignore the bad but to recognize there WAS love in her house both from her mom and dad. That to me is why she drives out to her moms house in the middle of the night because she clearly distanced herself from her mom because she was so hurt and angry, but now she sees her mom as another flawed person with their own issues and struggles. To me that's a good depiction of the idea that I can NOT change the past but I can change the future

I literally ugly cried through this whole video the first time I saw it. That face killed me. Watching you react to it brought a few tears back as I saw that you understood and how it affected you. Powerful song about generational trauma. I got to sing this song with NF at his concert in Minneapolis in July. It was an awesome night.

I saw the ending as showing that there WERE good times with her mother, proving her mom really did love her despite her depression and substance abuse, but they were clouded by all the negative memories that are eating away at her. It's trying to say you need to change your perspective and forgive your parents who were just coping with the same traumas and mental health issues that you are now facing yourself. It's about acceptance and forgiveness. Stop living in misery by repeating the worst parts of your life over and over in your head. A big issue with children of addicts is having mixed emotions because there were plenty of good memories, but the bad was so bad and unexcusable that its hard to know how you should feel or if they should be allowed in your life. You cant forget the pain and trauma they caused you and its reflected in your actions now that you are an adult and navigating through the same struggles that caused them to turn to those behaviors. So hard to forgive, even when theyre sober now and youre no longer under their care. But until you do, its baggage that pulls you down and causes you to repeat the same mistakes because thats all you know and remember. Then the cycle continues.

When the little girl starts to smile it’s the illusion of her getting her wish when she blows out the candles. Thank you for your service and welcome to the NF family. I say start at the beginning because each album builds upon the one prior and they’re all phenomenal.

You are correct, sir. Little girl grows up with a neglectful, addicted mother. Then she becomes an addict as an adult, repeating the behavior that she has seen growing up. During the birthday scene, I believe she remembers how her mother was when she was sober. She goes back in the end to address her past.

The way I interpret the video, everything is from the little girls perspective. She only remembers the bad parts of her mother, which is how she ends up repeating her moms life. That night we see adult her, is her lowest point, and she sees she is repeating her moms life. She comes to remember that her mother got out of that life, and was a better role model for the daughter. So she goes to her mom to seek guidance of what she needs to change to have the happy life her mother eventually gained.

Thanks for the awesome video, man! You’re correct in saying that this is a story of a mother and daughter. The daughter learned to drink, smoke, argue, and be irresponsible from her mother. She grows up in those issues, and that becomes her life. Eventually she gets to that breaking point of seeing her mother in the mirror, realizing that she has become the exact thing that caused rejection in her younger years. Of course, at the end she drives to see her mother while remembering her mothers good side, and the times they shared smiling. If you want a sad NF song: Mansion is a perfect one. I would also recommend paralyzed, let you down, running, or lost in the moment. If you want an NF banger: When I Grow Up, The Search, Leave Me Alone, and Outcast, are all great options! Thanks again, stay safe!

When I first heard this song. I hated it because I felt off didn’t know what it was, and I’m an NF fan since his Moments album. Got my brother’s feedback and he told me with teary eyes this is what he thinks of me. Because I’m a serious guy. But he said every since I got back from combat I gotten more serious and he says this is me in a way. The instrumentals sounds positive, but lyrics were dark. He said I talk and have a great time I smile in the outside, but it doesn’t seem that way in the inside. But verse 2 and chorus hits me the most. I enjoy this song now and get teary eyed because truthfully I don’t know how to be happy. But know I got to be strong for my two little girls.

Check out "Story" next. NF is an artist of unusual caliber, and I think it's important to early on recognize the range of talents he explores. His psychological depth is obvious. But like you saw here with "Happy", it's how he tells it to you that matters, and "Story" puts his mastery of structure front and center. Also, it's just cool as shit.

Yes, the early years of life create a path that you have to deal with the rest of your life. It's up to you on how you deal with what you have to overcome. When you are betrayed by people that are supposed to love you the most It's a pain that goes to your core. Kudos to the little girl actress. She's amazing. Great song and brilliant video. You're a good father because you recognize the fact that they need you. No person or parent is going to be perfect but the fact that you continue to work on yourself says it all. You want to them to have all the love they deserve and to show them how much you love them. They know that as well.

I have 2 daughters and I’ve gotten into it with my wife with them around. I’m not proud of it, it’s not something that we mean to do, but if they’re gonna see it then they need to see ALL of it. Not just the fight, but the coming together afterwards. The apologies if needed, the listening, the talking it out, and the resolution. My wife and I have the rule in our house we never go to bed without saying I love you. We can be angry, we don’t even have to necessarily like each other in that moment, but we’ll always love each other. Love isn’t clean, it isn’t easy. Love is work, love is sacrifice, but the payout is bigger than any lottery your brain could ever imagine

I really try to live out this bible verse whenever I am angry and before I say something I regret. This verse helps. Jame 3:8-11 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
